- Letter from Dickinson Richards to LP, RE: Richards does not believe that he should sign LP's Appeal even though he shares the same humanitarian feelings as LP. - Letter from Dr. F. Wessely to LP RE: Written in German. Says that in his experience of two World Wars, petitions have not been used to much great effect although they may have the best of intentions. So he won't sign the Appeal. [Filed under LP Safe Contents, Drawer 2 Folder 2.001]

- Letter from LP to Dr. Robert H. Maybury, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, University of Redlands RE: Explains he would be happy to meet with him and discuss the possibility of going on sabbatical to the Soviet Union but that the appointment would probably have to be put of for three or four weeks. Discusses some things that he will need to have worked out before he went on sabbatical there, such as who would support him financially and where he and his family would live. 23 December 1957
Dear Peter:
I have just ran across a paper on potassium nickel sulfate and related compounds that might possibly interest you, although it is not very interesting.
It is by Mmes. Nathalie Domassieux and Colette Malard, Comptes rend., 245, 1544 (1957), the issue of 28 October. Its title is Ihermogravimetric Study of Simple and Double Sulfates of Nickel and of Potassium, Rubidium, and Cesium. The authors have taken nickel sulfate heptahydrate, heated it at the rate of 150 degrees per hour, and measured the weight as a function of temperature. They found that it lost 6 water molecules rather rapidly, from about 100 degrees to 150 degrees. It remained constant at the monohydrate to about 400 degrees, and lost the remaining water molecule. Then at about 800 degrees, sulfur trioxide was liberated, leaving nickel oxide, NiO.
When the double salt K2Ni (SO4)2•6N2O was heated, it lost all of its water between about 120 degrees and 200 degrees. The sulfur trioxide, or at least some of it, was lost between 880 degrees and 1000 degrees. Essentially the same results were obtained with the rubidium and cesium salts.
References are given to some other people who have studied dehydration of these salts, and also to an earlier note by the same authors, Comptes rend., 245, 1429 (1957). I have the earlier issue somewhere at home, but I shall not hunt it out unless you are enough interested to want me to read it.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
- Letter from LP to Professor H. Staudinger, RE: [In German] LP is thankful for the signatures that Staudinger has sent to him. [Filed under LP Peace: (An Appeal by Scientists to the Governments and People of the World, 1957-1959), Box #5.002, Folder #2.1]
- Letter from LP to Vernon Ingram, Cambridge. RE: Informs him that he is able to offer $7500 for a year appointment. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (I: Correspondence, 1958) #185.19]
- Letter from Linda Nelson, Executive Secretary, National Nephrosis Foundation, Southern California Chapter, to LP RE: States that LP's term as a member of the Scientific Advisory Council has expired. Asks if LP can submit the names of two people to succeed this position. [Letter from LP to Nelson January 3, 1958] [LP Science: (National Nephrosis Foundation, Inc., 1954-1958), Box #14.026, Folder #26.1]
- Letter from Richard Thruelsen, Associate Editor of the Saturday Evening Post, to LP, RE: Tells LP that The Post staff can not support LP's prohibition of nuclear weapons testing. Says that they do not question the validity of LP's thesis, however since there are so many grey areas involved in the subject, the rapidly changing world might date such an article during its preparation for publication in a general magazine. Suggests that, concerning his contribution to their new series, LP writes an article on the structure of proteins. [Two letters from LP to Thruelsen, December 4, 1957] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1956-1963), Box #411, Folder #411.2]
- Letter from Russell Johnson to LP, RE: Johnson sends LP a sheet entitled "We Need More Scientists Like These" in which LP is quoted. Johnson is also sending LP a copy of an Open Letter to Dr. Killian. [Handwritten note on bottom by Johnson "P.S. you may consider speaking at a public meeting in New England Fall 1958? We're very much interested!" [Filed under LP Peace: (Assorted Peace Groups, Am), Box #4.009, Folder #9.4]
- Memo from Harden M. McConnell to LP, RE: Cannot give a very high rating to the enclosed proposal to the PHS by Kowalsky, since most of the budget and associated research plan deal with application of nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to biochemical problems, a technique that Kowalsky is not very experienced with.
