- Letter from LP to Janith Henshaw, RE: LP is not sure if Henshaw wants him to answer her letter as he did not receive a Nobel Peace Prize, rather he won the prize for Chemistry. LP does think however, that Albert Schweitzer, who won the Peace Prize some years ago, in giving an address in Oslo did have some significant effect on the world. And if do reach an agreement on stopping bomb tests, Dr. Schweitzer can take credit for that. Department of State
Washington 25, D.C.
Dear Mr. Merrill:
I thank you for your letter of 16 January.
I do not think that there is anything in your letter that justifies the discriminatory action of the State Department in preventing visits of Soviet biologists to the California Institute of Technology, when they are allowed to visit other similar institutions.
It was my understanding from my telephone conversation with Mr. Lawrence Mitchell that the inclusion of the California Institute of Technology in a closed zone had no logical justification, but was purely arbitrary.
There is an erroneous statement in the last paragraph in your letter. The only telephone calls that I made in connection with the visit of Professor Orekhovich were to Mr. Mitchell of the State Department and to Dr. Jerome Gross of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. I have not had any telephone conversation or any other contact with Ambassador Zaroubin or with anyone else in the U.S.S.R. Embassy.
I have been told by Dr. Gross that Professor Orekhovich was keenly disappointed at not being able to visit our laboratory, where such basic work on collagen and other proteins has been done; I surmise that the telephone calls to Ambassador Zaroubin were made by Professor Orekhovich, which would be a reasonable thing for him to do. In any case, I did not have any contact with Ambassador Zaroubin, and I trust that you will correct your records accordingly, and not repeat this erroneous statement. Also, I trust that you will give me an explanation of the error.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:w
