Professor Carl M. Stevens
Department of Chemistry
State College of Washington
Pullman; Washington
Dear Professor Stevens:
I am pleased to have received your letter of 15 November. I may say that I enjoyed my visit to the northwest very much, and I am pleased that I was able to serve as the first Northwest Regional Lecturer for the group of local sections of the American Chemical Society in the Northwest.
Everything went along well on the trip. My wife
enjoyed herself, as did I. We had no trouble at all, except that the last morning, when we were still 80 miles from Pasadena and I had a lecture to give at 9 o'clock, I found at 7 o'clock that a tire was flat on my automobile. Fortunately, it was possible to change the tire, and still to get to Pasadena in time for me to give the lecture.
The following is the statement of my expenses:
Automobile mileage, 2810 miles at 8 cts/mile .... $224.80
Motel and meals for 11 days........................ 149.50
Total........................ $374.30
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Anita and Linus:
I have received from President DuBridge a copy of his letter of 27 November to you, and I am writing to express to you my thanks for this additional gift for support of the researchers that we are carrying on.
I enclose a copy of a letter that I have just sent to President DuBridge, about the disposition of the funds.
Those aspects of our program in mental disease that deal with immunological problems have been held up because we had not succeeded in obtaining funds for equipping the laboratories in the Norman W. Church building that were designed for this work. Now it seems that we can obtain a grant from the Public Health Service, on a matching basis, and I have accordingly allocated $20,000 of the money to this use. I think that it may well be that some kinds of mental disease have an immunological cause-that is, that some people may manufacture antibodies against brain proteins, causing an allergic reaction that leads to mental manifestations. I am hoping that we can obtain some evidence about this hypothesis.
You may be interested in some work that we plan to do on aging. A short while ago, while I was thinking about the possibility of getting some information about the mechanisms of protein synthesis that operate in the human body and the fact that they might not operate perfectly, and that some factory reject protein molecules might be manufactured along with the well made ones, it occurred to me that these factory reject molecules might in some cases be sticky, and that they might clamp onto reticular proteins, cell membranes, etc., in such a way as to stay in the body permanently, and ultimately to interfere with normal physiological activity. We have planned some experiments to test this hypothesis of aging, and I hope that within a year we shall have some direct experimental information as to whether the remishanism is significant or not.
We are looking forward very much to seeing you and the children later this month. Peter and his wife and baby plan to arrive about 15 December. Crellin and his wife also will arrive about 15 December. It will be fun to have such a full house. Also, we are hoping that everybody can come up to our ranch for a few days.
Much love from
Daddy
