Dear Peter:
Could you send me a copy of the book "The Human Sum. How Many Should We Be?" edited by C. H. Rolph, Heinemont, 18 shillings.
Linda is in fine shape. I judge that she will hold out -- perhaps, rather, hold in -- to the end, despite having twins, which usually come two or three weeks early.
Mamma and I are getting along well. On Monday I am to be in New York - not over night, returning in the afternoon. I am going to give a little talk to the book salesmen of Dodd, Mead and Company. Bobo says that this personal acquaintance with the author helps them greatly in selling the books to bookstores. Victor Gollancz is going to bring out the British edition.
I haven't got around to doing anything about water yet. Between now and Sunday Mama and I are to be at the ranch, where I shall work on the Nature of the Chemical Bond. The man that we had running the service station gave up, because of bad health, and now we have another man, who has leased it for one year. Hearst castle will be open to the public on 2 June. It will be interesting to see how much the traffic increases as a result.
I had quite a rough time on the TV program Meet the Press. Hundreds of people have written letters to me and to the National Broadcasting Company complaining about it. Many think (they have said privately to me) that it may have done more good than a straightforward discussion of the problem would have done, but I am doubtful. I was on for an hour with Oscar Levant a few days ago. This is a pretty relaxed program.
Our plans at present are to leave here for Europe approximately 25 August. We may stop in Brussels for a few days, and then come to London. Fifteen to 17 September is when the Kekule symposium takes place. My talk is on 15 September. Probably we shall leave 17 September for Kitzbuhel and Vienna, the third Pugwash Conference. Then on 22 September we shall return to London. I am to speak in Harringway Arena on 23 September, in a meeting arranged by the National Council for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons Tests. Then the next day, or perhaps the day after, we shall go to Essen, where I am to speak in a meeting arranged by Dr. Martin Niemöller and the War Resisters International. Probably we shall pop on to Los Angeles on Saturday 27 September.
We had a visitor here whom you may know - Dr. Nicoll of Cambridge. He came to dinner the other evening.
Much love from
Linus Pauling
