  Dear Dr. Robins:

  As part of the studies of the structure of nucleic acids that Professor Corey and I are directing, we have been making X-ray diffraction analyses of crystals of simple derivatives of purines and pyrimidines closely related to adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. We are especially interested in determining the structures of derivatives in which a simple organic group, preferably a methyl group, is substituted at the position normally occupied by the ribose ring in naturally occurring polynucleotides.

  We have obtained a small quantity of 3-methylthymine and a determination of its structure is already in progress. I wrote recently to Dr. C. P. Rhoads at the Memorial Center for Cancer and Allied Diseases inquiring about possible sources of 9-methyladenine, 9-methylguanine, and 3-methylcytosine. Dr. George B. Brown of the Sloan-Kettering Institute sent us a small sample of 9-methyladenine which, I believe, will be adequate for our X-ray work. I also received a letter from Dr. C. Chester Stock of that Institute stating that you had supplied them with a specimen of 9-methylguanine and suggesting that you might have some of the material which you would be willing to spare us for our work.

  I am writing to ask if you do, indeed, have any 9-methylguanine on hand that you could spare, or if you could suggest a reliable source of this material. For the investigations that we have in mind we shall probably need about 1 gram, but even a smaller amount would be helpful.

  I hope that you are enjoying your flight and that your room in Bailey Hall turns out to be comfortable.

  I am lonesome already.

  I popped right back to the Freeway. It got crowded at about 20^th St, so I went off, got gasoline, drove along Hoover to near Sunset, & got on the Pasadena Freeway, & home at 8. Jack was asleep. I made coffee, bacon & eggs, & toast. At 9 I came to the lab. Mr. Chavez had not yet come.

  I've written a letter to Kenndy about bomb tests & about the Oslo Statement.

  Tomorrow afternoon I'll go to Fresno, & come back the next day. Thursday is Phil Sturgeon's party for the Itano's. Saturday my little sweetheart comes home.

  Dear Sir:

  In your weekend magazine for 5 April 1958 there is an article "Here Is What We Learned About Radioactive Fallout." It contains a serious error. There is a table with a column headed "Fallout Radiation in 50 years." The values in this table, for eight Canadian cities, range 0.9 to 2.3 milliroentgens. However, as mentioned in the text of the article, the correct value of the present level of fallout radiation is about one-tenth of a roentgen in thirty years, that is, about 170 milliroentgens in 50 years. Hence the values given in the table are about 100 times too small, and some of your readers may have been misled into thinking that fallout radiation is a far less serious problem than it actually is.   Dear Mamma,

  Thank you for a lovely box of goodies that has come: all sorts of fine cereals and some nice skirts, though I look sort of funny in them. We have the cereals every other day and I love them. On alternate days we have oats porridge so they will last longer. It is terrible that I only like cereals for breakfast. Thomas is just as bad.

  Thank you for the offer that you and Daddy made to supplement our income while we were here. It is really very generous of you and I know you could think of other ways to spend the money. I have not yet decided what to say in answer and shall think about it for a while. It seems to me unlikely that I should refuse point blank; I think we should be rather uncomfortable in many ways if we were not supplemented in some way.

  Thank you for sending on the magazine Audio which is missing and is probably around someplace.

  If it is possible, could you get me a subscription to Consumers Report, that is, get me a membership in the Consumer's Union? How expensive is it? It would not do me as much good as it would were I in America, but it is better than nothing and I am quite interested. Perhaps you could get them to send me the last Annual Guide too.

  I think that we should move from this flat, though we could afford it now. It is not really good enough for Thomas, who wants a garden to run in. Also we would like to have more room and be closer to town. It is very hard to find a place to live in London and expensive. We may have to buy a place. It is what most academics do, even for two or three years, since it is almost the only way to find a house or flat.

  I am sorry in many ways not to come home. I had wanted to come for a while just to be at home and in familiar places, but I suppose I can stick the big bad world.

  We all have colds and I have been in bed for four days. I think I shall get up tomorrow though I am not completely well. I have a great deal to do. We plan to go to Spain from the middle of June to the middle of July and stay in a little shack on the coast. I expect it to be very nice, though perhaps too hot for Julia.

  Very many thanks for keeping the household running, and Peter's temper sweet, with the lovely big parcel of cereals.

  I think I can proudly state that he has had breakfast every morning since, which is not the usual state of affairs. Otherwise, the only possibilities are, to have porridge one morning and no porridge the next by way of change.

  I love the skirts you sent with them too, and have worn one of them constantly ever since. Lightweight smart clothes are particularly hard to find in England (there is no summer, of course), and as I have no sewing machine I cannot even make a few simple things. So I very much appreciate all the nice things you have sent me, especially as they are just the things one cannot get here. In fact, it is banal but have to say that it is only for woolen, both, by the yard that England has much advantage. I think it is possibly true also that many of the very cheap clothes in England are of really very good quality for value, but of such dreadful design. It is the same with other things too. That is what makes one so cross about England, that for the same money one could have something really desirable, of simple elegance; and many English people prefer this now but are forced to have the old traditional. I am thinking of houses now, where it is not allowed in many places to build a modern house, which would 'spoil the neighbourhood.'

  But we have to put up with this shanty a little longer after all. I'm hoping it won't be breaking up Thomas's life at too crucial an age when we finally move. I couldn't do with him having any more problems of such a vital soul, he is a little devil enough just by nature. He is a big, bad lad now. This afternoon, in an old too-tight pair of trousers, thick soled shoes, long hair and coat, he looked a little teddy boy
