3 March, 1959
Dear Daddy,
Thank you for your letter of the 20th which I was pleased to receive.
Bookcases: wood is much cheaper in California than here, and I think rather nicer than steel if you can get someone to make them. I am quite satisfied with my steel shelves. They are cheaper than wood, at least any ready-made wood. I think I shall get some 9" library shelves from the same company, which are more expensive than my 12" light industrial shelving but worth it in the added available space in the room. The same company make a system of hanging lateral filing, looped pockets of heavy manila that hang under a special shelf in 12" widths for quarto and 15" for foolscap. I think I might get some of the quarto to hold reprints and such. I shall not get anything more until we move though. The 12" shelves work out about $2.00 per three foot shelf.
We have been looking for a place to live. I found a house at the corner of Ladbroke Road and Ladbroke Grove, (we have been there) on three floors with a 50 foot garden facing west, the owner has now withdrawn it from the market. I do not know what that means. It was too expensive anyway.
I shall probably write to you sometime about money. If we were to buy a flat on long lease or a house, and I think that we shall have to buy, I can borrow at least half the purchase price from the mortgage people at 6%, pay back over 20 years. Then I must find the rest and something to fix the place up somewhere else. I do not want to borrow more than £3000, this being about the maximum my salary will pay off. The interest I pay, by the way, is a tax deductable expense which saves 1/3. The rates may go down. I do not think we can find anything less than £4000 or £4500 and perhaps £500 to fix it up, and of course we do find places that are more.
I am sorry that my birthday letter to you talked all the time about presents for me rather than presents for you. Perhaps sometime I can write you a letter and not discuss me.
I designed some shelves for Linus seven years ago that used rather thick wooden shelves and then galvanized iron water pipe with holes drilled through it to support the shelves. It of course was a nuisance to drill the holes, but cheaper than brass. I think standard pipe flange fittings were put into it too. You may feel it is too dangerous.
I hoped we might have a new place for you to come see us, and a new bed, but it is unlikely.
I am doing a lot of teaching. We have the third year boys in the lab and I have four experiments. I must give my five lectures next term. What was that electron deficient compound you were telling me about?
I have a new 1/16 inch lead wall in my room to protect the new Gregorio's. I feel better. Actually I have a rather bad cold and try to rest at home. I went home early yesterday and went to bed, but have been house hunting this morning.
I might suggest to you that when you have available the details of your visit to England, that I write to the Home Office that you are coming and what you will be doing and requesting they make a decision and instruct their officials accordingly. You may think it a loss of principle, but it is the way things are done here and it would prevent having to hang around the airport. I would write to them as a resident.
Much love from,
Peter

Brockway, Department of Chemistry, University of Michigan, to LP RE: Says he is sorry LP won't be able to stay with them in Ann Arbor, says they have arranged to have his lecture at 12 because too many people have classes at 11 or 1 or 2:00, and says they can have lunch at 1:00 and leave his afternoon free for other appointments. From: Linus Pauling
Subject: Von Neumann
John von Neumann in his book The Computer and the Brain discusses the natural nervous system. He says that the natural computer element, the neurone, has a rather slow reaction time, one one-hundredth of a second - that is, slow compared with modern artificial devices. He says or implies that the method of transmitting information by digital pulse trains, interpreted in terms of pulse-time density to give digital-type logical information but analog-type quantitative information, will reduce the effective computing speed by a factor of 10 for each effective decimal place of accuracy. On the other hand, he suggests that the effective memory capacity of the brain must be of the order of 1020 decimal digits, in order to record a lifetime of experienced sensations. Hence the brain, compared with modern machines, is a very reliable and compact computer, with a low speed and a low order of accuracy in individual calculations. It has an enormous (inactive) memory capacity, and a large (active) arithmetical-logical assembly (highly parallel operation), and great economy in power requirements.
Von Neumann's argument is that since the brain has to control such a highly complex organization as the human body, it must carry out long calculations. The brain cannot work to 10 or 12 decimal accuracy, which we know to be necessary in artificial computers to retain two or three figure final accuracy, and hence he argues that some different and unknown form of mathematics must be employed in the brain to produce its satisfactory results. He says that the loss of accuracy at each stage of a long calculation may possibly be eliminated by carrying out a large number of independent calculations at each stage and evaluating the results statistically. Because of its large active assembly the brain is equipped to do this. The second point, suggested by the reviewer in Nature (A. H. Armstrong, Nature 183, 350 (1959)), is that the brain never does any arithmetically deep calculations (that is, long calculations), but merely makes minor interpolations, variations, and extensions to a vast stock of "tabulated solutions," which it has been accumulating on a basis of trial and error and statistical selection, in its memory throughout the course of its development from a single cell. Really basic problems, such as digestion of food and circulation of the blood, have perhaps been tabulated prenatally for a reference in this way. (I would point out the ability of the chick to interpret impressions from its eyes.) Slightly less basic problems, such as learning to walk, have not been solved prior to birth, and it takes the infant's brain-computer many months to solve this problem. Even the adult's brain-computer may take a week to solve the rather simple problem of riding a bicycle. When obtained, this grid of experimental results is stored in the memory for future use by simple interpolation.
Much of the above material is quoted verbatim from the review in Nature.

