Mr. P. T. Joseph
408 Pine Avenue
Niagara Falls, New York
Dear Mr. Joseph:
I have put off answering your letter of 27 October until I have had time to think about the question that you raise, that of the possibility of separating hafnium and zirconium by use of a suitable α-hydroxycarboxylic acid.
Now that I have thought about the matter, I may say that I agree with you in a general way, so far as the arguments go that you mention in your letter. I do not have any definite suggestions to make. Problems of this sort are usually solved by recourse to experiment.
With best wishes to you for the New Year,
I am
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by Linus Pauling
