Sir William Dunn School of Pathology

Dear Florey:
I am pleased to have your letter of 19 December, in which you ask for my opinion about Dr. M.H.F. Wilkins, in relation to the possibility of his election to the Royal Society.
It is my opinion that the recent extraordinary advances in our understanding of the structure and nature of the nucleic acids have been in large part the result of the contributions made by Wilkins. His work on the production of two different crystalline forms of deoxyribosenucleic acid and on the interpretation of the X-ray diagrams has been outstanding. I think that if this work had not been carried out by Dr. Wilkins we still would be deprived of the valuable and suggestive new ideas about nucleic acid structures.
I have had the pleasure of talking with Wilkins about his work on a few occasions, and have been favorably impressed by him. He is a modest man, clear headed, and with confidence in his work.
I believe that he is a suitable candidate for election.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
