Mrs. Irene Eastman

Grand Forks, N.D.
Dear Mrs. Eastman:
In answer to your letter, about the fluorescence on beef kidneys that you have noticed, I have to say that I am not at all sure that I can tell you what the explanation is. However, I think that it is likely that the fluorescence is the result of some normal biological phenomenon, probably a little bacterial surface growth.
Sincerely yours,

5 March 1958
Dr. W. F. Libby
Atomic Energy Commission
Washington 25 D.C.
Dear Bill:
I am writing a book on nuclear weapons and war; I hope to turn the manuscript over to the publisher before the end of the month. I have been stimulated to publish the book by the refusal of LIFE Magazine to publish an article by me in which the erroneous statements and misleading statements in the article by Drs. Teller and Latter would be discussed.
I hope that my book will not be open to any serious criticism, and I am striving to have the information given in it as reliable as possible.
I have difficulties of various sorts, and I am writing to you to ask if you would help me with one of them.
In the 23rd Semi-Annual Report of the Atomic Energy Commission, page 233, there is a table in which there are given "Preliminary estimates of radiation exposures in localities, estimated doses." Under the column "Cumulative for All Tests" which is described on page 281 as "Estimated Total Exposures Accumulated in the Localities Cited for All Nuclear Tests Held at the Neva Test Site, Including the Plumbbob Series," there is given the value 4.28 roentgens for Hurricane, Utah, population 1,375.
However, in the 14th Semi-Annual Report of the Atomic Energy Commission, it was stated that the 1500 Inhabitants of Hurricane, Utah, had received a 13-week dose of 5.0 roentgens, and it was also said that these amounts should be increased somewhat (about 50 percent) to take account of the deposited radioactivity that had not yet become effective.
Could you tell me the explanation of the apparent discrepancy?
Also, I should like to ask if you have information about the average annual incidence of leukemia and bone cancer in Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco for years other than 1947? I should think that the National Institutes of Health; Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, could have given you such figures as easily as the figures for 1947 and that they might well have done so. I should like to know how much variation there is from year to year. I would expect that the fluctuations from each of the six numbers that you quoted would be of the order of 1 or 2 cases per year per 100,000 population.
I have not made any very strong statements about you in my manuscript. One statement that I make is critical of your introduction of the Denver argument. In your New Hampshire lecture you said that the number of cases "is small so our data may not be too significant. However, these figures do point to a definite tangible evidence of a margin of safety." Also in your American Physical Society lecture you say "... We cannot say that this proves anything. It does, however, give us some assurance from normal experience that the effect of 8 S. U. will not cause a detectable increase in bone cancer or leukemia." I criticized these statements as misleading, because they suggest that the statistics have some validity about the question of somatic effects of small amounts of radiation, whereas in fact they have no validity. They do not provide any evidence whatever as to whether or not leukemia is caused by small amounts, of radiation in the amount estimated by Professor Lewis, or whether bone cancer is caused by small amounts of radiation in a similar amount. Teller and Latter, of course, presented your argument and made a false statement about what it proves.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:w

Dr. Linus Pauling
Department of Chemistry
California Institute of Technology
Pasadena 4, California
Dear Linus:
Harvey Itano and I have been collaborating recently on some further studies with normal and sickle hemoglobins, concerning their dissociation and association in acid solutions. We find that mixtures of A, S, and C hemoglobins, dissociated and then re-associated, form no electrophoretically distinct hybrids. We thought that you would be interested in these results and are enclosing a manuscript which we are about to submit to Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. [handwritten: "to WAS 2/31/58"]
Both Harvey and I are planning to attend the San Francisco A.C.S. meeting next month, and Ruth and I hope to spend a little time with her folks in Sierra Madre before the meeting. I will drop in then and visit.
We are all very excited by the density gradient sedimentation studies, which are certainly beautiful. Frank Stahl visited Yale a few weeks ago, and we had a stimulating time.
With best regards, and looking forward to seeing you
Sincerely,
S. J. Singer

