4 February 1960
Professor Dr. Karl Bechert, Gau-Algesheim Kirchstrasse 22
GERMANY
Dear Karl,
I am happy to have received your letter. It would have been fine if Ava Helen and I could have seen you last year; however, we were only in Germany eight days, and during this period we visited nine cities, and presented a lecture in each one. We have also been to Equatorial Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and some other countries since our visit to Germany.
I am surely interested to learn about the development of your non-linear field theory. I do not understand how gravitation could hold a uniformly charged electrical particle together, but I must say that I have grown far away from theoretical physics during recent years. I am, you know, working on the chemical basis of mental disease, and right now on a new theory of anesthesia and narcosis.
With best wishes for the New Year, I am
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by Professor Pauling Signed in his absence:jh

10 February
Dear Mama and Daddy:
Enclosed is a brief account of events as they transpired here on the morning of 31 January. I have asked Lucy's brother Michael, who heard the radio broadcasts, and her parents, who I think heard the broadcasts, to send along to you a brief resume of what they heard.
I have found the following misprints in Nature of the Chemical Bond:
Table 6-2: a bonds missing in cyclopentadiene structure
Figs 5-6 and 7-9 upsidedown
Fig VII-1 has free-hand 0, which was to be type-set, I think. All in all I think the book looks very nice.
What is happening next summer? We had thought of taking a short vacation, perhaps in August or September, but now I am thinking along rather different lines. Dr. Roman is going to be in Europe from mid-April to mid-July, at the Carlsberg labs, and Dr. Stadler is taking a months vacation in June. So I am considering spending a month or so, probably June, at CIT with Matt Meselson, to get experience with his techniques, and point of view. Things will be sort of quiet here during June, so that would be a good time to go away. I have been assured that my training grant would apply for this sort of thing, but I guess that I would have to supply my own travel funds. Well, anyway, I haven't written Matt as yet (I just got this idea yesterday). One question is whether or not we might be able to spend a month or six weeks at home. If you have some arrangement with people to stay in the house we would not want to interfere, but if we were to go south we would very much appreciate staying at home. All of this is in the conjecture stage at present, but you might let me know what you think about this scheme. Dr. Roman has given his blessing to this scheme; I am writing a tentative letter to Matt, and you might let me know that you think.
We had the mid-term in Biochemistry on Monday; I got 92, which was the highest grade in the class. Next quarter I am going to take only two courses (physical chemistry and biochemistry of nucleic acids), and thus will start research.
Since genetics is a new department, just split off from botany, we have a bunch of labs. All of these rooms have been completely renovated, with new lab desks, etc. We graduate students have a room, about the size of room 312 Church, with our own telephone, etc., just for the four of us.
Cheryl regards her self in the third person: "Cherry Blossom".
Love from,
Crellin and Lucy and Cherry Blossom and Little Kristin

11 February 1960
Dear Mamma and Daddy,
Thank you very much for your letter and for the birthday present. I have been worried about you. I can appreciate the hell the night was for both of you. I hope you recover. A long rest is required.
Esmiralda Ermitrude (BGP) was born 8:45 AM Friday, 5 February 1960. 8 lbs., 12 oz after 3 hours 15 minutes labour. She looks rather like Thomas. After getting her head out and without waiting for any more, she started to yell. Fortunately, when she got a hand out she stuck it in her mouth to suck. Julia is fine. Nice rest. So is EE. Thomas and I have colds. We are making do.
Joy Bernal made me a cake. It is good. We did not have a party though. Just candles to blow with the kids.
love from
Peter

