Dear George,
I am writing to you for some help about a matter relating to Linde - perhaps you could turn my letter over to somebody else.
Our son, Dr. Linus Pauling, Jr., lives in Honolulu. He is a psychiatrist. He likes to make jewelry, as an avocation - not for sale, but entirely for his own use. He has got considerable mastery of the technique.
Now he is planning to make a pair of wedding rings, for his wife, and he wants to do the whole job himself. He would like to obtain some Linde blue star sapphire stock, from which he could make about one hundred cabochons, each about two millimeters in diameter. I judge that he would like to have a rod about three millimeters in diameter, long enough for one hundred cabochons to be made. I would estimate that he would need something like thirty centimeter length for this purpose.
He apparently has not been able to get this stock commercially, and has appealed to me for help.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling: jh
P.S. I still do a little work on metals and alloys. We have one research man working on this job, with support of a small contract from the Office of Naval Research. I am giving two talks on this subject in England this summer.
