8 April 1958
The Editor, Montreal Star
Dear Sir:
In your weekend magazine for 5 April 1958 there is an article "Here Is What We Learned About Radioactive Fallout." It contains a serious error. There is a table with a column headed "Fallout Radiation in 50 years." The values in this table, for eight Canadian cities, range 0.9 to 2.3 milliroentgens. However, as mentioned in the text of the article, the correct value of the present level of fallout radiation is about one-tenth of a roentgen in thirty years, that is, about 170 milliroentgens in 50 years. Hence the values given in the table are about 100 times too small, and some of your readers may have been misled into thinking that fallout radiation is a far less serious problem than it actually is.
