Mrs. Ruth Ann Tukey
1320 Westview
East Lansing, Michigan
Dear Mrs. Tukey:
I am pleased to have received your letter. It would have been fine to have seen you - my wife and I, with all of our descendents, were together in Honolulu over the holidays.
I shall look forward to talking with your son Harold Jr., when he drops into my office.
As to our work on chemistry and mental disease, I must say that we are concentrating on chemistry and mental deficiency - not because I am more interested in mentally deficient individuals than in the gifted ones, but because I think that they provide a problem that can be answered by chemical methods, in part, at least, more easily than the general problem of intelligence or the gifted person.
It is interesting to me that you should say that gifted girls of high school and college age have aspirations that are lower than their potentialities. Perhaps our society does not provide enough opportunity for them. In this respect, it is interesting that about 70 percent of medical students in the U. S. S. R. are women, and (I think) about 30 percent of engineering students. France, too, offers more opportunities for the gifted women than we do.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:JH
