Dr. J. Lewin
Centre National de Transfusion Sanguine
6, Rue Alexandre-Cabanel
Paris XV, France
Dear Dr. Lewin:
Four months have gone by since your letter of 30 March reached me, and nearly four months since I last wrote to you, on 16 April.
I am accordingly writing again, to find out whether you have been granted leave of absence from your position in Paris, that will permit you to spend a year in Pasadena with Professor Corey and me.
If you have any questions to ask about the appointment offered you in my letter of 8 March 1956, please let me know.
I may say that we have made considerable progress in our preliminary attack on the problem of determining the structure of crystalline globular proteins and we feel sure that to have you in our laboratory would aid significantly in the work.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Bill:
I am writing because I have checked up on the book "The Structural Chemistry of Proteins," by H. D. Springall, Butterworth's Scientific Publications, London, 1954.
The book is 376 pages. As I said, I think that it would be an excellent textbook for an advanced course on the chemistry of proteins.
However, I see after the title page a statement, "U.S.A. edition published by Academic Press, Inc., Publishers, 125 East 23rd Street, New York 10, New York." I judge that this means that there is an American edition.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:LL

14 August 1956
Dr. Linus Pauling, Jr.
Queens Hospital
Honolulu, Hawaii
Dear Linus:
I thank you for sending me the letter from Dr. Jacques M. May, of the League for Emotionally Disturbed Children.
After thinking about the matter, I wrote to Dr. May, saying that I have decided that I should not accept the invitation. A copy of my letter is enclosed.
Also, you may note that I mentioned that he might have had you in mind, rather than me.
I do not recognize the names on the letterhead. I had thought that I might ask Dr. Tarjan, of Pacific State Hospital nearby, what he knows about this organization.
Mama and I have been getting along well. We spent several days last week driving to Berkeley and San Francisco and back. We went primarily to attend a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation, which is a foundation for support of work on rheumatic diseases. The Chairman of the Advisory Committee is a friend of yours, Walter Bauer, of MGH. He said to give you his regards. Carl Cori is also a member of the board, and the meeting was held in Berkeley because his wife, Gerti, is pretty ill, and Carl did not want to leave. He is spending two months lecturing in Berkeley.
Crellin had four wisdom teeth removed-they had not yet broken through-on Monday, and he is still not in very good shape. He put in six weeks working in the laboratory, as assistant to Professor Herbert Harned, who has now gone back to Yale. Crellin is now going to continue making drawings for the new edition of "The Nature of the Chemical Bond." Perhaps he has begun doing a little work on the drawings today.
I suppose that you know that Linda has been sick. She has been in a clinic-a sort of hospital-in Florence for about three weeks now, with virus pneumonia. She seems to be getting along well. We have asked her to fly home when she is able to come, so she may be with us within another month.
I wish that I could talk to you about our program of research on mental deficiency. I have a couple of men at work on the project now, Dr. Rhinesmith and Dr. Allen. Dr. Allen-David W. Allen-is a young M.D. from MGH. I have not remembered to ask whether he knows you. I judge that he got his M.D. about three years ago-I could look in the records to find out. I think that he is going to return to MGH.
I am especially busy this summer, after our return from Italy, because we have made some big changes in our curriculum, and also have appointed four new professorial staff members in chemistry and chemical engineering. Also, we are slowly getting moved into Church Laboratory. I expect to move into my office next month. We are still handicapped by difficulty in outfitting the laboratory. The Public Health Service now has money that can be used for new construction, on a matching basis. I think that we may be able to get some of this money, although there is question as to whether the provision of furnishings-chemical desks, etc.-constitutes new construction.
Much love to Anita and the children.
Love from Daddy,
Linus Pauling:LL

Dr. Ralph W. G. Wyckoff
Laboratory of Physical Biology
National Institutes of Health
Bethesda 14, Maryland
Dear Ralph:
I am glad to have your letter of 1 August about the early days of x-ray work.
I have a letter from Burdick giving rather detailed information about his work on chalcopyrite in Pasadena, with Ellis, but the letter is filed away somewhere, and my secretary, Mrs. Wulf, is on her vacation. I think that it was during 1916, and that Fred Henson built the spectrometer.
I have now telephoned Fred Henson, who is still running his business in East Pasadena, and have asked him about it. He said that he took the job as instrument maker with the Chemistry Department in March 1917, and that the first work that he did was to build the Bragg spectrometer. He said that Burdick, Ellis, and Dickinson were all here, and that they all worked with it as soon as it was completed. I remember that it was here, but tucked away somewhere when I arrived in 1922. Then it was put into operation again in 1924, and Stuart Bates, I think, did a little work with it - I am not sure about it. It probably has been lost by now.
Also, I notice that Dickinson's first two papers describe work done with the spectrometer. The first paper is that of 1920, on wulfenite and scheelite, and the second, published in 1921 by Dickinson and Goodhugh, is on sodium chlorate and sodium bromate.
I am interested by your statement that you will be retiring from the National Institutes of Health pretty soon. Do you mean that you may retire as soon as a year from now? I agree that you should continue with your electron microscopy for a good number of years yet - you have done such fine work in this field (as well as in others), that it would be a shame for you to stop now; but perhaps you could work more effectively in a university.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:LL

