Dr. John Chipman
Department of Metallurgy
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Dear Dr. Chipman:
I have been interested to read your letter of 14 January, and the discussion of the work of Carl Wagner that you enclosed.
During the last few weeks I have been thinking about the matter of submitting a nomination to the Nobel Committee for Chemistry. Unfortunately, I found that it was not possible for me, partially because of illness, to devote enough time to this effort to reach a decision, and accordingly I am not going to make a nomination this year. I may say that it is my opinion that the work that Professor Wagner has done is of great importance.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
