Dear Crellin and Lucy,
Many thanks for your two letters. I apologise for not answering. I have been trying to get something done. I am pleased you are settled well in Seattle. I still do not understand exactly what it is you are studying and perhaps you would explain.
We are moving in three or four weeks. Our rent has gone up and we are tired of the place. Chiefly the rent has gone up.
Your proposed study of methemeglobinemia sounds good to me. I think that in fact it is an Ingram fingerprint. I think this technique of peptide digestion and combined chromatography and electrophoresis was first used by a fellow named Vernon Ingram.
I do want to sell the Merc, though the plans that I had for buying a house have now fallen through, and I am not in desperate need. When I last wrote you I was smack in the middle of negotiating a house and my expected source of money suddenly disappeared. Consequently there was a short period of panic. Now, however, that house has gone and I do not feel capable of buying one just now. Still, I could use a little of the money.
Mamma wrote and asked if I wanted to sell. Evidently someone has asked her. I am fairly sure my friend Art Locanthi would arrange the sale to a friend of his, and I think you should inform him of your intentions to sell and for what.
I have to give a rag lecture Friday week. I think it will be difficult. There is a lot of work involved in the preparation of the demonstrations. I do not know really what to say. There is a fine looking Hungarian girl in our first year crowd this year. A definite decorative addition. Female chemists seem in general to be indifferent to good looking.
We are moving I think to 62 Elgin Crescent, London W. 11. We should go in three weeks I hope.
I would like to have that Porsche too. I am afraid it is not really mine any longer, though I refuse to give up moral right to it.
The boy is fine. He goes to school and has a good time. We all began the winter long colds early. He coughs a good deal. Julia's sinus' are badly infected. I read in the Times that 60 people per 100,000 die annually in this country from perpetually infected bronchae, compared to 1.8 per 100,000 in the U.S. Most of it is due to coal smoke and sulphuric acid. I think I shall get the hell out of here.
Love from

Dear Parents,
Many thanks for your letter from Ithaca. I hear from my friends who read the newspapers that you are in Australia.
How about sending me that relief map of Europe please? The air freight rates are about $3 a kilo. Minimum of about $10, SAS LAX to LON. It is printed matter and there is no duty.
Yes please I want to sell the Merc. How much is he offering? Our price is $3000 and we might take $2500. Crellin has things more or less under control.
We are moving in about three weeks. Our new address— I do not remember what it is. I shall write and let you know.
Things are going quite well. We are all rather sick with the usual cold and upper infection. The boy is better. Julia's sinus' are badly infected. They will not give antibiotic for some reason involving waiting until the baby is born and see if it is needed. The boy enjoys his school very much. He will move to another school.
It is cheaper and perhaps not so good, but we hope he will get into a very good school in the new district soon.
Matt Meselson is on the TV tonight. He did not come see us. I saw Jeffries Wyman the other day in Cambridge and we had a long chat. I like him.
Much love from P

11 December 1959
Dear Mama and Daddy:
I'm terribly sorry that I wasn't here when you telephoned, and mad at myself for forgetting that you were going to call. I had run across the street to get some little boxes from Cousin George, Uncle George's son, and he offered me a beer.
I'm also sorry that you have had more projector trouble, but I claim innocence. I cannot remember using your projector during the summer; remember that Lucy's parents gave me one as a graduation present, so we used that. I am sure, however, that I didn't swipe the bulb. One probably ought to buy a spare, and keep it around for just such emergencies.
We had another little exam in bacteriology; I received 93% the highest grade in the class. The range was 40% to 93% I cannot conceive of any reason why anyone would get on it.
I have begun to discuss research ideas with Dr Motulsky. The department prefers that the idea for the problem should come from the student; I agree. Dr Motulsky seems to feel that the problem should not be an obvious one, that is, I should choose something to work on that it is probable that no one else will do. I will discuss my ideas when we see you.
We will come next Thursday, 17 December, on United Air Lines flight 552. It is scheduled to arrive at the Inglewood airport at 10:26 PM.
A new post-doctoral fellow in Genetics has just arrived from England. He seems to be on the ball, and is certainly a nice fellow. He is Scottish, but has been at University College, London.
Our sewing machine is getting a rash of use, preparing Xmas gifts. We are personalizing more pillow slips; and Lucy has made a couple of baby garments, for Sabrina, and for her brother's new baby.
Well, finals next week, so this weekend will be busy. Also, my good friend from Reed, Steve Piker, is here at UW, and tomorrow is his geburtstag, so we are having a little get-together. Fortunately a couple of other friends from Reed are providing the whiskey; all we provide is the living room.

