4 December 1957
Mr. David Ehrenfeld
1061 Eugene Drive
Fullerton, California
Dear Mr. Ehrenfeld:
The question that you raise in your letter of 1 December is indeed an interesting one.
I have tried to decide what acts should be considered moral and what immoral. This question is, as I understand it, the basis of the theory of values.
I do not think that I take the question of survival of a society or survival of the human race as a criterion. I have decided to use the causing or prevention of human suffering (even, but in a smaller degree, animal suffering) as a criterion. I say that acts are immoral if they increase the amount of human suffering.
I must admit that I have not tried to develop a theory of values on this basis that is rigorous and logical. I have never been greatly interested in questions of rigor, in definition or proof.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:w

11 December 1957
Dr. W. F. Libby
United States Atomic Energy Commission
Washington 25, D.C.
Dear Bill:
I am glad to have your letter of 3 December, about the paper by Bratoz and Hadzi in the November Journal of Chemical Physics. I heard Professors Bratoz and Hadzi report on this paper, both in Paris and in Ljubljana, the latter being at the International Symposium on Hydrogen Bonds. It seems to me that their theory is a good one; something closely similar was proposed by Pimentel.
As to applying infrared absorption by hydrogen bonds in the study of protein structure, I may say that a certain amount of this work has been done. In particular, some very useful results have been obtained by measurement of the infrared dichroism, especially in fibrous proteins. So far as I am aware, not much has been done so far in the analysis of absolute intensities as a means of determining the number of hydrogen bonds present in proteins. I suppose that the difficulties in the determination of absolute intensity values are so great that no one has thought it worth while to work hard on this job. Relative intensities, as in the measurement of infrared dichroism, are of course much more easily determined.
You probably know that the field of determination of the structure of crystalline globular proteins by X-ray diffraction is beginning to look more promising than it has before. Kendrew, in Cambridge, has been making rapid progress. There is still doubt as to whether or not an essentially complete structure determination will be possible within the next five or ten years, but there is some chance that it can be done.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

17 December 1957
Mr. Don C. McMillan
City Manager
Pasadena, California
Dear Mr. McMillan
I am writing to remind you that you said that you would write to me about the water drainage situation on Fairpoint Street after you had received a report from the city engineers. I have not yet got the letter that you said that you would send.
You will recall that my wife and I own property at 3500 Fairpoint Street, just at the northeast corner of the City of Pasadena, and that some time ago the drainage of storm water as determined by the natural contour was greatly changed by the action of the City of Pasadena, which installed a paved street and curbing in such a way as to collect storm water from an extensive front and to discharge it so as to cause a stream of water to run across our property, during storm periods, thus causing erosion and other damage to our property. The situation has been slightly aggravated by the action of our neighbor to the west, Mr. Elmer, who has changed the contours on his land in such a way as to change the flow of the runoff water.
I shall look forward to hearing from you about this matter.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:w

