January 2nd, 1958
Dear Mamma,
I can’t really begin to thank you for all the delicious presents, as always just what everyone wanted. Peter is in heaven, a different sort of breakfast every day. He was getting quite cutting about the monotony, and even Thomas had taken to pushing away his bowl of Parex hardly tasted. I love the dress, and summer just must come this year. I wore the other one for a few hours at Christmas, but nearly froze to death. Thomas’s pajamas are too big, fortunately, as I had just struggled to make some to fit him now and was afraid they would become redundant. This nice soft material is not attainable here; either it is very bulky (hard on the washing) or thin and shift. Also, it is hard to them with feet, which I like. The cake is delicious but Peter says it should be kept; so we are trying to save it. We are planning to have a minor celebration here, this weekend I think. We had offered to entertain a friend of ours at Christmas before we decided to go to my parents, so will do this now instead. The things you sent are just right to fill out the menu, as I already had made two puddings, months ago, but no cake. I am not much good at cakes, always flame it on the oven. We had one of my puddings at my parents. It was most peculiar, as though steeped in syrup of figs, and everyone was most rude about it. Christmas there was not too bad at all, mainly because Peter behaved with such admirable restraint, and I got into only minor arguments with my father to keep him happy. Thomas adored my brother, for some reason, so they were nice for each other and stayed out of mischief. Thomas is developing amazingly now, he runs around everywhere, plays games both formal and improvised with great intelligence and accuracy, and eats all his food instead of refusing most of it. He is not spoiled by too much attention, and doesn’t demand it here. I think he is the sweetest thing my parents have ever seen. They said (often) that he is just like me, except for the expression. I used to glower. He is taller than most 2 ½ year-olds.
Love to you all, and good health and happiness for the new year,
Julia