Norman Thomas: Dinner to celebrate his 75th year. Los Angeles. 12 December 1959
Year after year, decade after decade, Norman Thomas has illuminated the world with his penetrating discussions and analyses of the great world problems. His analyses have corresponded to what is now called research - the open-minded and honest study of all of the facts, and the use of them in reaching unbiased conclusions.
And he has, in large part, won the fight. His platform is now the platform of the Democratic Party, of the Republican party; and in England of the Conservative Party as well as the Labor Party.
The victory has been greater in England, in Sweden, and in some other countries than in the United States or the USSR. We live in a world in which there is still mass misery, in which private power monopolies are still able to limit the utilization of the water resources of some parts of the world to that fraction that provides the maximum profit, thus blocking the development that would be of the greatest value to the nation, in which the cigarette companies are permitted to spend on falsely advertising their product a sum, 500 million dollars per year, as great as that devoted to medical research - even though this product produces a greater decrease in life-expectancy of Americans than any other cause.
We must all take up the fight carried on so vigorously by Norman Thomas!
[End note annotation by LP] 1931 - N. Thomas pointed out that Wall Street Bankers made $120,000,000 on foreign loans that lost the American people $2,000,000,000.
It is especially with respect to the fight for peace that we are indebted to Norman Thomas. Time after time he has pointed out the truth about war and militarism - and now the time has come when, we hope, the world has begun to listen to him.
Let me quote from him - 1931.
"All the logic is on the side of disarmament - and I mean disarmament, not a cut of 25% or 50% in the military budget. Armaments, armies, navies, universal conscription of young men - these are only phases of the insanity of a world in which the highest loyalty is to absolute national states. We have competitive armaments because we have no internationalism, no true family of nations.
"We have not even grasped the elementary fact that we must get along with Russia.
"Today the primary duty of each nation is first to cast out the beam from its own eye. Even if complete international agreement fails at Geneva, even if France holds out for arms, America can well afford an example in disarmament with which other nations would associate themselves.
"The success of Geneva will be a good beginning. It will not be the end. The community of nations must be achieved....Disarmament is the beginning in the winning of plenty and of peace and freedom."
And I believe that it will turn out that Norman Thomas will win this fight.
Norman Thomas, I am happy that I am a member of the human race of which you are so noble a representative, and I am proud to be here tonight, with you, at this celebration.

15 December 1959
Sir Lawrence Bragg, F.R.S.
Davy Faraday Research Laboratory
The Royal Institution
21, Albemarle Street
London, W.l, ENGLAND
Dear Bragg:
I have been pleased to consider the matter raised in your letter of 9 December.
With respect to Perutz and Kendrew, I must say that it seems to me that the nomination for a Nobel Prize is premature. The work is assuming greater and greater significance, but the most significant papers have not yet been published. Even after their publication, some time will have to go by before their evaluation has been achieved. I look forward with great interest to the publication of the papers that are mentioned in your summary of their work.
The work of Watson and Crick is in a different category, and I would be willing to write a supporting letter for their nomination for a Nobel Prize. It seems to me, however, that their work constitutes a contribution in the field of biology, rather than of chemistry, and I think that it would be appropriate for a Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine to be awarded to them, rather than a Nobel Prize in chemistry.
With respect to x-ray diffraction and chemistry, I have a proposal to make to you, and I should be glad to have your opinion about it. I should like to nominate Dorothy Hodgkin and J. M. Bijvoet for a Nobel Prize in chemistry, to be divided between them. The award would be for their use of x-ray diffraction in the solution of chemical problems, the determination of the structure of penicillin and cobalamine, in the case of Dorothy Hodgkin, and the determination of the correct absolute configurations of asymmetric molecules, in the case of Bijvoet. Would you support this nomination?
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh

