Dear Mom and Pop,
We arrived here in town yesterday around noon after an uneventful drive. We spent Monday night in our sleeping bags in Castle Crags state park near Dunsmuir. It is pleasant to be back in Oregon, where everything is green and lush. It is also fun to get back to Reed, and see all of our friends again. I hunted Dr Livermore up right away, and had a nice chat with him. We have been house-hunting today, without too much success at this point. We have a couple of places that we are considering, but nothing too encouraging has turned up so far.
I have also done some car shopping, and was decided that a '57 Ford was the thing to get. Not only will the to deal on a '58, but there is going to be a five per cent increase. Also it turned out that one Ford dealer just happened to have on order just exactly what we wanted, four door station wagon, solid white, with overdrive, wireless, heater, and outside rear view mirror is $2425.00, plus $12.00 for registration. They are allowing $717 for the old Studebaker, which seems to be about as good a 'deal' as is available. The car is coming to him with white wall tires, which he will trade for ordinary ones, and a clock, which he will throw in at no extra cost. It is due to be built on the 26th of this month, and the more or less promised delivery by the end of the month. He said that they would get somewhere near $75 for the Stude, so there is a $642 discount from the list price of ca. $3100. I think that I am satisfied in it being a reasonable deal.
I described my summer work to Dr. Livermore to some extent, and he appeared quite interested. I suspect that my ideas of spending some time around Reed doing immunological work may be received with interest, which is a good sign. I plan to discuss things at length with him sometime, after we get settled and the school year is rolling along again. I suspect that I may be able to get hired here to do work next summer, but I don't know as yet. Work is progressing on the new dormitory, but the science building is still in the money-raising stage. Dr. Livermore hinted that some success may be achieved before long, but at this time it was still up in the air. There are 250 Freshmen this year, so many that they have kicked a good number of juniors and seniors out of the dorms. It looks like the old place is expanding a little.
Well, to bed. My cold has not worsened, but neither has it lessened.

16 September 1957
Dr. Sam T. Gibson, Director
Blood Program
The American National Red Cross
National Headquarters
Washington 13, D.C.
Dear Dr. Gibson:
In answer to your letter of 3 September, I send you herewith a copy of my paper "The Molecular Basis of Genetics," which covers the subject matter of the address that I gave at the 112th Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Chicago last year.
You will note that I start out with the statement "I am sure that most mental disease is chemical in origin..."
I gave my address without use of a manuscript, and I am sure that it was not identical with the published paper. I do not remember exactly what I said, but I may have made some reference to the work of Dr. Heath of Tulane University Medical School. Dr. Heath has published an account of his experiments on the injection into normal human beings of blood from schizophrenic individuals. He reported some peculiarities in behavior of the recipients. The reported effects, which have been attributed to a substance taraxein presumed to be present in the blood of the donors, were only transitory. I am not sure how much significance is to be given to these experiments, and I am confident that I did not make the statement that if blood from a schizophrenic were transfused into a normal person, the normal person would have schizophrenia in all its manifestations.
In answer to Mr. Greer's question, I would say that I doubt that any schizophrenia is being dispersed through the blood banks. This is not a problem at all comparable to that of, say, dispersing hepatitis virus.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