12 February 1960
Dear Children: - Crellin and Lucy:
I am writing to tell you what happened to me on Saturday 30 January. I have been rather upset during the days since then, so that only now have I felt that I could settle down to writing to you.
On Wednesday 27 January Mama and I drove to Asilomar. We stopped in King City at the ranger station to see Alex Campbell, but found that, because of a misunderstanding about our visit, he was away. He had suggested that we have a talk about the possibility of making a trade of some of our land for some of the Los Padres National Forest land. I left word that we would be at the ranch on Saturday and Sunday, in case that he were to come to see us.
The meeting at Asilomar was a meeting of the Western Spectroscopy Association. I gave a talk on aging and death at the banquet Thursday night, and a talk on theory of the hydrogen bond Friday morning. Then on Friday afternoon Mama and I drove to the ranch.
Saturday morning we planned to have a lunch on the beach. We also discussed the possibility that Alex Campbell would come in, probably a little before noon, as he had done a couple of months ago. I told Mama that I wanted to check some of the lines representing the bounds of the ranch, and I started off, somewhere between half past nine and ten. I said that I probably would try following a contour, but I realized that I had not told Mama exactly where I was going and I was not sure that she had seen me start off toward Salmon Cone. It turned out that she thought that I had gone up above the road, or perhaps toward Soda Spring Creek.
I walked over to China Camp and up the slope to the first ledge. I was interested to discover that this ledge is covered with a shell mound - I judge that the Indians lived here for a long period. Then I climbed up to the second ledge, elevation about a hundred feet - the horizontal pile of big rocks, on which there is a small monument of rocks.
I continued walking toward the east, along the south side of Salmon Cone. I stayed at a level approximately one hundred feet above the beach. I had tried a couple of years ago to get to the mouth of Salmon Creek by following along the beach, and I found that there is a place where the waves beat against the cliff, so that it is not possible to get around the bluff to the mouth of Salmon Creek except perhaps at extremely low tide. I had in mind a possibility that water from Salmon Creek might be brought over to China Camp at about the hundred-foot level, without having to be pumped up to three hundred or four hundred feet to get it over Salmon Cone.
After clambering across some rather big rocks I came to the place where there is a cliff about three hundred feet high rising rather steeply from the beach toward the top of Salmon Cone. I followed a deer trail for a couple of hundred feet. When the deer trail came to an end I saw what looked to be a continuation some twenty or thirty feet higher up, and I scrambled up to it, traversing some loose rock on the way. In this way I got onto a little ledge. I saw that it would be impossible to continue east from this point, because there is a very steep cliff in that direction, without much vegetation. When I looked back, I was unable to see a way of getting back safely. I was afraid to retrace my steps, because I felt that it would be dangerous to go down the slope up which I had scrambled. The loose rock seemed to me to be especially dangerous. I thought about going back and continuing upward, but it seemed to me that I was apt to be stranded in a worse place than the ledge that I was on and it turned out that I was not able to make the effort.
The ledge that I was on was about three feet wide and five or six feet long. There was a rock face behind me, and the ledge was made by a big rock below. There was some loose material on the ledge, dirt and small rock, causing it to slope down. I sat on this ledge for a couple of hours, thinking that Mama would miss me and would probably come along the beach looking for me, and that she could then get the ranger to help get me off the ledge. After a couple of hours I discovered that I could stick my walking stick, which was about four feet long, into the dirt and rock beneath me, and I felt safer when I had done this and held onto it. I then had the idea of making a seat for myself, by digging away some of the dirt and loose rock. Later in the afternoon, when I thought that there was the possibility that I might have to stay there all night, I began digging out the dirt and loose rock to a depth of about a foot, making a little hole, about two feet wide and three feet long. I piled the dirt and loose rock up around the edge of the hole, so that the rim was about eighteen inches above the bottom of the hole.
At about four o'clock I decided that it was necessary for me to leave and to get home, because I was sure that Mama would be very upset by my absence. I was sufficiently frightened so that it was difficult for me to stand up on the ledge, but I succeeded in standing up and taking the first step off the ledge, to a place where a rock about twelve inches in diameter was stuck. The next step would have been on some loose material, and the third step onto a place where the material on the face of the cliff was compacted by a growing bush. I found that it was impossible for me to take the second step, onto the loose material. I judge that I had been frightened by the realization that I had got myself into a place that was not very safe, and that for this reason I was immobilized. About every fifteen minutes, from then on until dark, I stood up and attempted to leave the ledge; but each time I found that I was unable to do so, and when it began to get dark I decided that I would have to stay on the ledge overnight.
The dirt in the bottom of the hole that I had dug was somewhat damp, and I pulled up several bushes that were growing near the ledge. I stopped pulling up bushes when I pulled on one that I could just reach, directly above me, and dislodged a large rock, about a foot in largest diameter, which then caught in the bush and remained there from then on. I broke up some of the bushes into twigs, to make a sort of mattress underneath me, and kept two or three to put over me. They turned out to be unsatisfactory, however, because they were in the main bare of leaves, and later in the night I broke them up and put them under me. During the night parts of the bushes got inside my clothes, and I pulled out some handfuls of twigs.
I decided that I should stay awake all night, I was afraid that if I went to sleep and then wakened suddenly I might fall off the ledge. Also, I decided that I should keep moving, in order to keep warm. From that time on I kept moving one arm or one leg all of the time. It was not a very cold night, and I did not get really chilled.
I lay on my back or one side in this little hole, at first with a couple of bushes over me. Then I unfolded my map of the Burro Mountain quadrangle, about twenty-four by twenty-seven inches, and placed it over me. It seemed to help considerably in keeping me warm.
Time went by very slowly. I put in much of my time watching the motion of the stars during a period of about five hours when the stars were visible. It was cloudy or foggy from sundown until about ten P.M. and from 3 A.M. until perhaps noon the next day.
In the meantime Mama had not got worried until late afternoon. At about 5:30 P.M. she went to the ranger station and telephoned Barclay. The Ranger made a tour around Salmon Cone at about 7 P.M. He was perhaps a hundred fifty feet above me. I saw his light and could hear his shout, but he did not hear my shouts. I did not have matches with me, nor any tool except my Swiss knife. I had slacks, a cotton shirt, and a light corduroy jacket on, also my corduroy cap.
At 11:30 P.M. Lieutenant E.R. Thornburn, Deputy Sheriff from Monterey, came. He said that nothing should be done until the next morning. There were some men whom the ranger had got who were looking about, but they stopped at that time. Barclay came at 2:30 A.M., and immediately looked along the cliff toward Soda Spring Creek. Then he slept from 4 to 6 A.M., and then looked along the beach toward Soda Spring Creek, and later went to the upper ranch. I did not see or hear any of the dozen men looking about until 9:45, when a young man named Terry Currence came along the beach below me. When I called to him he scrambled up to the ledge, and called to the deputy sheriff, who was coming around Salmon Cone at a level perhaps fifty feet higher than the ledge. He came over to the ledge, and sent Mr. Currence on up the cliff, to take word to Mama that I was all right. He also said to have some ropes brought over. Then, after a few minutes, he said that he thought that we should try to get out without the aid of ropes, because the cliff continues for perhaps a hundred fifty feet above the ledge. I was skeptical, but agreed to try. We moved toward the west and up the face of the cliff, following a course that I would have been afraid to tackle alone. This brought us out near the top of Salmon Cone, and we then cut across toward the cabin.
I found that Mama was very much upset by her long wait, and the uncertainty as to what had happened to me. We stayed at the cabin that day, and then drove back to Pasadena on Monday. I thought that I was in good shape, and on Tuesday I went to the laboratory, with the intention of giving my lecture on the nature of the chemical bond. I found, however, that I was unable to talk to my secretary when I arrived, and unable to give the lecture. I went home, and stayed in bed for several days. I apparently was suffering from slight shock, the after effect of my fright on the cliff. I also began to suffer from a very severe case of poison-oak dermatitis, which is still bad, two weeks after the episode.
I made several mistakes. One of them was to have rushed forward in an over-exuberant and light-hearted way, across a somewhat dangerous stretch of cliff, onto a ledge, without having considered the question of how to get back from the ledge. A second was that I did not tall Mama exactly what I was planning to do. I do not think that my staying on the ledge overnight was a mistake, because it seems to have been beyond my decision; I had got frightened enough so that I was unable to leave the ledge. I am very sorry that I caused you and Mama so much anguish and concern.
Much love from
Daddy
Congratulations on the biochem. exam.

