  Dear Linus:

  I thank you for sending me the letter from Dr. Jacques M. May, of the League for Emotionally Disturbed Children.

  After thinking about the matter, I wrote to Dr. May, saying that I have decided that I should not accept the invitation. A copy of my letter is enclosed.

  Also, you may note that I mentioned that he might have had you in mind, rather than me.

  I do not recognize the names on the letterhead. I had thought that I might ask Dr. Tarjan, of Pacific State Hospital nearby, what he knows about this organization.

  Mama and I have been getting along well. We spent several days last week driving to Berkeley and San Francisco and back. We went primarily to attend a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation, which is a foundation for support of work on rheumatic diseases. The Chairman of the Advisory Committee is a friend of yours, Walter Bauer, of MGH. He said to give you his regards. Carl Cori is also a member of the board, and the meeting was held in Berkeley because his wife, Gerti, is pretty ill, and Carl did not want to leave. He is spending two months lecturing in Berkeley.

  Crellin had four wisdom teeth removed-they had not yet broken through-on Monday, and he is still not in very good shape. He put in six weeks working in the laboratory, as assistant to Professor Herbert Harned, who has now gone back to Yale. Crellin is now going to continue making drawings for the new edition of "The Nature of the Chemical Bond." Perhaps he has begun doing a little work on the drawings today.

  I suppose that you know that Linda has been sick. She has been in a clinic-a sort of hospital-in Florence for about three weeks now, with virus pneumonia. She seems to be getting along well. We have asked her to fly home when she is able to come, so she may be with us within another month.

  I wish that I could talk to you about our program of research on mental deficiency. I have a couple of men at work on the project now, Dr. Rhinesmith and Dr. Allen. Dr. Allen-David W. Allen-is a young M.D. from MGH. I have not remembered to ask whether he knows you. I judge that he got his M.D. about three years ago-I could look in the records to find out. I think that he is going to return to MGH.

  I am especially busy this summer, after our return from Italy, because we have made some big changes in our curriculum, and also have appointed four new professorial staff members in chemistry and chemical engineering. Also, we are slowly getting moved into Church Laboratory. I expect to move into my office next month. We are still handicapped by difficulty in outfitting the laboratory. The Public Health Service now has money that can be used for new construction, on a matching basis. I think that we may be able to get some of this money, although there is question as to whether the provision of furnishings-chemical desks, etc.-constitutes new construction.