17 December 1957
Dear Peter:
I am sorry to have been so slow about sending you the set of slides of the water pictures that you asked for in your letter of 26 November. I read the letter carelessly, and thought that you were asking for a set of prints. I haven't been able to find a set of prints; although I know that I have a set somewhere around here -- I think that I gave you a set when I was in London, but I am not sure. Now I have got out a set of slides, and am sending them on to you.
Dorothy Hodgkin has been here for several days. We have had a good time. Thomas has been here also.
I have been supposed to write an article for the hydrogen-bond symposium that was held in Ljubljana, where I spoke about the structure of water, but I have not yet succeeded in getting it written. Professor Nadzi probably has given me up as hopeless. I hope that you will get some of the calculations made, in order that we can publish a detailed paper. If we don't watch out, someone else will do the job, especially after my talk in Ljubljana. Also, I was interested to see the article of which you sent me photostats, on similar ideas in relation to silica glass.
The reference to Cross, Burnham, and Layton is J.A.CS., 59, 1134 (1937).
I am pleased to hear about your crystal containing nickel and arsenic. I judge that the 8 arsenic atoms are present as unipositive cations, with three benzene rings and three methyl groups attached. Presumably the nickel has tetrahedral ligancy, with 4 chlorine atoms about. We could expect the nickel-chlorine distance to be approximately 2.23 Å (I don't remember that we have any reliable values for tetrahedral radius of nickel, and the value 1.24 may well be in error). This would lead to 3.62 Å for the edge of the tetrahedron, an excellent value for the contact distance of chlorine atoms, inasmuch as it is just twice the ionic radius of chloride ion, which I have taken to be also the van der Waals radius of chlorine. Accordingly the structure might approximate the fluorite structure, with the tetrahedral arsenic cations replacing the fluoride ion and the nickel tetrachloride anion replacing the calcium ion. The decrease in symmetry would fellow from the fact that there is one methyl group attached to each arsenic, together with three phenyl groups. I do not see any reason to expect that the four nickel-chlorine distances would not be equal, and the tetrahedron close to regular. It is not possible to conclude from the space-group symmetry that the nickel has tetrahedral coordination, rather than trigonal pyramidal or even trigonal planar, but I think that it is highly likely that there are tetrachloronickelate lens present, approximating regular tetrahedral structure.
I suppose that the orientation may well be such that three chlorines project into each of four of the small cubes, and only one into each of the other four, rather than four in four of the small cubes and none in the other four. The arsenics, of course, have to be of two kinds. You might well be able to predict the structure reasonably closely, if you make some good packing models. I should think that it would be better to attack the problem in this way rather than to calculate a three-dimensional Patterson and go on from there, because the Fourier calculations for cubic crystals are pretty complicated. If you were to make a complete structure determination, you could end up with some least-squares refinements. It seems to me to be a pretty interesting crystal, and I could understand Nyholm's being interested in it.
Crellin and Lucy and the baby are at the ranch this week, on their way from Portland to Pasadena. I bought a lettering set, and mailed it to San Simeon, and Crellin bought a drawing board and T-square. I had taken some of the drawings for THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND up there - sketches and unfinished drawings - and Crellin is supposed to get a lot of work done on the preparation of drawings, during this Christmas vacation. It has been raining now for several days, so probably he has had to stay inside, and he may have accomplished a good bit. Perhaps we shall all go to the ranch over New Year's day. We had Thanksgiving there, with Luther Williams and his wife and children and their husbands' wives and children as guests - they also brought a turkey and some food.
There was a bad fire in the mountains at Thanksgiving time. It burned over 25,000 acres, in the region north of Monrovia. However, it did not come closer than about 4 miles to houses, those in Fish Canyon, north of Azusa, and was at no time closer than perhaps 8 miles from Pasadena.
I enclose a check for $750, for living expenses for January, February, and March 1958.
Much love from
Linus Pauling
P.S. Dorothy says that you spoke very well at the Royal Society meeting on water. I have been wanting to find out what had happened there. It is too bad that we did not know about it in time, or in such a way, as to permit you to present one of the papers - I do not know what was said there, but I shall try to get Dorothy to tell me, if she isn't kept too busy between now and the time when she leaves, a few hours from now. 19 December 1957
Dear Linus and Anita:
Under separate cover I am sending you a Christmas present-it is being sent by surface transportation (boat) and may well not reach you until after Christmas, but it should be there within a day or two after Christmas, in any case.
The present is a set of three motion pictures, each of them taking 50 minutes for presentation. The three together constitute a set of three lectures on valence and molecular structure. The films were made in our laboratory, with the support of a grant from the National Science Foundation. The National Science Foundation made a number of sets of prints, which were then made available during the summer of 1957, to the various summer institutes for teachers of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. I do not know how many sets of prints were made, nor how many different summer institutes made use of them. There were about 100 of these summer institutes held in 1957. One teacher told me that he had attended the summer institute in Berkeley, together with 200 other teachers, and that these three films were presented one on each of three succeeding afternoons. He said that about 100 teachers attended each of the three showings.
The National Science Foundation gave me two sets, and I have decided to give one set to you. Perhaps the chemistry department at the University of Hawaii would like to borrow them from you sometime, for a showing.
The California Institute of Technology also has two sets, and I am planning to show the films sometime this term, in place of three of my lectures to the freshmen.
There is the possibility that the sound track on one or more of your films is not good enough. I had planned to go through the prints before sending them to you, but it has turned out that I have been too busy to do so. However, if the sound track is not good enough, please return the film to me, and I shall see if the National Science Foundation will replace it with a better one.
Mama has been very busy recently getting ready for Christmas. I have been busy too with many activities. Tonight I am to fly to New York, for a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation, a foundation that supports fellows working in the field of arthritis, rheumatic fever, and related diseases, and in scientific fields that have some connection to these diseases. I shall come back home day after tomorrow.
Crellin and Lucy and Cheryl are spending this week at the ranch, on their way from Portland to Pasadena. Crellin is making some drawings for a new edition of THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND, and I trust that he is hard at work up there. I think that we shall go to the ranch a day or two after Christmas, and stay for about a week. I am to speak at the Y.M.C.A. meeting of high school students at Asilomar on Saturday 28 December. Asilomar is between Carmel and Monterey.
Much love from

