10 February
Dear Mama and Daddy:
Enclosed is a brief account of events as they transpired here on the morning of 31 January. I have asked Lucy's brother Michael, who heard the radio broadcasts, and her parents, who I think heard the broadcasts, to send along to you a brief resume of what they heard.
I have found the following misprints in Nature of the Chemical Bond:
Table 6-2: a bonds missing in cyclopentadiene structure
Figs 5-6 and 7-9 upsidedown
Fig VII-1 has free-hand 0, which was to be type-set, I think. All in all I think the book looks very nice.
What is happening next summer? We had thought of taking a short vacation, perhaps in August or September, but now I am thinking along rather different lines. Dr. Roman is going to be in Europe from mid-April to mid-July, at the Carlsberg labs, and Dr. Stadler is taking a months vacation in June. So I am considering spending a month or so, probably June, at CIT with Matt Meselson, to get experience with his techniques, and point of view. Things will be sort of quiet here during June, so that would be a good time to go away. I have been assured that my training grant would apply for this sort of thing, but I guess that I would have to supply my own travel funds. Well, anyway, I haven't written Matt as yet (I just got this idea yesterday). One question is whether or not we might be able to spend a month or six weeks at home. If you have some arrangement with people to stay in the house we would not want to interfere, but if we were to go south we would very much appreciate staying at home. All of this is in the conjecture stage at present, but you might let me know what you think about this scheme. Dr. Roman has given his blessing to this scheme; I am writing a tentative letter to Matt, and you might let me know that you think.
We had the mid-term in Biochemistry on Monday; I got 92, which was the highest grade in the class. Next quarter I am going to take only two courses (physical chemistry and biochemistry of nucleic acids), and thus will start research.
Since genetics is a new department, just split off from botany, we have a bunch of labs. All of these rooms have been completely renovated, with new lab desks, etc. We graduate students have a room, about the size of room 312 Church, with our own telephone, etc., just for the four of us.
Cheryl regards her self in the third person: "Cherry Blossom".
Love from,
Crellin and Lucy and Cherry Blossom and Little Kristin
