- Letter from LP to Arthur Goss, RE: LP points out that Goss was at a press conference after the Appeal had been written, approved, and issued. Mr. Young was present at the press conference as well and made a statement in which he criticized the appeal. LP believes that Goss is mistaken when he says that a press conference was never called when in fact there are photographs of Goss attending the press conference. LP objects to being criticized in Goss' letter when it is Goss who has "made the error and not me [LP]" LP hopes that Goss will continue his efforts in the cause of peace and will strive to be careful in the future. Dear Monsieur Léonis:
I am pleased to learn that you are trying to work out a research position for Dr. A. G. Schnek in the Free University of Brussels, and I am glad to tell you my opinion of Dr. Schnek and the work that he did while he was here.
We were pleased to have Dr. Schnek in the laboratories of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the California Institute of Technology during the past year. Dr. Schnek showed himself to be an able and well trained investigator in the field of biochemistry, including especially protein chemistry. He was very well liked by the other workers in our laboratory - I think that I may say that he has an excellent personality. Also, he worked hard and effectively, and accomplished a great deal. Most of his work was carried out in collaboration with Dr. Walter A. Schroeder, Dr. R. T. Jones, and Dr. G. Matsuda.
A principal part of the work done by Dr. Schnek was the careful investigation of the use of ion exchange columns of IRC-50 for the fractionation of human hemoglobin, in order that abnormal human hemoglobins might be separated from one another and from normal hemoglobin and also that the minor components that are ordinarily present in samples of hemoglobin might be isolated in sufficient quantity for characterization. Dr. Schnek then applied this technique and also the technique of starch-block electrophoresis in the fractionation of hemoglobin solutions and isolation of some of the seven minor components that are detectable in the contents of normal red blood cells of human beings. All of this work was carried out by Dr. Schnek in a thoroughly satisfactory way.
If you would like to have more information, please let me know. I am glad to recommend Dr. Schnek for appointment.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling: jh

Mr. Bronston's attention was caught by LP's letter to the New York Times on September 13, 1959. Bronston would like to get legislation passed in New York and needs expert medical testimony. Schindler is asking LP if he can refer Schindler and Bronston to a medical journal and any other sources LP thinks would be helpful.
