Dear Dr. Wiswesser:
I am grateful to you for pointing out the error on page 599, which I hadn't noticed and which had not been pointed out to me by anybody else.
You have my permission to take a structure index of the examples in my third edition.
In answer to your question about triple bonds formed by boron, I must say that I do not know about any example. If the boron atom did not have an unshared electron pair (which would give it a strong negative charge), it should use all of its S orbitals in forming bond orbitals. Three bond orbitals would lie in a plane, and they could hardly participate satisfactorily in the formation of a triple bond, because the amount of bending would be so great as to cause great strain energy. Accordingly I think that a boron atom without an unshared pair or an attached group would not form a triple bond. On the other hand, a boron atom with a methyl group attached might form a triple bond.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling: lh