Mr. Peter Pauling

Muswell Hill, London, H.10, ENGLAND
Dear Peter,
I enclose a cheek for $250, as a Christmas present to you. Mama is hoping to get a box off to you, but I am afraid that she will not be able to get it done before Christmas, so that that part of your Christmas present will arrive late. You know that it is just a week since we got back from Australia and New Zealand.
We had a fine time in Australia and New Zealand, but we were kept very busy. Mama was the hit of the Congress. She gave about twenty lectures in Melbourne and other cities in Australia, and also in New Zealand. In Sydney, for example, there was a big public meeting, attended by about 2,000 people. Mama was the principal speaker, although J. B. Priestley and Jacquetta Hawkes were also on the program.
We stopped for four days in Honolulu. We didn't do much of anything during these four days, but we did make a trip around the island.
Crellin and Lucy and their two little girls arrived about midnight last night. They will stay here during the holidays. Also, Mrs. Nishiwaki and her two little children arrived a few days ago. They and Professor Nishiwaki are staying with us for a few weeks. Professor Nishiwaki is doing some work on the abnormal hemoglobins.
Mama and I are hoping to go the ranch for a few days, between Christmas and New Year's Day, but I am not sure that we shall be able to do it. We are going to have some trouble getting there during the next few months, because I am starting the course on the nature of the chemical bond in January, using the third edition of the book, which is due to be available at that time.
Last night I went to a dinner given by Stanley Kramer, the producer of the movie "On the Beach", and then to the premiere of the movie, in Grauman's Chinese Theater. Mama was too tired to go. She and I had seen the movie twice before, in private showings. It is a very good film. Noel Baker was present last night—he had been flown in from London, and he is returning to London today. He made some good statements about the film at the press conference after the showing.
I don't remember whether or not I sent you copies of the paper on the structure of water in the volume about the Ljubljana meeting on hydrogen bonds. Hence I am sending three copies under separate cover. I wish that it were possible for us to get some more work done on this problem. I am too busy now to work on it, but perhaps in a few months we could finish the job and get something published.
Much love to you and Julia and Thomas, from
[Linus Pauling]
P.S. Would you send me a statement of your expenses for me, covering Penguins and other items, so that I could reimburse you before 1 January.

21 December 1959
Professor Arne Engström
Institutionen för Medicinsk Fysik
Karolinska Institutet
Stockholm 60, SWEDEN
Dear Professor Engström:
I am very sorry that I did not succeed in getting to you my opinion of the thesis "Macromolecular Organization of Epidermal Keratin" by Dr. Gunnar Swanbeck before 12 December.
I have read this thesis with much interest. It seems to me to represent an excellent investigation. I have no criticisms to make of it, and I am glad to congratulate Dr. Swanbeck on his successful prosecution of this interesting research.
I have an electron micrograph of a bacterial flagellum, made some years ago by Professor Robley Williams of the University of California. This flagellum clearly has the form of a three-strand helix. Each of these strands has diameter about 90 Å and the diameter of the flagellum is about 160 Å. I have suggested in lectures, and possibly in a published paper, although I am not sure, that each strand is a seven-strand cable of seven-strand cables of alpha-helixes. It seems to me possible that the structure is the same as that of ichthyotic keratin found by Dr. Swanbeck to have diameter 160 Å. Moreover, a seven-strand cable of seven-strand cables of seven-strand cables of alpha helixes would have a diameter 250 Å, and might represent the structure of the protein fibril of the horny layer from normal skin. The protein fibril of the psoriatic scales, with diameter 70 to 100 Å seems to be a seven-strand cable of seven-strand cables of alpha helixes.
With best wishes to you for the New Year, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh

- Letter from LP to Linus Pauling, Jr. [Filed under LP Biographical: Box #5.038, Folder #38.2]
December 31, 1959
Dear Linus and Anita:
Dick Lippman's death was a great blow to us all, although we knew immediately after the operation that his chances of survival were small.
We have had a pleasant Christmas, except for the feeling of unhappiness because of Dick's illness. Crellin and Lucy and the two little girls have been with us, and also Professor and Mrs. Hishiwaki and their two little children. They are to leave on the tenth of January; which will be a relief for Mama. We had not expected that things would turn out in this way. The arrangement that we had made was that the Hishiwakis would stay in our house while we were in Australia and New Zealand, but the arrival of Hishiwaki's family was delayed because of visa (or, rather, passport) difficulties, which postponed the period of their stay.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