Dear Mom:
We're still feeling pretty happy about having the whole family here at Christmas time. I think that it was a tremendous success, and something we ought to do every once in a while. I thought that it was a really memorable Christmas, one that will go down in history.
I am really sorry that I got delayed so much in getting to the airport and was unable to say "Auf Wiedersehen" to you. I am happy that I was able to wave to you through the window of the plane, at least. I'm glad that Linda and Barclay were able to have that week to roam about by themselves. Apparently they had a good time.
We also enjoyed having Julia and Thomas around, although I think that sometimes having people for really extended periods of time can get to be somewhat wearing. This is especially true if they are not active in finding their own activities. However, Anita went right on with her school and I went right on with my work and everything went along smoothly. We feel we got to know Julia a great deal better, in fact knew her for the first time really. We will no doubt be joining up with Peter and Julia next summer for a considerable time.
The children's easter vacation starts March 27. We have often thought that it would be a tremendous amount of fun for one of the children (I guess this year Liny) to come to visit you for that week. It would also do the children a lot of good in that they would be separated for a while. We have mentioned this possibility to Liny and he is tremendously enthusiastic if you would be able to take him on. I have no idea whether or not you will even be in town at that time, or whether you would feel up to having a little rapscallion like Liny around. However I think he's pretty well behaved and especially when not deleteriously influenced by his younger siblings. If you would be taking a trip up to the ranch during that week he would be doubly delighted. At any rate, let me know very frankly what you feel about this plan. If it works, of course, it means a succession of small children coming over as the years go by. This is good for the children, but I don't know how good it is for the grandparents!
Much love,
Linus

Two reprints describing the work accompany each of the two copies of the nomination. It is important to point out that the basic original idea behind each of these two papers came from Dr. Meselson.
I think that this work constitutes the most interesting work in the field of biology that was published in 1958. I think that Dr. Meselson is as able and promising a scientist of his age as I have ever seen.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh

Dr. Charles L. Nord, Director
Community Mental Health Services
Nassau County Mental Health Board
1565 Franklin Avenue
Mineola, New York
Dear Dr. Nord:
I have been interested to read your letter of 11 March, and to consider your question about biochemical and physiological differences in new-born children as compared with the adult population.
First, let me say that the biochemical differences reported between schizophrenic patients and other people are not very specific, and there is some question as to how significant they are.
Second, there are, of course, biochemical differences between new-born children and adults. One difference is the presence of fetal hemoglobin in the blood of new-born children. There may well be many other differences, but so far as I know they have not been subjected to thorough study.
One difficulty, of course, is that the methods for study of biochemical differences are difficult and in general laborious, and we have to expect that progress will be rather slow.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh

17 March 1959
Dear Peter:
Mommie and I were glad to have your letter.
She was rather sick for a few days, with a sort of flu. In fact, much to her disappointment, she was not able to give her talk about Russia to the Women for Legislative Action. I took her place, and said all of the things I could remember her having said.
I am glad to know that we should not post the map to you. I am keeping it in my office.
We have been up to the ranch for ten days. I got about two chapters of the book written. Also, I made a second bookcase. It is made of three birch shelves, eight inches wide and five feet long (made from stock an inch and a quarter thick). The uprights are brass rod, threaded the full length. It stands three feet high, and is at the south end of the room. I have taken up a set of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, 9th edition, to have there for reference, although it is rather out of date. For example, it gives the principal cities in California, with their population. Number 6 is Grass Valley, 8,000 population and number 7 is Los Angeles, 6,000 population.
Love from
[Linus Pauling]

