5 March 1957
Dear Peter:
I think that I should prefer to pay for the microscope, even though you turn it while you are in London, rather than to have you make a contribution toward its purchase.
I think that you are right in saying that deuterium oxide forms stronger bonds than protein oxide. The increased strength of the bonds - both the covalent oxygen-hydrogen bonds and the so-called hydrogen bonds - can be attributed, I think, to a smaller zero-point vibrational energy for deuterium than for proteum, because of its larger mass. If the vibrational frequency and the temperature are such that the zero-point energy is considerably larger than kT, then the difference in zero-point energy is essentially a difference in bond energy. Perhaps it would be worth while, as you suggest, to get diffraction data for deuterium oxide. I have a feeling, however, that the difference in structure is pretty small. Neutron scattering is, of course, a useful way of finding where the hydrogen atoms are. Have you seen the paper by Peterson and Levy on ice? It was in the last Journal of Chemical Physics. In the case of water, we are, I think, pretty sure where the hydrogen atoms are, relative to the oxygen atoms, but something might be discovered by further neutron experiments.
Did I tell you that Barclay Bay is planning to carry out an experimental investigation of the high-pressure forms of ice?
I hope that your structure investigations of the rhenium chloride compounds go along well.
I haven't done anything much on the water paper recently. Tonight I am going to talk about it at the American Association of Clinical Chemists - I had to give a talk to them because I am being made an honorary member, and I was tired of talking about the same old things.
Mama is taking French lessons from Berlitz, 6 hours a week, in preparation of our trip to France.
Much love from
Linus Pauling
- Letter from M.H. Sloan, National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council to LP RE: Sorry that LP cannot participate in the Conference on Hemoglobin. And asks if one of his associates would like to attend. Encloses a tentative schedule for the conference and briefly discusses some of the people who will be there. - Letter from Michael Cohen to LP RE: Defends some of his claims against LP's petition to stop atomic bomb testing. States that halting it should be done for political reasons and not the threat of fallout because it won't be that much. Uses evidence from the NAS report to dispute the number of defective children LP said there would be if testing continued, also uses the report to argue against LP's claims of shortening lifespan.
