10 June 1960
Dear Peter,
Mommie and I were happy to receive your letter. We are glad that the map reached you safely, and that Thomas likes it.
Linus and Anita and the children are due to arrive here this afternoon, and to stay two nights with us. We are looking forward to seeing them. Also, we are looking forward to seeing you and Julia and the children after we arrive in London 15 July. Our schedule now calls for us to leave for Prague on 27 July, then to go to Budapest on 3 August, to Geneva on 10 August, and to Cambridge on 14 August. Then we leave for Moscow on 20 August, and return on 16 September.
It seems to me that I heard from you last summer that you were considering writing a book for Freeman and John Bailey on chemistry for schools. I think that you shouldn't do it unless you are eager. I am sure that there is as much need for a good hook in physics as in chemistry. I don't think that it was a good idea on my part to get interested in writing a high school textbook in chemistry. I suppose that I have an itch to fill each financial niche - like the species of animals that are supposed to fill each ecological niche. I have decided that I have a little neurosis resembling the one that affected W. C. Fields. He had had such a hard time in his youth that after he got old and rich he still had trouble to keep from worrying about money. I have decided that the bad three months that I had just after my seventeenth birthday, when I was doing pretty hard physical work but not getting enough to eat because of lack of money still bothers me to some extent. Of course, Mama and I had some trouble during the first couple of years after we were married, but nothing quite so bad as this earlier three months for me.
Two copies of a chemistry textbook by Hiller and Herber have been sent to me by the publisher. I am sending one copy on to you, not because I think it is good, but because I think you might be amused to see how many mistakes authors can make. The drawings are especially bad, especially the tetrahedra.
Have I told you that I am working on a theory of general anesthesia? It involves the formation of hydrate crystals in the brain. Dr. Catchpool is just beginning a series of experiments on the effect of anesthetic agents in changing the brain waves of an artificial brain, made out of gelatin. I don't know whether anything will come of this or not. I like the whole theory of anesthesia, but it is hard to think of good experiments to carry out in connection with it.
Mama and I are thinking of buying some cattle for the ranch. We are not going to be able to get our allotment of grazing rights in the National Forest unless we own our own cattle. We are hoping now that the Forest Ranger at Salmon Creek, Ralph Haskin, will serve as our ranch manager.
Mama and I are going to go to Boston, Dartmouth (Hanover, New Hampshire), and Washington, D.C. next week. We are making the trip primarily so that Mama can attend the national meeting of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. I am going to give three or four talks for the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy.
We are eager to see little Sarah, as well as all the rest of you.
love from
[Linus Pauling]
