Dear Mama and Daddy:
Thanks so much for everything - the Christmas holiday, sending the packages, forwarding the mail, etc. All in all we had a very pleasant Christmas. The packages contained mostly Christmas presents; perhaps some of it was not important, but I think that we should make use of our belongings. After all, we will probably live here at least four years. Thanks again for sending the things on, I can think of a few things, not very important, that we forgot. 1: A record of Bach, The Well Tempered Clavier, the first five pieces, played by Wanda Landowska. 2: my dark glasses are in the left door of the Porsche, in the pocket. 3: that lovely brown jug. I can't think of anything else. These things aren't important, although the dark glasses would be useful, come summertime. If you do come up here, you might bring them.
I am happy to hear that you got a change [sic] to go to the Ranch. If you got stuck in the mud it must have rained a good deal, which means it must be lovely. It's too bad you got stuck, but that gave you an excuse for a little extra time there.
I have a pre-doctoral training grant, tax-exempt, USPHS. It pays $ 175 a month plus tuition, and a little extra in the summer; I think twice the monthly stipend. Also in July I have been assured that there will be a little raise, probably to about $ 200 a month. I got the first check today. However, we have worked out a budget that, without a lot of extravagant living, comes to about $ 100 a month over that. I had thought that I would ask both you and Lucy's father if you would supplement our income, at the rate of $ 50 per month each. I think that the cost of living is very high here; I have heard that this is the third highest city in the nation. I feel that our estimate of $ 275 a month is realistic; it allows us to eat a balanced diet, with adequate milk, etc., but not an extravagant diet. If you want we can send you our budget itemized. Lucy's father indicated that he would be willing to send us a little each month, although I haven't written to him about it yet. I plan to do so tonight.
Matt Meselson is here, and gave an excellent seminar this afternoon. I talked with him a little, and I guess that I'll see him tomorrow. Seattle greeted him in its typical manner - pouring rain! Roman just told me today that he has invited AH Sturdivant to spend next fall here, perhaps give a course, and be around to talk with students. I suggested perhaps a history of genetics course; he would be perfect for that sort of thing.
This quarter I am continuing Biochemistry, taking genetics of microorganisms lab, and starting physical chemistry. The P chem course here strikes me as unusual; they start out with quantum mechanics, and solving in a quasi rigorous manner the Schrodinger equation. I confess that I am not sure that I fully understand the mathematics involved, but it makes the periodic system really clear to me. Next quarter I will continue p chem, and take a 2 unit course in nucleic acids. That's all the course work, and I'll be able to start research.
We would be delighted to see you, although I am afraid that we cannot offer to put you up. I do hope that you get a chance to come up here. United is starting jet service on Seattle-LA flights March 1.
Love from,
Crellin
