Dear Barry:
I may try to get foreign scientists to sign the Appeal too.
Do you not think that it would be good to get more American scientists to sign? If you and other Washington University professors do, would you go about sending out new copies for signatures? I suggest 10 October 1957 as deadline, to give some time during the Fall term.
Also, I suggest adding the material written below.
I feel well pleased with the success of the Appeal.
Sincerely,
Linus Pauling
In a few days before 1 June 1957, 2000 signatures were obtained, including the following:
(Here I copied the names at bottom of p.5 & on p.6 of statement 7 June 1957 to Holifield omitting those on printed form.) – sent by Mrs Wulf
[Barry – Omit any of these that you want – add others from mimeographed list if you want.]

Honolulu, T.H.
Dear Linie:
I must say that I do not have the detailed technical knowledge that would be required to answer the question asked by Dr. Robert G. Hunter. I think that it should indeed be possible to sterilize the rice paper by use of radioactive rays or beta rays. Radioactivity would probably be the easiest way, but of course there are problems connected with the handling of radioactive substances. I have asked Dr. Harrison Brown to write to you, about the people that Dr. Hunter might approach.
Thanks for sending the H-bomb petition with two signatures. I was glad to see your signature. They have just about stopped coming in now, because of the 1 June date. Today a cable came from an American scientist in Germany, presenting his signature.
I have been terribly busy. Part of the reason is that I had not intended to get this petition up, but, as is mentioned in the enclosed news release, I was encouraged by the people in Washington University in St. Louis. I am sure that it was a good thing to do.
Mamma and I are leaving for Paris. We shall be there for six weeks (that is, in France, also one week out while we visit Peter and Julia and Thomas, and I give a lecture in Cambridge), then we go to Yugoslavia for a week and to Russia for three weeks. In Yugoslavia I am to give the opening address at an international conference on hydrogen bonds in biological and clinical substances, and in Moscow I am to speak at an international conference on the origin of life. We think that it will be an interesting experience altogether, although we wish that the trip were not quite such a long one, because it does not leave us much time to spend at the ranch during the summer.
When Mamma and I were up there last week we saw a doe with two little twin spotted fauns, in the hollow where the eucalyptus trees are.
Thanks for sending me the clippings. Give my love to Anita and the children.
Love from
