- Letter from LP to Dr. Otto Bastiansen, Norges Tekniske Hogskole, Institutt for Teoretisk Kjemi, Norway, RE: Has written a book called No More War! which will be published this summer. The book discusses the general nature of nuclear war and fallout, and it proposes that we must use man's power of reason, rather than war, to solve international problems. Proposes that world problems be solved by the application of research by a world peace research organization, in the same way that other problems are solved. LP and AHP are thinking of coming to Europe this summer and perhaps spending a few days in Norway. Describes his plans for the summer. Wonders if it would be worthwhile for him to speak in Oslo around August 25, somewhat along the lines of his talk there last year, but with more detailed discussion of the nature of nuclear war itself and proposals about peace research. Peter has accepted an appointment as Lecturer in Chemistry in University College, London. Linda, who was married last year, is expecting twins any day now. Professor E. W. Pfeiffer
University of North Dakota
School of Medicine
Grand Forks, N.D.
Dear Professor Pfeiffer:
In answer to your letter, I must say that I think that Dr. Kulp knows as much about strontium 90 as anybody.
The amounts of strontium 90 are conventionally referred to one gram of calcium. Consequently, for a given amount of strontium 90 in fallout, the amount per gram of calcium will be high if the calcium in the soil is low. I think that it is easily possible to check on the amount of calcium in the soil in your neighborhood; to see whether this is the explanation of the high ratios of strontium 90 to calcium.
I understand that even stratospheric fallout tends to be concentrated in the general latitude in which tests are made, and accordingly there might well be very considerable effect of Russian tests in fallout in South Dakota and North Dakota, as compared with the Nevada tests or the American tests in the Pacific.
I myself feel that the strontium 90 problem is a significant one, for the health of human beings now living.
Thank you for sending me the clippings.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:w