NOTES TO MYSELF – LP
Prof. Haagen-Smit told me that he is working on the removal of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from the stack gases for the power plants of, I believe, Southern California Edison. He said that the substances could be removed from the flue gases by use of charcoal, which could pick up nearly half its weight, before having to be regenerated, which can be done with steam. He said that the amount of each substance in the flue gas is about 500 parts per million, which corresponds to about 40 tons per day of sulfur dioxide and the same amount of nitrogen dioxide. There are about fifteen plants in the state belonging to this company, I believe, and accordingly about 600 tons of each substance might be removed each day.
I believe that he said that under conditions of high-temperature combustion as much as 5000 parts per million of nitrogen oxides may be formed. He said that the amount fixed by automobile engines under cruising conditions is about 5000 parts per million, that is about ½ percent. This is very good fixation of nitrogen, inasmuch as commercial nitrogen fixation plants fix only about 2 percent.
He said that the problem is essentially a financial one – can a method be found to remove the substances from the stack gases at a reasonably low cost. It is my impression that the market for sulfuric acid and nitric acid, and also, as Haagen-Smit pointed out, for ammonium sulfate for fertilizer, is great enought in California to permit all of the substances to be sold.
He mentioned that refineries remove hydrocarbons form flue gases by a continuous process, in which particles of carbon drop form the top of the stack around plate after plate to the bottom and are then removed, and treated to be introduced again at the top of the stack.
It is 95° in Los Angeles today, at 1 p.m. – the hottest 23 August since 1886. The smog is pretty bad; even in my office the Crellin Laboratory it causes my eyes to smart.

Wednesday
Dear Linus and Anita:
All sorts of exciting things are happening. Mom and Pop have bought a cattleranch sort of on highway one-some 20 miles north of San Simeon. 160 acres of land, circa two-thirds of a mile of beach, two horses, a little shack and a barn. The country is really gorgeous, rugged, wild, lots of deer, birds, seals, sea otters, flowers, etc. Just the sort of place that Mama loves. The little shack is a two-room affair, with a wood stove, and some running water (cold). There is butane, but no electricity, no hot water. The beach is all lovely rocks, I fear unsuitable for swimming. The beach is down a cliff below the land, at its lowest point is twenty feet high.
Lucy and I drove up in the Porsche a couple of days ago to take Peter's letter up to Mom and Pop, a sort of dull drive, except for highway one itself.
I gave Lucy a ring a couple of days ago-a blue-grey sapphire in a rather modern white gold mount. I am not sure that Mom and Pop really approve, but they seemed pleased, so I guess everything is alright.
I'll send some photographs of the place on highway one, of Lucy, and ring, etc. sometime.
A few months ago my Stephen's speaker crapped out; they finally got around to fixing it. I hope it works alright new, the guarantee is almost shot.
Love
Crellin

29 August 1956
Dear Parents,
Thank you for your letters of the 24th and 25th and for the cheques. I shall keep them uncashed for the present. Perhaps I should eucash the $800 as the bank may wish to collect it
and our departure may be delayed.
Jack Dunitz and I have a plan and we are working on it. It will involve being a research
student in inorganic chemistry under the supervision of Professor R.S. Nyholm of University
college doing structured work of all sorts on transition metal complexes. He has a man working
on Rhenium and now has a little [tech...?]. It would require doing other experiments than pure
difraction work, for instance measuring the paramagnetic susceptibility, but we would have a
major emphasis on x-ray work, to be done we hope with Jack Dunitz in the Royal Institution.
There are a number of snags though Hack, Nyholm and I are in favour of the place. Ingold is
chairman of the department and I do not know his attitude. The there is University College and
the university of London. Finally, for the plan to work there is Bragg; he will not be the most
serious snag.
I do not know what Katie Lonsdale would say. I have not yet seen Bernal; perhaps I can
go on Friday. I think the Nyholm plan is better. I wish at this point to do some honest to god
structure work, and preferably on the most interesting metals. There is a program on [?]
compounds which react with O2, but a convenient crystal compound is not at hand, and in the
year it is being prepared, I wish to get the experimental work completer.
I have been in Cambridge, taking the third projection of HgIyd myoglobin, and now can
check completely the method. If all goes well, I shall quit myoglobin there.
I have purchased you amplifier and shall send it in Linda's trunk. I have her completely
packed except for the books. I got a wholesale price for the amplifier through a friend. I have
tried it; it should do quite well. It is a RCA Great Britain Limited product.
Julia registered the squirt. His name is Peter Andrew Thomas, to be called Thomas
though in England Andrew is the favourite. The Peter is arch vanity on my part, having been
overcome with his beauty upon first sighting him. They are both well. Julia should be home on
Friday. I am having great difficulty getting him circumcised. They bloody well will not do it.
I am pleased you are buying this ranch. It sounds lovely. Does it make any money or is
it just beautiful?
You will note his initials are P.A.T. Pauling, Eng. And I suppose he will be called Pat.
I do not know how long the delay in discovering whether I can get in will be. It probably
will be a mater of guessing probabilities until October, which is rather sad.
Photographers are being prepared.
I am afraid Julia will be rather disappointed if we do not come to California, though she
will wait.
The Speakman book is being published this month, and I shall send it off. I sent the PEP
book at least a month ago. I shall send another air mail if you wish.
Much love,
(XXXOOO)10 Peter
