(Note at the bottom in blue ink from Lavine to LP RE: (Keep up the good work. At least they know you're active and the rest will come. Lou") [Filed under LP Correspondence: (L: Correspondence, 1959), #231.5]

11 December 1959
Dear Mama and Daddy:
I'm terribly sorry that I wasn't here when you telephoned, and mad at myself for forgetting that you were going to call. I had run across the street to get some little boxes from Cousin George, Uncle George's son, and he offered me a beer.
I'm also sorry that you have had more projector trouble, but I claim innocence. I cannot remember using your projector during the summer; remember that Lucy's parents gave me one as a graduation present, so we used that. I am sure, however, that I didn't swipe the bulb. One probably ought to buy a spare, and keep it around for just such emergencies.
We had another little exam in bacteriology; I received 93% the highest grade in the class. The range was 40% to 93% I cannot conceive of any reason why anyone would get on it.
I have begun to discuss research ideas with Dr Motulsky. The department prefers that the idea for the problem should come from the student; I agree. Dr Motulsky seems to feel that the problem should not be an obvious one, that is, I should choose something to work on that it is probable that no one else will do. I will discuss my ideas when we see you.
We will come next Thursday, 17 December, on United Air Lines flight 552. It is scheduled to arrive at the Inglewood airport at 10:26 PM.
A new post-doctoral fellow in Genetics has just arrived from England. He seems to be on the ball, and is certainly a nice fellow. He is Scottish, but has been at University College, London.
Our sewing machine is getting a rash of use, preparing Xmas gifts. We are personalizing more pillow slips; and Lucy has made a couple of baby garments, for Sabrina, and for her brother's new baby.
Well, finals next week, so this weekend will be busy. Also, my good friend from Reed, Steve Piker, is here at UW, and tomorrow is his geburtstag, so we are having a little get-together. Fortunately a couple of other friends from Reed are providing the whiskey; all we provide is the living room.

Is not acting in a way to promote his candidacy, includes excerpts from a series of articles on Communism by the Cardinal that appeared in the Boston Advertiser and Boston Evening American, says Kennedy must make it clear that the Cardinal's remarks do not represent Catholic opinion, and says he must show his disbelief in such fanaticism and intolerance.