17 March, 1958
Dear Daddy,
The water works are coming along well and I hope to have them finished by the end of the week.
I have accepted Professor Ingold's offer of a position on his staff. We shall have to do something about housing. We shall no longer be able to afford this flat, and it is really no longer suitable since Thomas is rapidly reaching that stage where he must be allowed to run about.
May I suggest that you offer a research fellowship for the coming academic year to Dr. David W. Green of the Davy Faraday Research Laboratory, The Royal Institution, 21, Albemarle St., London W. 1 ? He is Bragg's senior protein man now, a contemporary research of mine as Max Perutz's research student. He has been doing the work on Ox hemoglobin. I think he is fully competent, at proteins, at metal substitution, at crystallography, and is a whizz at making Fourier programs for electronic computers. He has crystallized the orthorhombic form of lysozyme and kept a postdoctoral man busy doing crystallographic work with it. He made me a program to do my cubic Patterson and will make me another in a few days to do the P2,3 Fourier. He may have accepted something with Alex Rich at MIT, which I think is a mistake. Consequently, if you need some people, I suggest you write him quickly.
Dr. Ian Bush, whom you have met in Pasadena, may write to you. He is a physiologist, biochemist and medical man with a position at Oxford. His wife does not wish to come to America. He has been offered a number of jobs, at UCLA, Rochester, etc. He wants to learn rigorous chemistry.
We are pleased that you are coming and look forward to seeing you. I must be in Glascow on August 29th. Are you going to Vienna?
Love from
Peter

March 18, 1958
Dr. Austin M. Brues
Director, Biological and Medical
Research Division
Argonne National Laboratory
Lemont, Illinois
Dear Dr. Brues:
I am writing a book in which, among other topics, I discuss the genetic and somatic effects of fallout.
I have been interested to read your short article "Somatic Effects of Radiation," in the January 1958 issue of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
I judge from reference number 17 of the following paper by W. F. Neuman, that you have a letter to Science in press. The date is given as 1957, but I do not remember having seen it and I am writing to ask if you could give me a copy of the letter, in case that it will be published soon.
There are several points in your short paper that are not documented--you give no references but I assume that they may be documented in the Science article.
One statement in your short paper interests me especially. It is that "Lewis' tentative hypothesis has met wide acclaim and acceptance as a proven fact by scientists with less familiarity with the subject. . . " Since I am interested in this field, I should like to ask you to give me references that support this statement by you.
I have not met any scientists who have accepted Lewis' hypothesis as a proved fact, nor have I seen any reliable published statement about such a scientist.
It is not necessary to check my own public statements or writings, because I have never stated that this hypothesis is a proved fact.
May I ask that you reply as soon as possible, because the manuscript of my book is supposed to be in the hands of the publisher by the end of this month.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
LP/am

Dear Pop:
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the three reels of your movie. I've enjoyed looking at them, and the children have been delighted to see Grandpapa in action again. They have been shown three or four times to other groups, primarily by my friend Joe Mottl to classes in the Adult Education Division of the Department of Public Instruction. Jack Naughton of The U.H. Chemistry Department saw them last summer on the mainland and wishes to use them this summer for courses he is giving. There are also tentative plans afoot to use them at a public Science Fair.
It seems apparent by this time, however, that these films are of the group having a poor sound track. The speech seems unintelligible in many places to those who are not well grounded in chemistry. I remember that you said there was a possibility of changing the less satisfactory reels for good ones. If this is possible I wish you would let me know and tell me how to go about doing it soon. It seems a shame to combine such an excellent optical performance with a poor audio performance.
We enjoyed the short contacts with Dick Lippman very much. He seemed to have had a good time here. He has stimulated some thinking and I have continued to describe his project to others who might be interested in working on it.
Everyone is well, the children are growing up and all send love.
Much love,
Linus

22 March, 1958
Dear Daddy ,
I regret I have not yet got the water calculations finished, but I am on the last lap. I shall send them off immediately they are done.
Could you please advise us a little of your summer itinerary? You will be here around the 15th of September. Are you going to the Biochemical do in Vienna at the beginning of September?
I must be in Glascow on August 29th which may turn out to be annoying. I should like to go to Vienna to keep my hand in biochemical state of the art.
If you have some idea, could you please advise when you will be here? I should like to be here at the same time. We shall try to go away for a holiday since we have not had one for a year and a half.
April, 1958
Thank you for your letter which I am pleased to receive and for your and Mamma's offer to help us. I shall wait for a while before deciding what to say,
I am afraid we are too late to get David Green. I think his negotiations with Alex Rich have progressed so far that he feels that he cannot break them. I should have thought faster.
Ian Bush has a Ph.D. in physiology or biochemistry. He got it before qualifying in medicine and I do not think he wants any more degrees. I think it unlikely he could come to Pasadena, and he probably should not leave Oxford. He has a number of offers in America, at Cornell, Salt Lake City and so forth, at more than $10,000 a year I think, and if he goes he should take one of these. He has just begun at Oxford, though, with his own lab and his wife does not wish at all to leave. He and his wife, nee Alison Pichard, visited you in the summer of 1953 I guess. She is the sister of Joy Jonckheere, who has just spent a few months with Anita in Honolulu.
I expect I should go to the Faraday Society meeting on Ions of the Transition Elements in Dublin from the 9th until 11th of September. We are trying to arrange a holiday in May or June, sitting in the sun in a shack. I think we shall Not get to Vienna.
I shall finish the water calculations on Tuesday, and shall send them off to you. Have the drawings been changed? I shall write, out my suggestions for them and send them, and my suggested changes to the paper. Some of the atoms have been left out of the drawings.
When are you coming to Europe? Perhaps we should all go lie in the sun, though. I suppose you are too busy. We want to go early in the summer when it is not too hot. You should try to rest here a little and not rush around too much.
Love from
Peter

