- Letter from Linus Pauling to Crellin Pauling. [Filed under LP Biographical: Box #5.048, Folder #48.6]
4 March 1957
Dear Crellin:
According to my record, you were made $321.00 for your services in making drawings for THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND during the year 1956.
I hope that everything is going along well with you. Mama and Linda and I are in fine shape. We had a good time yesterday at my birthday party - Elfriede and Barclay were with us. It was Elfriede's birthday, too.
Mama and I spent ten days at the ranch. We came home last Sunday, after having been delayed for about two hours and a half because we had trouble getting the car from the place where it was in front of the cabin over to the road above the barn. The yard was muddy, and the grass made it slippery. We put out hay for a while, and when the hay was not effective, because the slope was too great just before the gate, we put down pieces of wall board. We also had trouble getting up the last hundred feet of the road to the highway, but finally made it.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
P.S. To Lucy also.

5 March 1957
Dear Peter:
I think that I should prefer to pay for the microscope, even though you turn it while you are in London, rather than to have you make a contribution toward its purchase.
I think that you are right in saying that deuterium oxide forms stronger bonds than protein oxide. The increased strength of the bonds - both the covalent oxygen-hydrogen bonds and the so-called hydrogen bonds - can be attributed, I think, to a smaller zero-point vibrational energy for deuterium than for proteum, because of its larger mass. If the vibrational frequency and the temperature are such that the zero-point energy is considerably larger than kT, then the difference in zero-point energy is essentially a difference in bond energy. Perhaps it would be worth while, as you suggest, to get diffraction data for deuterium oxide. I have a feeling, however, that the difference in structure is pretty small. Neutron scattering is, of course, a useful way of finding where the hydrogen atoms are. Have you seen the paper by Peterson and Levy on ice? It was in the last Journal of Chemical Physics. In the case of water, we are, I think, pretty sure where the hydrogen atoms are, relative to the oxygen atoms, but something might be discovered by further neutron experiments.
Did I tell you that Barclay Bay is planning to carry out an experimental investigation of the high-pressure forms of ice?
I hope that your structure investigations of the rhenium chloride compounds go along well.
I haven't done anything much on the water paper recently. Tonight I am going to talk about it at the American Association of Clinical Chemists - I had to give a talk to them because I am being made an honorary member, and I was tired of talking about the same old things.
Mama is taking French lessons from Berlitz, 6 hours a week, in preparation of our trip to France.
Much love from
Linus Pauling

Dear Dr. Thorson:
I am pleased to have received your letter of 25 February, and I have written to Professor Davidson of Kansas University about you.
The Jahn-Teller effect is an interesting one, and I am sure that something significant remains to be learned about it. I suppose that it may be that anti-ferromagnetism in some cases can be attributed to it. The verb attributed is too strong - I mean that the ordered anti-ferromagnetism structures, involving decrease in symmetry at the centers of certain atoms, can be correlated with the effect.
I agree with you that this is not the time to go to Israel.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dr. Reino W. Hakala
310 Benham Avenue
Bridgeport 4, Connecticut
Dear Dr. Hakala:
In answer to your letter of 2 January 1957 I can make the following statements. In the Atomic Energy Commission Report for 1953 there are given values of gamma radiation over a 13-weeks period due to fallout from the atom bomb tests that had been made, for a number of communities in Nevada and Colorado. For example, the average exposure to radiation of the 4500 inhabitants of St. George, Utah was 3.5 r for this period, and values around 5 to 9 were reported for other communities. I conclude that a number of inhabitants in this region, perhaps around 10,000, have received average exposures of 5 roentgen to 10 roentgen as a result of bomb tests.
Professor Harden Jones of the Bonner Laboratory of the University of California in Berkeley has concluded from the analysis of mortality rates for Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors and for people who have received radiation treatments for various diseases, as well as from a consideration of animal experiments, that human beings probably have a decrease in life expectancy of 2 weeks per roentgen of radiation.
Accepting this figure, I calculate that the approximately 13,000 people in Nevada and Colorado have a decrease in life expectancy of 10 to 20 weeks.
The calculation of the number of defective children that can be expected to be born can be made with the use of some reasonable assumptions about mutations. At the present time about 2 million seriously defective children are born out of every hundred million children, because of bad genes. If we attribute all of these bad genes to natural radioactivity, principally cosmic rays, we have a basis for making a calculation. The amount of cosmic radiation received by people during the first 50 years of their life, when half their children have been born, is about 4 r. A possibility is that artificial radiation exposure of 4 r on top of this would double the number of mutations, and that the number of defectives would accordingly be doubled. It may be that mutations are caused also by something other than radiation, in which case the number of defective children caused by fallout radiation would be less than that given by this calculation. There is considerable uncertainty about estimated values in this field, but I think that we should consider the worst possible case, rather than the best possible case.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

