Oslo, Norway
Dear Dr. Jahn:
I am pleased to tell you that my wife and I have now arrived safely at home, after ten weeks of travel in various countries.
It is hard for me to believe that we have done so many things during this period, and have had so many interesting experiences.
Our ten-day visit with Dr. Schweitzer in Lambarene was especially interesting. I had the privilege of spending several evenings with Dr. Schweitzer, and of talking with him in detail about the problem of preserving peace in the world, and also about various problems of ethics, morality, and philosophy. I feel that these discussions have given me considerable help in connection with the preparation of my Messenger Lectures, which are to be given at Cornell University during October. The Messenger Lectures are supposed to be on the evolution of civilization, and I plan to talk about this subject from the scientific point of view - perhaps I should say from the molecular point of view.
Dr. Schweitzer was pleased to receive the greetings from you which my wife and I gave him. You may have seen him, now that he has returned to Europe. I had never met him before, but the impression that I got was that he has aged somewhat during the last year or two. His voice has become rather weak, and he seems to tire easily.
Before going to Africa we spent a couple of weeks in England, attending some international scientific conferences. We also had some days in Germany. There I gave nine public lectures, in nine different cities. These lectures, which were given in German, were attended by between eight hundred and twelve hundred people apiece. Most of them were given under the title "Unsere Wahl: Atomtod oder Weltregierung." The lectures varied a bit from city to city, but I was careful to give exactly the same lecture in the free university in West Berlin and in the Humboldt University in East Berlin. I hope that these lectures are of some help in encouraging the Germans to resist remilitarization.
From Africa we went to Stockholm, in order to take part in the Triennial World Congress of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. My wife is a member of the United States National Board of this organization, and both she and I took part in the Stockholm meeting, which was held in the House of Parliament. I also gave a public address, with the title "Our Choice: Nuclear Death or World Law," in the Blue Room of the City Hall in Stockholm, and I had the opportunity to talk with Prime Minister Erlander and with the Foreign Minister of Sweden. I hope that Sweden will decide not to manufacture atomic weapons.
The Fifth World Congress Against A and H Bombs, held in Hiroshima during the early part of August, seemed to me to be a great success. The Japanese government, which had given a subsidy to the first four World Conferences Against A and H Bombs, refused to make a grant to the Fifth Conference. This action is without doubt connected with the present negotiations between the Japanese government and the United States government to modify the United States - Japan Security Pact in such a way as to permit the remilitarization of Japan. There is very strong popular opposition to this modification in Japan, and this opposition found expression in many of the speeches given by Japanese participants in the Fifth World Conference. However, the Conference was pretty successfully kept at work on the problem of formulating a statement about the general world situation. The principal action of the Fifth World Conference was to prepare and approve this statement, which is called The Hiroshima Appeal. I enclose a copy of this Appeal, which seems to me to be a good document.
I am sure that conferences of this sort do a valuable service, in aiding in the presentation of information about the present world situation to the people of the world. My wife and I have decided that we shall accept the invitation of the Australian and New Zealand Congress for International Cooperation and Disarmament to take part in their meeting in Melbourne, Australia, from 5 to 14 November.
I am pleased that my book "No More War!" has now been published in Japanese and Italian translations, and that several other translations are being prepared.
My wife joins me in sending best regards to you, and in expressing the hope that your efforts to obtain international control of the whaling industry are meeting with success.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

5 September 1959
Dear Peter,
I enclose a reprint of my speech on the Structure of Water given in Ljubljana.
A few weeks ago, I think it was when we were in Japan, I began thinking about the radial distribution curve that you have calculated, and wondering whether the oxygen-hydrogen terms had been included. I think that it would be well worth while for you to check up on this point. Perhaps these oxygen-hydrogen terms would make enough change in the distribution function to permit a somewhat different interpretation of the calculations to be made than we had thought possible.
The principal peaks are at about 3.2 and 3.75 . The first of these might possibly be important enough to explain the shift of the first peak above 2.76, and the second may also be significant.
Mama and I are setting off tomorrow for the ranch, where we shall stay about three days, and then drive to Oregon for a few days, in order that I may give talks in Ashland, Portland, and Salem on science in the modern world, as part of the Centennial celebration of statehood. Then we shall stop for a few days again in the ranch, and be home about 22 September.
Crellin is going to go to the University of Washington. I think that the department that he will be in is called the Department of Medical Genetics.
Much love from
Dictated by Professor Pauling

