  Dear Mr. Ferreira:

  Mr. Yamane has brought me your letter of 13 December. I have read it, and also the summary of your article published in Ciencia e Cultura in 1955.

  I may say that it is my opinion that you are attempting to use the rough equations suggested by Sanderson and Halsinski in a more precise way than is justified. These equations are only approximate equations; there is considerable question as to the range of values of difference in electronegativity over which they are valid. In particular, it is my opinion that they cannot be relied upon when the amount of charge transferred from one atom to another is of the order of magnitude of an electronic charge. I do not think that you can properly conclude that the equations provide a criterion of pure ionic bonds. Indeed, I do not think that the concept of a pure ionic bond is a significant one, except as an idealization.

  If there is some point about this that you are not clear about, please let me know.