15 February
Dear Mama and Daddy,
Yesterday we had a few inches of wet, wet snow, but it was enough to amuse Cheryl. Unfortunately she didn't get out into it, as it was pretty slushy, but she marveled [sic] at the sight. It was gone by evening.
I am taxing genetics this semester; it is really a pleasure to take a course from MTM Rizki again. He is a marvelous instructer [sic] - he manages to inject enough humor in his lectures to keep everyone interested, and the hour is over in no time. Freshman physics is such a bore that I don't spend enough time with it, or haven't as yet. However my thesis is coming along quite well.
When I was up at Univ of Washington the man at Reed that everyone asked about was Rizki. I haven't heard definitely from Motulsky et-al, but I certainly got the impression at the interview that they were interested in me. The more I consider it the nicer that situation looks to me, especially in view of the PHS money.
Unfortunately Consumers Report doesn't have the circulation of This Week Magazine, as the CU article on fallout in milk looks quite cogent to me after a brief skimming, and certainly is better than Teller's falsehoods in that article in This Week. I'm glad to see that some people have some sense - I heard or read that the Great Lakes Maritime people won't allow atomic - powered ore carriers until the dangers of such ships are further studied.
Last summer I must have left at home a bunch of little waxed-type paper envelopes to hold negatives - I think that there were 100 envelopes, and that some of them had negatives in them. I thought that they were here, but I haven't been able to find them since we arrived here in September, and I would like them. If you have seen them, do you think that you might send them to me. I want the envelopes to put new negatives in, primarily. They are roughly 2-1/2 inches wide by 10 inches long.
Lucy is pleased with the mixer, although I think that she would like the book that goes with it if you still have it. Cheryl just looks darling in that dirnol.
Love from,
Crellin, Lucy, Cheryl, Kristin

