Dear Mom:
Many thanks for your letters and for the check. The money situation is as follows:
Total put in account: $1112.14
Total spent: $945.67
This breaks down as follows:
Deposits: $500.00 from you; $100.00 from you Birthday present; $250.00 from you; $103.57, $103.57 my pay checks; $30.00 from Mrs. Jordan, June payment; $25.00 wedding present for us. Total: $112.14
Of the checks that have been written, $271.70 were for us, 555.97 was to pay bills, and $98.00 was a loan to Linda, which she ought to repay but probably won't until you tell her to. This leaves a balance of $166.47. There is a $65 bill from Happys, and a $294.00 bill from the Burrows for auto insurance. Of the payment Mrs. Jordan made a month ago, I gave Linda $40 for my contribution to the food fund, Lucy $20 to shop, kept $10, and deposited $30. Of course, the seventy that I kept for our expenses will be added to my expenses for the summer, making $361.70 to date. Linda has been bad with the food fund, making a huge salad for a dinner party that she was going to; then she accuses me of being too stingey [sic] when I tell her I can't afford to feed a lot of people, esp. when we aren't even invited to the party. I had to pay Huntington Hosp. $204 for expenses and haven't received the bill from the obstetrician as yet. It will be $175. I think we ought to break even on money this summer, even with the baby bills, but I'm not sure.
Dick Lippman's brother-in-law is looking after Cheryl, and seems to be a very good man. Cheryl is just a darling, and is as good as can be. Linda complains about everything! The weekend when Lucy and Cheryl came home I asked Linda to keep the visitors to a minimum, and she had a crowd here all weekend. She complains about fixing breakfast for the Mills', apparently forgetting that Mrs. Mills has prepared every dinner for the past five days, and payed [sic] for more than half of them. I tried unsuccessfully to reimburse the Mills' for the food they have bought us.
Love
Crellin

The Editor
The New York Times
Dear Sir:
In my letters to you of 9 June and 7 July 1957, I pointed out that a false statement about the support of the National Academy of Sciences on the biological effects of atomic radiation had been made in the New York Times of 9 June 1957, and that I was disturbed by what seemed to be a contribution by the Times to an effort to mislead about an important matter.
In your reply of 12 July you mention only the article "Pauling to Press Atom Ban Abroad," which I had already seen before writing my letter of 7 July, and which contains no mention of the false statement.
Am I to conclude that you do not propose, for the benefit of your great body of readers, to correct the untrue statement that you published on 9 June, that was reported by the National Academy of Sciences that "a cumulative 50-roentgen exposure in 30 years is harmless?" If you do not publish a correction I request that you publish my letter of 9 June to you, omitting the last paragraph, which has been taken care of by your publication of the full text of the appeal on 12 June. Sincerely yours, L.P.
