  Dear Henry

  I returned form Italy yesterday, but by the polar route, not passing through New York.

  I hope that you had a good time in Pasadena.

  As to the matter of the preparation of fresh water from sea water, I have not tried to keep up with developments in this field. I know that a good bit of work is being done on the problem. The method of ionic transfer through thin barriers of exchange resins has, I think, shown considerable promise. Electric power is needed for this method, as, indeed, for most of the others. The Von Kleinschmidt method of distillation by compression of the vapor, which is used in plants built by A. D. Little Company in Boston, may turn out to be as good as any. I think that the estimate of 5 cents per ton, for a very large installation, may be a reasonable one now – this is an estimate made 10 years ago, about what might be expected from the use of atomic power. At the present time fresh water costing 5 cents per ton at sea level is expensive.

  We had a fine time in Italy, but I am glad to be home again. I am planning to work on revising a couple of my books, and in addition we have two new research projects that will require much attention from me.
