accident
type:
Would you type this and put it away in your files so that you can get it in case the fellow wants me as a witness - we'll have this record. May 27, 1959.
My wife and I have just seen an accident on the highway (I think its number is 138), the Foothill Blvd. crossing the Big Tujunga wash. We were coming south at a speed of about 50 miles an hour. There were 3 cars ahead of us, all with separations between adjacent cars of perhaps 50 to 100 ft. and all moving at the same speed. A pickup truck pulling a horse trailer was going north on the same highway. My wife said that she noted that the trailer began to sway. This pickup truck seemed to be going at about the same speed, 50 miles an hour. The trailer then broke loose and hurtled across the highway, toward the west. The first of the 3 cars ahead of us was struck in the right front by the trailer which then went over the bank and was broken up. The right front tire was blown out and the radiator and right front fender were badly damaged.
We stopped our car and looked over the situation and I gave my name to the man in the car which had been struck. He seemed to be in his 60’s, slender, with gray hair. The car was a green station wagon. The man probably was not hurt, but seemed to be shaken. He had put on his brakes. There were skid marks on the pavement for about 50 feet. His car had been pushed by the impact so that it was facing to the southwest, about a 45 degree turn. The men in the pickup were about 40 and 20 years old, respectively. My wife has made a note of the license numbers.