11 March 1957
Dear Mr. Bogart:
I have been pleased to receive your letter of 7 March, and interested to read your manuscript on a possible means of mapping complex molecular structures.
I must say that I do not know enough about the practical problems of detecting the flow of very small quantities of energy, nor, indeed, about moving a probe relative to a surface in such a way that the position of the atomic point of the probe would be significant to within a fraction of an atomic diameter. Nevertheless, I feel that your idea deserves to be given serious consideration. I remember reading in NATURE, some ten or fifteen years ago (perhaps even longer), an account of work done by an English investigator. He had fastened a needle to the mirror of an interferometer in such a way that he could raise the needle, move it a small distance, and drop it down again, until it came into contact with the freshly cleaved surface of a piece of mica. He determined the vertical coordinate for a fiducial point on the needle after each change in position, and he found that the vertical coordinates were integral multiples of 10 Å, relative to an arbitrary origin. Ten Å is known, from x-ray diffraction, to be the thickness of a single aluminosilicate layer in the mica crystal. Accordingly by this method of mechanical measurement he was able to show that mica consists of layers 10 Å thick.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling :W

12 March, 1957
Dear Daddy,
I enclose a list of books and expenses, including those scientific books I have purchased during the year but have delayed delivering to you.
I am working essentially full time on the water structures and hope to be through soon. I hope I can do some calculations in addition. For instance, it has been pointed out that dipole - dipole and quadrupole - quadrupole reactions are of greater energy than the van der Waals effects. I do not know that I know how to do the calculations.
I have the heavy atom positions of my cubic NiCl4
= structure from the three dimensional Patterson and shall proceed to the first Fourier soon. I do not know that the program for the calculation is immediately available.
I am considering accepting an offer of a lectureship in chemistry at University College London. It is more or less equivalent to an assistant professor with tenure. The salary is terrible by American and my standards, leaving me about $2300 a year after taxes but certainly a reasonable offer by British. The position is certainly very complimentary. It seems to me to be better than any American offer I might get at this stage though the financial position will be a worry.
However, in two or three years I shall be in a much stronger position if I stay here than I shall be if I were to return now to the United States and do odd jobs. I am almost certain to accept. I shall regret not being home and seeing you and Mamma more, and it is rather hard on Julia. I really should bring her to America and buy her clothes and give her a reasonable home.
The boys are getting worried about your coming to this conference. I hope you can do so.
Love from
Peter

Dear Alex:
I have recently been working over your structure of collagen, and have got into some difficulties.
First, let me say that it seems to me that your three-strand structure (either I or II) looks very promising. As you have pointed out, it is closely related to your polyglycine structure, and it accounts in a nice way for the necessity of having one-third of the residues glycine.
I think that I have checked practically all of the points that you raised. I have had difficulty with only one. Both in your letter to Nature and in your letters to me you said that two out of these three positions could be occupied by proline or hydroxyproline. I have not been able to see how this could be done, except by large distortions of the structure, involving breaking one of the hydrogen bonds, which are already only one-half as numerous as in the structure that I have been working on for a good number of years. It seems to me that the methylene group of the glycine residue has to be the alpha carbon close to the axis of your structure. This alpha carbon cannot then serve as part of a proline or hydroxyproline ring, and only the other two are left. But one of the other two has the adjacent groups, CO and NH, both involved in hydrogen bonds, and accordingly this alpha carbon also cannot be part of a proline or hydroxyproline ring, unless the hydrogen bond is broken. This leaves the third alpha carbon available for use in forming the ring. I have not been able to find any good basis for deciding between your structures I and II, except for the argument that you have presented, that one of the structures permits the hydroxyl group of hydroxyproline to form a hydrogen bond. In my models the hydrogen bond that looks best has been a carbonyl in the same polypeptide chain. It seems to me that considerable distortion is required to form a hydrogen bond to a carbonyl in an adjacent chain.
I shall look forward to hearing from you what the explanation is of my difficulty in getting proline and hydroxyproline into adjacent positions in your structure.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:LL

- Letter from Linus Pauling to Crellin Pauling. [Filed under LP Biographical: Box #5.048, Folder #48.6]
29 March 1957
Dear Crellin:
I am writing to ask you a question about Dr. Locher.
I think that you mentioned in a recent letter that he was thinking of leaving Reed. There is a possibility that the California Institute of Technology would be interested in making appointment of a man as master of the student houses, probably not until a year from now, however. The man should be one who is really interested in students, and who would devote himself to the solution of various problems involved in student house life. If Dr. Locher were to be given such an appointment, he probably would have an appointment also in the Humanities Division here, and would be expected to teach German or have some other teaching duties, and also would have some opportunity for research.
Do you think that he should be considered for a job of this sort? My impression is that you feel that his relations with students are unusually good, and that he is an unusually good man.
Please do not say anything about this to anybody. There is considerable uncertainty about what will be done here.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