- Letter from E. Bright Wilson, Jr., Department of Chemistry at Harvard University, to LP, RE: Says that he was interested to read LP's manuscript about barrier to internal rotation and that he is convinced that the probable cause is the interaction of the electrons in the C-H bonds. Explain to LP that he believes that the barrier does not change much when the hydrogens are pushed apart. Informs LP that the conclusion in his paper which stated that methyl germane must have a high barrier was incorrect and that Mr. Laurie discovered the error the previous week. Tells LP that there is also uncertainty in the numbers he published about methyl mercaptan. Explains that Mr. Herschbach and Mr. Krisher have found the equilibrium orientation for propylene. 23 December 1957
Dear Peter:
I have just ran across a paper on potassium nickel sulfate and related compounds that might possibly interest you, although it is not very interesting.
It is by Mmes. Nathalie Domassieux and Colette Malard, Comptes rend., 245, 1544 (1957), the issue of 28 October. Its title is Ihermogravimetric Study of Simple and Double Sulfates of Nickel and of Potassium, Rubidium, and Cesium. The authors have taken nickel sulfate heptahydrate, heated it at the rate of 150 degrees per hour, and measured the weight as a function of temperature. They found that it lost 6 water molecules rather rapidly, from about 100 degrees to 150 degrees. It remained constant at the monohydrate to about 400 degrees, and lost the remaining water molecule. Then at about 800 degrees, sulfur trioxide was liberated, leaving nickel oxide, NiO.
When the double salt K2Ni (SO4)2•6N2O was heated, it lost all of its water between about 120 degrees and 200 degrees. The sulfur trioxide, or at least some of it, was lost between 880 degrees and 1000 degrees. Essentially the same results were obtained with the rubidium and cesium salts.
References are given to some other people who have studied dehydration of these salts, and also to an earlier note by the same authors, Comptes rend., 245, 1429 (1957). I have the earlier issue somewhere at home, but I shall not hunt it out unless you are enough interested to want me to read it.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]

- Letter from Richard Thruelsen, Associate Editor of the Saturday Evening Post, to LP, RE: Tells LP that The Post staff can not support LP's prohibition of nuclear weapons testing. Says that they do not question the validity of LP's thesis, however since there are so many grey areas involved in the subject, the rapidly changing world might date such an article during its preparation for publication in a general magazine. Suggests that, concerning his contribution to their new series, LP writes an article on the structure of proteins. 27 December 1957
When I heard from Jerry Gross (I think it was on 12 December) that Orekhovich would not be allowed to come to Pasadena, I telephoned Mr. Lawrence Mitchell, in the State Department, Executive 3-3111, Ext. 5991, and urged him to arrange by the end of the week for Qrekhovich to come to Pasadena on Tuesday 17 December, to give his lecture "Pro-collagen as a Special Group of Connective Tissue Proteins." He said that Berkeley is open, but that Pasadena, San Francisco, and much of Los Angeles are closed to anybody holding a Russian passport. He was not very optimistic - he said that if the Department of State were to make exceptions, then the regulation preventing Russian visitors from going to certain places in the United States would have little effect in applying pressure on the Russian Government. I said that it seemed to me that there was discrimination against the California Institute of Technology. He said that there was no special reason for having Pasadena on the closed list, and that it had been put there only last month.

Dr. Gary Felsenfeld
National Institutes of Health
Bethesda 14, Maryland
Dear Gary:
I am pleased to have your letter of 20 December, and to have verification of the rumor that reached me that you were going to be in the University of Pittsburgh Biophysics Department beginning next June. Congratulations also on the note that this will be after the expected arrival of your first child.
As to your work on the NiCl4
-- ion; I may say that I think that Peter Pauling may have some information about it. Professor Nyholm and his group have synthesized some cubic crystals with tri-phenylmethylarsonium cations and presumably the NiCl4
-- anion, if I remember Peter's letter correctly. I think that the crystallographic information is such that the nickel atom has to have trigonal symmetry, and that accordingly the tetrahedron might be elongated along a trigonal axis, but not along a four-fold inversion axis.
It is not clear to me whether or not Peter plans to make a complete structure determination of his crystals.
Everything is going along well here. Matt Meselson has done some fine work, showing that the cells of E. coli in one generation contain molecules of DNA that consist of 50 percent new material and 50 percent old material, in each molecule.
I have just written a paper on restricted rotation around the carbon-carbon single bond.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by Linus Pauling
Signed in his absence :w
