23 January 1958
Dear Peter:
In accordance with your request, I have sent $18 to the Scientific American for the subscription for Dr. Phillips.
I agree with you that something must be done about the international situation. I shall probably go to another meeting of scientists, a small private one, in Canada early in April, and there perhaps will be a big one during the summer.
George Kennan's lectures on the BBC attracted a considerable amount of interest here too. It was terrible that Acheson should have criticized him.
I hope that you can get the calculations for water done right away. It is now more than a year since this work was began and carried along - nearly as far as it is now, and the longer we wait the harder it will be to get the stuff in shape for publication. Please send along what you have, right away, and I might see what I can do about getting anything more that needs to be done taken care of here.
I enclose your notice of earnings (perhaps also withholdings) from the California Institute of Technology. Do you have a form for reporting your income tax? If you want me to do so, let as know and I shall get one. I think that they have to be returned by 15 April.
Mama and I had a fine time in New York. We enjoyed our talk with Dag Hammersjkold. However, Mamma came down with the flu on the last day that we were there, and, although she managed to get home, she was sick for three more days, with a fever, and still isn't feeling very well. Then I was in bed for four days with a fever too, and I also am not yet in very good shape.
Last night we had Eddie and Ruth Hughes and John Kendrew here for dinner. John gave his lecture on the 6-A structure at the seminar yesterday afternoon. Everyone seemed pleased.
Mama and Pat (your aunt Mrs. Briggs) and I are going to drive up to the ranch tomorrow, coming back on Monday.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
