11 February 1957
Dear Peter:
I enclose a rough draft of a part of our proposed manuscript on a theory of the structure of water, in order that you may continue to think about the matter.
There have been a couple of developments. I have made some calculations about van der Waals contact distances between water molecules, given in the manuscript. Also, I have ran across a neat way of packing complexes of 41 molecules together, so that 12 of them are only in van der Waals contact with their neighbors (each is held by a single hydrogen bond within its complex). This structure, which has 8 of the 41 complexes in a cubic unit, gives too big a peak at around 3.6 Å, and I have accordingly given it equal weight with two other structures in making the radial distribution calculation.
Also, I have talked with Professor Badger about the possibility
for the existence in water of water molecules that are not attached by hydrogen bonds at all, and are free to rotate. He is checking up on the matter.
Are you planning to attend the International Congress for Pure and Applied Chemistry in Paris? It is to be held on 18 to 24 July 1957.
You can get a circular about it by writing to Sixteenth International Congress for Pure and Applied Chemistry, Secretary General, 28 rue Saint Dominique, Paris 7[c?], France. Do you have a paper that you might present? You can see what the subjects are when you get the circular. In organic chemistry they include the solid compounds of transition metals, except complex compounds; combinations of boron with hydrogen and non-metallic elements; etc. In physical chemistry one topic is water in chemical compounds.
It seems to me that a possibility would be for you and me to present a short paper in this session on the structure of water. I would propose to attend the congress, but I would not submit a paper myself. Probably, if you are interested in doing this, it would be better for you to submit the paper alone. You could present the material that is in the manuscript that we are now writing.
I do not know whether or not I told you that Mama and I were invited to go to Yugoslavia, to a symposium on the hydrogen bond, which is to be held for a few days around 1 August. I am to give the opening address, which is, I think, to be on 29 July. I do not know whether or not it would be worth while for you to go to this congress also. There is a symposium on proteins in between. If you do come to Paris, on this professional trip, I would pay your expenses. By the way, I am thinking that my opening address in Jubulana would be in considerable part about our work on the structure of water - that is the only thing new relating to the hydrogen bond that I know to talk about.
Linda started work for Professor Corey today. She is working under the supervision of Dr. Leung on the crystallization of proteins and heavy metal complexes.
The last paragraph of our manuscript is on the structure of the high-pressure forms of ice. I have suggested structures for two of them, and Barclay Ray is going to make some intensity calculations to see how they come out. I have written to McFarlan who took the x-ray photographs, to see if we can get his films - his work was done 21 years ago. Barclay may try to make some x-ray photographs of his own.
Much love from
Linus Pauling