22 March 1959
Dear Mom,
Linie is delighted at the prospect of his trip. We think it will be very good for him to get on his own.
At present he is reserved on PAA's day flight on Friday, but waitlisted on their Thursday night flight (which he prefers). He is reserved back on PAA's Saturday midnight flight. However, you can send him back any time that is convenient for you. He is excited over the plan for going to the ranch and San Francisco, and we don't think it will be too much for him. He won't have any trouble staying with strangers while you're busy. I'll send along some drugs for him in case of trouble, such as carsickness.
We'll send a cable when we know his definite arrival time.
Anita wasn't so busy over the Christmas holidays that she couldn't get pregnant! We've been planning on a fifth child for some time (the corner bedroom that you were in was designed as a nursery) and the time finally seemed ripe, so here it is! It (for lack of a better term) is due probably in October, like Ramona. Hopefully there will be other similarities to Ramona.
When and where are you going to be in June? We are planning on moving en masse to Geneva in the middle of June and staying as long as possible—the first? week in September, probably. Maybe you could visit us in Geneva if you are somewhere nearby. We are expecting visits from Pete and family and Linda and family as it is, and it ought to be a lot of fun.
Anita will be taking a very quick trip over there in April to make final arrangements for equipment, etc., for the house. We don't know yet whether she will be able to lay over in Los Angeles long enough to visit.
Many thanks for giving Linie this opportunity.
Much love,
[Linus]

24 March 1959
Monsieur J. Polonsky
8, rue Voisembert
Issy les Moulineaux
(Seine) FRANCE
Dear M. Polonsky:
I was pleased to receive your letter and the reprint of your paper on the functioning of living cells.
I myself have thought for many years that electromagnetic vibrations that interact with the molecules of a living organism play an important part in its functioning. I do not yet know about any evidence that tells us the scale of structure involved in this interaction. I have thought that it was probable that the structures were not of the size of amino acid residues or nucleotide residues, but were rather somewhat larger. However, I do not think that the proposal that you make can be ruled out, in a general way, at the present time.
I shall look forward to learning more about your work along these lines.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh
P.S. I note that you are to be in Los Angeles between 2 and 17 February 1960. I should be pleased if you would get in touch with me at that time.

MOLECULAR DISEASE, by Linus Pauling
Address to the American Orthopsychiatric Association, San Francisco, 29 March 1959
I like people. I like animals, too - whales and quails, dinosaurs and dodos; I am sorry that I shall never see a living dinosaur or dodo. I like trees; I hope that the giant redwoods will not all be cut down. I like microorganisms. I like crystals - minerals, such as calcite, rhodochrocite, pyrite, zunyite, lazulite. I do not like to think about the tons of beautiful crystals of galena, azurite, and malachite being mined and smelted to make the lead and copper used in unnecessarily great amounts in our expanding technological civilization.
I believe that Dr. Albert Schweitzer did not go far enough in formulating his principle of reverence for life. We need to have reverence for the whole world, both animate and inanimate.
But I like human beings especially, and I am unhappy that the pool of human germ plasm, which determines the nature of the human race, is deteriorating. The collection of molecules of deoxyribosenucleic acid that will make the next generation of human beings what is will be is not so good as that which determined our character; there are more bad molecules in the collection. The defective genes are now not being eliminated from the pool of human germ plasm so rapidly as in the past, because we have made medical progress and have developed feelings of compassion such as to make it possible for us to permit the individuals who carry the bad genes to have more progeny than in the past. Moreover, defective genes are being manufactured at a greater rate than in the past, because there are new mutagenic agents operating in the world of today.
A good example of a hereditary disease is chondrodystrophy, which causes dwarfism. The gene for chondrodystrophy is dominant. One child in 12,000 who is born suffers from this disease, as a result of his possession of a newly mutated gene. About 80 percent of them die in the first year after birth. It is likely that the incidence of chondrodystrophy is increasing, as a result of the action of the new mutagenic agents in the modern world.
I estimate that in 80 percent of the cases of mental disease there is a strong hereditary factor. There is, of course, also in many cases a significant environmental factor. The hereditary nature of a human being may sometimes be such that he can withstand great environmental stress, whereas for other human beings the hereditary character is such that even the minimum amount of environmental stress is enough to cause serious mental disease. About half the hospital beds in the United States are occupied by mental patients. About ten percent of the American people spend some time during their lives in a mental hospital. I believe that, as more is learned about the molecular basis of mental disease, it will be possible to decrease significantly its incidence.
Sickle-cell anemia was the first disease to be recognized as involving an abnormality of a molecule. A dozen years ago it was thought that all human beings manufacture the same kind of hemoglobin. Then it was discovered that the hemoglobin molecules in the red cells of patients with sickle-cell anemia are different from those in other human beings. The molecule of sickle-cell-anemia hemoglobin has an electric charge differing by two units from that of a molecule of normal adult human hemoglobin.
It was found that the parents of the patients with this disease manufacture both normal adult human hemoglobin and sickle-cell-anemia hemoglobin; molecules of the two kinds of hemoglobin are present in each red cell of these parents, in about equal amounts. The genetics of sickle-cell anemia is accordingly clear: there are two genes involved in the manufacture of hemoglobin; in normal human beings each of the genes is a gene for normal adult human hemoglobin, and manufactures this hemoglobin, whereas in the sickle-cell-anemia patient both genes are sickle-cell genes, which manufactures sickle-cell anemia hemoglobin, and in the heterozygotes there is a gene of each kind, and both kinds of hemoglobin are manufactured.
Since the discovery of sickle-cell anemia hemoglobin ten years ago about 20 different abnormal human hemoglobins have been discovered, associated with many different diseases, previously unrecognized as distinct clinical entities.
The gene abnormality responsible for the disease is evidently a minute one. The hemoglobin molecule consists of two identical parts, each containing about 300 amino-acid residues. It has been shown that all but one of the amino acids are the same in normal adult human hemoglobin and sickle-cell-anemia hemoglobin, and that the 300th, located somewhere in one of the polypeptide chains, is different: it is a residue of valine in sickle-cell-anemia hemoglobin, and of glutamic acid in normal adult human hemoglobin. It is likely that the gene that is involved in the manufacture of the hemoglobins is similarly altered by a small amount, one part in 300, in its mutation from the normal adult human hemoglobin gene to the sickle-cell-anemia hemoglobin gene.

