  20 February 1959

  Dear Peter:

  Thank you for writing to Roger Stanton about the book cases. I looked over the metal book cases in the auxiliary library, and also some other metal shelving that we had at the instrument shop, and I have now decided to make the book case out of wood - I think that I shall try to get somebody to make them for me, to my specifications.

  Mommie and I spent ten days at the ranch early this month. I put in part of one day making some book cases for the ranch, and when we go back, week after next, I shall make another book case. The one that I made is rather nice looking. I got 7 pieces of birch, 5 ft. long. They were a full inch in thickness, made out of 1 1/4 inch stock. To support them I got 1/2 inch threaded brass rods, and a supply of nuts, to hold the shelves in the proper place. I bored holes in the 4 corners of the shelves, and put them together in this way. I am going to make a similar case, with 3 shelves, to go under the big windows on the south end of the house - the 7-shelf case is in the bedroom.

  Julia and Thomas are here now. We are having a good time with them.

  I have continued to work on the revision of The Nature of the Chemical Bond. I am supposed to have the job done by the first of April. Then I need to get to work on revising College Chemistry.

  On Saturday I had lunch with Willi Brandt, the mayor of West Berlin. He impressed me favorably. Also, Momma had lunch with Norman Cousins the same day, and I went out to the Cousins' ranch as soon as I got away from Willi Brandt.

  Dr. Schweizer has invited Mamma and me to come to visit him in Lambarene. I don't know yet whether we shall be able to accept the invitation. Our plans now are to come to London about 15 or 20 June, for the Ciba conference, and to stay around until about the first of August. We shall probably not stay in England very long, but visit some other countries.