I have known Professor P. P. Ewald since 1925, and have during much of this period been in moderately close contact with him.
Ewald knows the history of structural crystallography better than any other man now alive. It was during a discussion of his doctoral thesis with Laue that Laue had the idea of carrying out the original experiment on x-ray diffraction by a crystal. Ewald then developed the fundamental theory of x-ray diffraction, the so-called dynamic theory, simultaneously and independently with Darwin, who was working in England. The development of this theory is the most important contribution to science, in the way of research, that Ewald has made. However, his editorial work has been of very great importance.
Ewald has keen insight and excellent judgment. I am confident that his work on the history and development of structural crystallography will be a sound one.
Also, I think that it is fine that Ewald should be willing to devote a couple of years to this aspect of the history of science. It seems to me that science has become so important a part of the world, especially during recent decades, that a real effort should be made to develop the history of science, including contemporary science, in a thoroughgoing way.
I strongly urge that Ewald be granted a fellowship of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

19 September, 1959
Dear Linus,
Many thanks for your letters and for the map. You could have kept the map in Geneva; I have left some things there in a box.
Things are quite a lot better. Julia and I have had a number of discussions; I think she genuinely just does not realise, very much, but if we communicate, that is I tell her what my view of things is then she tries pretty hard to fit in with what I want.
I have begun writing my thesis and doing the pictures. I have decided that 1959 looks better than 1960 and so must work hard for a bit. It is a little boring, but has to be done.
Would you please lend me 1100 dollars for a period not more than one year, to be found by me in the next year from the proceeds from the Merc. I wrote Crellin several weeks ago and have not had a reply, but have written again with more or less an ultimatum. If he cannot come through, I am fairly sure I can sell it myself through my friend Bart Locanthi, who has just passed through and has always made tentative enquiries for it. We wish to buy a little suburban house out in the sticks of east Finchley for £2900 and I cannot quite get hold of it all. I should appreciate your advising me fairly soon whether you are willing or not.
This man Locanthi is quite an interesting cuss. He is a consultant to Jim Lansing, and he thinks their new 2 1/2 or 3 inch metal cone tweeter is very good. He is sending me some details of it. He did not think a great deal of the Quad electrostatic I sent to him, not loud enough and not low enough. He thinks highly of the Shure mono arm that came out three years ago or so, with a damped vibrator to remove the resonance involved in the lateral inertia of the arm and the compliance of the needle suspension. He thinks probably their combined head and arm which has not come out yet (only a separate head) will be good. I worked over my GE head, cleaning and straightening and regluing and so on and it works pretty well. I fixed the bad hum, the smoothing capacitor in the 12 volt DC heater line had fallen out of its socket.
I shall also pay you back the $276 I owe you from 1956. This man Locanthis told us a number of hair raising stories about observing Air Force attempts at various records for the FAA. He flies as a hobby and seems to know the right people to get in on things. He is interested in some other things too which are quite fun.
This little house has a few disadvantages; it is out in the sticks (15 minutes on underground and 10 minute walk from the lab) but it has been modified to be quite a convenient family dwelling. The kitchen is 12 X 26 feet, partially glassed, which will be the real LIVING room, two interconnecting reception rooms and three bedrooms. Julia has found a school for the boy; it seems a good school. He starts Monday. At the moment he must go in the afternoon, they are full up, but we hope he will get in the mornings soon. It is about 15 minutes walk from this house. Both Julia and Thomas are in pretty good spirit.
I don't know what you told the parents but they sure are full of bright ideas.
Much love from
[Peter Pauling]