It is likely that all of the diseases that result from inborn errors of metabolism can similarly be described as molecular diseases. For example, phenylketonuria results from the failure of the patient to manufacture an effective enzyme, in the liver, that catalyzes the oxidation of phenylalanine to tyrosine.
About two percent of viable children born have gross physical or mental defect because of their inheritance of defective genes. Many more suffer from minor hereditary defects, which in the long run may cause more human suffering than the major defects, because they are not removed so effectively from the pool of human germ plasm by the infertility of their hosts. The rate of manufacture of defective genes by mutation is increasing, as a result of the existence in the modern world of mutagenic agents, such as x-rays used in medicine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes and of the radioactivity of fallout from the testing of nuclear weapons. The geneticists of the National Academy of Sciences – National Research Council Committee that submitted its report in 1957 estimated that high-energy radiation causes about ten percent of all mutations. The exposure of the gonads of Americans to background radiation, from cosmic rays and natural radioactivity, amounts to about three roentgens during the first thirty years of life. Medical x-rays provide approximately the same exposure. The estimate that I have made of the exposure due to radioactive fallout, for nuclear explosions carried out at the average rate of the past few years, is about 0.3 roentgens in thirty years.
There is nothing that we can do about the damaging of the pool of human germ plasm by cosmic rays and natural radioactivity. It is, of course, possible by good medical practice to decrease somewhat the exposure of the gonads to medical x-rays, as by shielding the gonads whenever an exposure of some other part of the body is being made. Another effective way is through the use of x-ray films of increased sensitivity, and through the limitation of roentgenographic examination to cases when there is significant medical justification.
The damage done by radioactive fallout can be limited through the cessation of the tests of nuclear weapons. It is worth while to attempt to make an estimate of the number of human beings who might be kept sane by the act of stopping the testing of nuclear weapons.
The effects that we shall discuss are genetic effects that would appear in the population in the United States during the next few generations. I shall assume that the average population of the United States during the next few generations will be 200,000,000. Of this total, ten percent, 20,000,000, may be expected to spend some time during their lives in a mental hospital. I assume that there is a strong hereditary factor involved for eighty percent of them; that is, for 16,000,000. If the testing of nuclear weapons were to be continued at the recent annual rate for a period long enough to expose the germ plasm of the entire population to the fallout dose, an estimated number of mutations corresponding to an additional 160,000 cases of mental illness would be produced in the population of 200,000,000. The tests that have already been carried out can be similarly estimated to cause mutations that will result in serious mental disease in 23,000 people in the United States. I think that it can be a source of satisfaction to us that at the present time no nation is continuing its tests of nuclear weapons, and that the Geneva Conference on an International Agreement for the Cessation of Nuclear Explosions is continuing, and may soon lead to the formulation of an effective agreement.
I am astounded by the rapid progress that has been made during recent years in the understanding of the molecular structure of human beings. Ten years ago I would have said that the discovery of the structure of deoxyribosenucleic acid and the formulation of a reasonable molecular mechanism for its self-duplication would be something that our children or grandchildren might achieve, but not we ourselves; yet the Watson-Crick proposal seems to be satisfactory. The exploits of the nuclear physicists during the last few decades show how fast progress can occur, when the time is ripe. I believe that the next fifty years are going to be the golden years for biology and medicine. I believe that it will be possible to make great progress, during the next few decades, in the control of mental disease.