Subject: Measurement of Heat Capacity
I think that it would be worth while to make some measurements of the heat capacity of brain, both anesthetized and unanesthetized, and also of some model systems.
I think that the unconsciousness that sets in when the brain is cooled to about 27°C results from the formation of microcrystals in the brain, which interfere with the conduction of the electric oscillations responsible for consciousness. These microcrystals are, I think, probably largely water, including also, however, some protein side chains and solute molecules. I think of the microcrystals as being similar in structure to the gas hydrate crystals with cubic units of structure either 12 A or 17 A on edge, or the hydrates formed by tetrabutyl ammonium salts.
The formation of these microcrystals on cooling should be accompanied with the evolution of heat, and their destruction on warming with the absorption of heat. Accordingly the formation of these microcrystals or their melting should contribute to the heat capacity of the brain.
I think that in the presence of an anesthetic agent, such as chloroform, the temperature at which the microcrystals form is raised to 37°C and that accordingly the evolution of heat on cooling or absorption of heat on warming should occur at a somewhat higher temperature.
A comparison of the heat capacity curves of a sample of brain tissue without anesthetic agent and another sample of brain tissue with anesthetic agent might provide evidence about this hypothesis. I would expect that the heat capacity curve for anesthetized brain tissue would lie below that for unanesthetized brain tissue in the 27°C region and above it in the 37°C region.
In order to check this point, we need to have a heat capacity apparatus. I suggest that the apparatus be of the simple Dewar flask sort, designed to hold perhaps ten or twenty grams of brain tissue. A thermopile can be used to measure the temperature, and the thermopile readings can be recorded on a chart by use of a Varian Associates strip chart recorder, a Leeds and Northrup Speedomax, a Brown recorder, or some similar instrument. There are several of these recorders in the laboratory.
It may be worth while to set up two preparations, in separate Dewar flasks, one of unanesthetized brain tissue and one of anesthetized brain tissue, with a differential thermocouple, which would record the difference in temperatures of the two specimens.
In each case energy can be introduced into the cooled specimen at a steady rate, by an electric heater.
I think that it will be worth while to use the same apparatus to study model systems of various sorts. A concentrated protein solution or even a coagulum of denatured protein might have its heat capacity determined in the absence of and the presence of an anesthetic agent. Similarly, the melting points of hydrate crystals of anesthetic agents could be determined as a function of the activity of the anesthetic agent. There is some material in the literature, but I think that much more needs to be gathered.
I think that the change in state accompanying anesthesia involves perhaps only one tenth of one percent of the material in the brain. You might calculate from the heat of fusion of ice how big an effect on the heat capacity would be if one tenth of one percent of the weight of the brain were to change its state over a temperature of about two degrees centigrade, and design the apparatus to have a sensitivity such as to detect this effect.

Dear Crellie,
I found the research book 732 at home and the report number 3 and I have now asked Professor Corey if he would prepare the work on the preparation of these halo-genides for publication. I enclose a copy of a letter that I have sent to Herbert Harned. Corey wants to have a paper on these complexes published at about the same time as the paper on the x-ray work, so that reference to it can be made.
I do not know what the situation is about the bromide. I judge that Professor Corey is not sure that niobium bromide had been prepared, and unless you have got some additional evidence it may not be possible to say very much about it.
Please let me know if you are agreeable to having Professor Corey go ahead with the preparation of the paper, which would have you and Professor Harned and Professor Corey as joint authors.
Much love from

18 February, 1960
Dear Daddy:
I am perfectly amenable to your suggestion that Prof. Corey prepare a paper on the synthesis of complex halides of Tantalum and Niobium.
I have no furthur [sic] evidence that the bromide compound we prepared actually is Nb6Br12•Br2•7H2O. In order to say anything about the bromide the preparation would have to be analyzed. I suspect that publication of the paper you propose would not preclude one on the bromide, were its composition to be determined definitely.
Love
Crellin

22 February 1960
Mrs. Richard E. Braach
McHenry Valley Road
Almond, New York
Dear Mrs. Braach:
I am grateful to you for writing to me. I can assure you that I know the Bible quite well. I do not believe, however, that I have an immortal soul, as you have suggested in your letter. I think that if there is anything of value about me, it is my actions, here on this earth. With the support and encouragement of my wife, I am attempting to decrease the amount of suffering in the world. One way in which I am working is illustrated by my book No More War!, described on the accompanying sheet. You probably can get a copy of the book from your local library. Perhaps reading it would help you to get started out on the great spiritual adventure, that of working to benefit humanity and to prevent war.
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by Professor Pauling. Signed in his absence:jh

29 February 1960
Dear Crellie,
I have told Dr. Corey that it is all right to go ahead with preparing the paper. Professor Harned also agreed.
Dr. Corey told me that he did not have a sample of the niobium bromide. If you do not have one, I suppose that it would be necessary to carry out the preparation again, and then to have the product analyzed. Possibly you would think it worth the while to do this sometime.
I caught a cold in St. Louis a couple of days ago. I had a speech to give also before the Rotary Club in Chicago, and I gave it and then took the plane home, and stayed in bed for a day and a half. Mama and I have since then had a few days at the ranch.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