Dr. George B. Brown
Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research

Dear Dr. Brown:
We thank you for the crystals of 9-methyladenine which you sent us. They arrived in good condition, and we were able to find one that could be used for X-ray photography without recrystallization. Those that were less satisfactory were dissolved in water and recrystallized, to give excellent crystals that are adequate for our purposes.
The 3-methylthymine that we have in mind is that described in Beilstein XXIV, page 355. If you have some of this substance to spare, we should indeed like to have it for our studies.
With many thanks for your helpful cooperation, I am
Sincerely yours,

25 March 1958
Mr. Norman Cousins
The Saturday Review
25 West 45th Street
New York, New York
Dear Mr. Cousins:
I am writing in part to express to you my personal appreciation for the many fine actions that you have been taking about the great world's problem that must be solved. In particular, I wish to tell you how much I have liked some of the editorials that you have written in The Saturday Review.
The editorial in the 15 March issue, entitled "Dr. Teller and the Spirit of Adventure," seemed to me to be less effective than others that you have written, and also less effective than the book review by Dr. John M. Fowler in the 22 March issue. I shall mention only one point about your editorial. You say that "A report for the AEC made public very recently revealed that radioactive strontium in the bones of American adults has increased thirty percent as the result of nuclear tests. The radioactive strontium in the bones of children has increased fifty percent, according to the same report." I do not know just what you are saying here. Perhaps you mean during one or two years these increases took place. Of course, no American adults and no American children had any radioactive strontium in their bones a few decades ago, so that the increase as the result of nuclear tests.
Also, later on there occurs the sentence "At the end of twenty-eight years, the radioactive strontium in the air still retains half its strength." This would be a satisfactory statement if the words "in the air" were left out. With these words, it is hard to know what the statement is supposed to mean.
I think that your discussion of radium dials of wrist watches is not very good. One should not call this radiation "the infinitesimal amount." Also, I doubt that the statement is true that the peril of radioactive fallout is less than that represented by the radiation from the radium dial of a wrist watch. The reference to opening the face of the watch and eating the radium seems to me to be of no significance, and it serves only to confuse the issue.
I should like to see your efforts as effective as possible, and I believe that they could be made still more effective if you were to receive good advice about scientific questions. I should, of course, be pleased to have you call upon me at any time.
If you would like me to do so, I could give you other examples of statements in your editorial that seem to me to be more or less unsatisfactory. Perhaps I should give you one more example now. You say "Every particle of radioactive strontium taken into the body is stored by the body..." This statement is not true. Most of the radioactive strontium taken into the body is excreted again, and only a fraction, usually a small fraction, is stored in the body. If Dr. Teller were to reply to your editorial, he could quite properly attack it on the grounds that you make untrue and exaggerated statements about fallout
I note that you repeat this untrue statement near the end of the article, saying "Every little bit that enters the body is stored..."
Let me repeat my offer to you to assist in any way that I can. I have had a great deal of experience in the various scientific fields that relate to this question - the biological and medical as well as the physical and chemical. I have read and thought a great deal about these matters, and I know what the pitfalls are. In all of my writings and public statements I have taken great care to avoid exaggeration and to avoid the use of untrue or misleading statements. I know, however, how easy it is to make a statement that turns out not to be quite correct.
There is a question that I should like to ask you. On 13 January 1958 I sent to you a news release that I had prepared about the petition by myself and 9235 scientists to the United Nations. This petition is mentioned in the 15 March issue. I have not seen all of the issues of The Saturday Review this year, but I do not remember having seen any earlier mention of the petition. I should be pleased if you could send me tear sheets of earlier mention of the petition in The Saturday Review. I am especially interested in this petition because it was almost entirely the result of my own effort. The job of gathering the signatures was done very largely by me, with the help of a few volunteers, and a secretary whom I employed for the purpose, on a part-time basis. Almost the entire cost of gathering the signatures was borne by me, and, in fact, the total cost was not very great.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling: LL