19 September, 1959
Dear Parents,
[...]
We are trying to buy a little house in East Finchley, about the same distance North, but about a mile west of Whitehall Lodge. It is a reasonable family house, the kitchen has been extended to 26 feet by 12 feet, to allow a sort of living room kitchen. The two sitting rooms are connected by a double door, and there are three bedrooms, bath and W.C. It is a ten minute walk from the station and about 15 minutes from Thomas' school. I don't think it is ideal by any means, but it will do for a while.
I think Thomas' school is a good one, it is a private non profit nursery school. When Julia first went with him it was very hot and all the little kids were naked out playing in the sand pit and the paddling pool. He has to go in the afternoon now because they are full in the morning, but we hope there will be room in the morning soon. It is quite expensive.
Dr. Aaron Klug from Birkbeck will be in town later. He is working on viruses.
Much love from,
[Peter Pauling]

24 September 1959
Mrs. Robert R. Foresman
650 West Twelfth
Claremont, California
Dear Mrs. Foresman:
I enclose a copy of my letter to the New York Times, which, I think, answers your questions, in the main.
I think that it is likely that the drug store preparations of calcium compounds are free from strontium-90. This may not be true of calcium lactate.
I myself have been taking dicalcium phosphate—I think that it is the Parke-Davis preparation, 100 tablets for fifty-five cents. I have been taking the maximum amount recommended on the bottle, six tablets per day, which probably about doubles the calcium intake. We have found that our grandchildren like the large tablets of calcium glucomate with viosterol. These are just to be chewed up, preferably between meals. I have forgotten what brand.
As to the magnitude of the damage done by strontium-90, I may point out that it is probably about one thousandth of the damage done by cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking decreases life expectancy for Americans by about four years, on the average. If we consider half to be smokers and half nonsmokers, then the smokers have their life expectancy decreased by eight years, relative to nonsmokers. This is something that young people should know.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh

September 25, 1959
Dear Pete
I'm sorry to be so dilatory in writing - I was more or less waiting for your reaction to my letter from Geneva, and then I have rapidly become very immersed in work here. So it is that you and Pop have exchanged letters before I could get in.
[...]
About your loan, I am hesitant at this point to participate in something if I don't think it is a good idea. To help you in ordinary circumstances I am, of course, always willing to do. In this special case could you do two things to help me decide? First, tell me why you want to buy a house (this is not a facetious request - you can take up a separate letter for the answer) and two, ask Joy to look at it for me (and you) from the standpoint of suitability. I hesitate very much to ask you to involve her, since I know your feelings, but I think she does know something of the situation and is in a position to give advice.
We all really enjoyed the summer tremendously. I realize now that I was very tired at the beginning (therefore all the sleeping!) and needed the vacation. We were glad to have you with us in spite of all the distressing discussions, especially if some good comes out of it. We are certainly looking forward to next year, and another meeting. A lot of this letter (and my first one) sounds pretty negative; I must emphasize that we would all be tickled pink if everything works out with you and Julia - we all will be happy however it works, just so it does work. The biggest point of the discussion between Mom and me was that we all can accept whatever happens and that we will pitch in to help as necessary. If certain decisions by the parents (or me, for that matter) sound harsh, it is not because of anger but in a sincere attempt to help you get on your feet, domestically and vocationally, so that the future may be happier for you than the past has been.
Anita's due to pop any time now - she's been expecting it for the past week or so. I'll let you know when it finally happens.
Much love to you all, and I'll try to write more often.
[Linus Pauling, Jr.]
PS. The Porsche arrived day before yesterday, in good condition, except for the cigarette lighter and tire gauge stolen out of it.
Your friend Locanthi does sound interesting. Incidentally, I just got a Lansing speaker including one of the little tweeters. Sounds pretty good.
PPS. 9-28-59 Anita got a nice letter from Julia today - sounds like Julia is trying! Good for her.

28 September 1959
Dear Mom and Pop:
We certainly enjoyed our short stay in Pasadena, and we're all looking forward to coming again! That's one good reason for hanging on to the house for a while! Thank you very much for putting us up in spite of the inconvenience to you.
We're also looking forward to seeing you on your passage through Honolulu. Be sure to tell us in advance so we can come to see you if you're only here for a short airport stop. And if you'd like, we'd be tickled pink to have you stay over on one leg or another of your journey.
Anita's having some cramping--perhaps tonight's the night!
Much love,
Linus
