Mr. Alois Stoff
Heidhauser Strasse 89
Essen-Werden, GERMANY
Dear Mr. Stoff:
I have been interested to receive your letter, and my wife and I thank you for writing to us and sending New Year's greetings to us.
In answer to your question about the statements that you say have been made by Dr. Teller, that an absolutely clean atomic bomb can be made for use on the battlefield, such that the radioactivity diminishes in a very short time to a harmless amount, I must say that I have not heard anything at all about these statements. I have been reading the New York Times and other American newspapers regularly, and also some of the news magazines. No articles of this sort have come to my attention. I do not understand why such a report should be disseminated in Germany, and I suggest that you send me immediately some copies of the published statements, in order that I may prepare a rebuttal.
I must say that I think that it is impossible that an absolutely clean atomic bomb be made. I think that any atomic bomb or hydrogen bomb, no matter what the ratio may be of fusion to fission, would produce radioactive materials, such as carbon-14 as well as fission products, that would do great damage to the human race and to individual human beings.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling: jh