25 March 1958
Dear Peter:
I am happy to have your two letters, of 12 and 17 March.
It is fine that you have accepted the offer of a lectureship on Professor Ingold's staff, in chemistry, University College, London. I think that it is a good thing for you to have done. It will give you some teaching experience. I think too that you are right in saying that you will be in a strong position later on. Probably you could have got a teaching job in a college here without any trouble - Haverford College, for example, or Reed College. A number of such colleges have been looking for people. They probably would have required that you show up about 1 September, which may have caused you trouble.
I have been thinking over the matter of your flat, and I shall attach a postscript to this letter, if I think of something worthwhile to say.
I must check up on the conference. I have been in such a turmoil for the last couple of months that I don't know what has happened. I have accepted an invitation to come to London in September - 15 to 17, I think. I think that I received some other invitation, and I shall have Mrs. Wulf see if she can find it, and get me to answer it.
It will be fine to have the water structures published. Please tell me the reference about dipole-dipole and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions as being stronger than van der Waals effects.
I think that the situation in fact is that one must be careful in making such a statement, because what might be called dipole-dlpole and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions are in large part taken into considersation under the name hydrogen bond. One way of describing the dipole moment and quadrupole moment of the water molecule is by placing a small positive charge on each of the hydrogen atoms and a corresponding negative charge on the oxygen atoms. If this is done, one can calculate an electrostatic energy, which corresponds to the hydrogen-bond energy. It is best done by putting two negative charges at the other two tetrahedral positions around the oxygen nucleus, rather than the double negative charge at the oxygen nucleus. However, this is only a rough approximation to the hydrogen bond energy, because there is also a resonance effect with the long bond coming into some extent. Accordingly, if one discusses ice or water in terms of hydrogen bonds, one should not also discuss it in terms of dipole-dipole, etc. interactions.
It is easy enough to do the calculations (the summations converge very rapidly), but I do not think that it is worth while to do so. Perhaps, however, we should mention in our manuscript essentially what is pointed out above.
I am glad to hear that your tetrachloronickelate structure is moving along well.
I am getting a letter off to Dr. Green. We have one very good man here on the project now, in addition, of course, to Dick Marsh and other people. This is Dr. Burns, a Scot, vho has spent several years in Ghana.
I am also writing to Dr. Ian Bush, although I do not remember him. We have money permitting us to give stipends of as much as $5000 a year to men with M.D. degrees who want to work for a Ph.D. degree. We probably could pay even more.
I enclose my check for $148, to cover the books listed in your letter, which you have purchased for me. This covers the Penguins listed and also H. K. Lewis and Co. I am not sure that I have told you that I am writing a book. I have been having an argument with Teller - I tried to get LIFE to publish a reply, about 5000 words, to the article by Teller and Latter in the 10 February issue, and they refused. They were willing only to publish a short letter from me, which I submitted. However, I decided to reply anyway, by writing a book, to have the title No More War! I had just made this decision when I got a letter from Barbara Kamb, saying that Dodd, Mead and Company were interested in publishing a book by me, on this subject. Things moved along fast, and I now have written 3 of the 9 chapters, and I expect to write the ninth one tomorrow. It is scheduled to appear on 11 August. It takes about this long to get out a book. Also, I spoke in the biggest auditorium on the Berkeley campus, to about 1200 students and other auditors, on the U.C.L.A. campus, and also to good sized groups on the Santa Barbara and Riverside campuses of the University of California. Also, I have submitted a paper to the National Academy of Sciences - that is, I have sent in the abstract for a paper to be presented at the April meeting - on longevity and obesity, in which I point out that Teller made a mistake by a factor of 1440 in comparing the effect of being overweight with the fallout effect. I am looking forward to presenting this talk.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]

Dearest love: I've been feeling bad - but I've decided that it's just that I'm lonesome for you. Let's make a rigid rule that I go no place without you. I wish that you were here with me - but I've been busy. Chow (Priscilla's Chinese) is here, also Oliphant. Mr. Eaton is an interesting fellow. We met all afternoon, planning an agenda. The Russians, Topchiev and others, are to come tomorrow - they missed their plane. There is snow on the ground here, but its not very cold, about 31°. Pearson has just lost the election. I wish that you were here. It would be worth the money - any amount! I love you. I think that I'll telephone yoou & then go to bed.
Your own
Paddy
