4 February 1960
Professor Dr. Karl Bechert, Gau-Algesheim Kirchstrasse 22
GERMANY
Dear Karl,
I am happy to have received your letter. It would have been fine if Ava Helen and I could have seen you last year; however, we were only in Germany eight days, and during this period we visited nine cities, and presented a lecture in each one. We have also been to Equatorial Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and some other countries since our visit to Germany.
I am surely interested to learn about the development of your non-linear field theory. I do not understand how gravitation could hold a uniformly charged electrical particle together, but I must say that I have grown far away from theoretical physics during recent years. I am, you know, working on the chemical basis of mental disease, and right now on a new theory of anesthesia and narcosis.
With best wishes for the New Year, I am
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by Professor Pauling Signed in his absence:jh
