Monday evening (May 7, 56)
Dear Mom:
I probably will have telephoned you before you get this, but I undoubtably [sic] will forget something, so will write anyway. I have quite a bit to say.
Mikado was last weekend, final performance last night. It was just wonderful. Excellent reviews in the papers, on Saturday evening they packed 800 people in Botsford, and still had to turn about 100 away. It was a lot of fun, well worth the two months of hard work. I, unfortunately, have come down with a cold, which I babied all weekend, so that I could sing. I spent the whole weekend in bed, except to go to performances, and the cast party last night, and I spent today in bed.
Do you remember when we talked to young Richard Morgan about Reed? Well, I'm sure that you will be pleased to learn that he was here last weekend, and that he has been awarded a Baker scholarship, which is full tuition, room and board for the full four years. I was very pleased that he got the scholarship, as I am sure that he deserves it.
David Wailes wrote me a few days ago that he and this girl Adrienne are going to be married this June. Well, I do not feel that this is the wisest thing for him to do, but I am not going to say anything, and I certainly hope that they will be happy. They have asked me to usher at their wedding, and I unhesitatingly accepted. I cannot decide what to get them for a gift, I feel that David, at any rate, is close enough friend that I ought to get them something rather nice, perhaps a glass cream and sugar set. What do you think?
Lucy and I are getting along rather well. [...]
We are driving down with a girl named Kit Crosby in her 1954 Chevrolet station wagon, probably leave here sometime on Saturday, 2 June. And should, therefore, arrive name sometime on Sunday, the Third. We may show up in the middle of the night, so you might warn whoever is in the house that if they hear someone around then it is only me. Kit wants to make a relatively quick trip, but doesn't want to drive too fast, so don't worry about that. Her car is in good condition, I have driven it a bit, and I am sure that it is safe. I will probably do the brunt of the driving, as usual.
What sort of arrangements do you plan to make with me and the Harneds? Especially financial. Also what about having dinner guests, both male and female. Do the Harneds mind my drinking beer? Please let me know about these matters, if you want leave a letter at home, so that I know what you have told them about how to take care of me.
My gramophone doesn't work any too well. I may purchase some equipment when I get home, and use it on your system during the summer. What do you plan to do about an amplifier. I am going to see if I can scrape up one for the summer, borrow it, or something. What about Peter's stuff in the garage? Do you think I could rationalize selling selected pieces, and then reinvesting in modern hi-fidelity equipment?
Also, I am going to wait until after my birthday, then may ask Linus to purchase me a Volkswagen, or MG, or something. However, I want to make sure that this is amenable to you before I do it.
I have somewhat decided not to become a chemist. However, I am unable to decide what to do. I think that next year I will take a good number of liberal arts courses, and see how I feel then. Perhaps it is a mistake, I don't know, anyway I don't have to decide what I am going to take until September.
I was looking through the art studio the other day with Lucy, and I came across a bust that looked quite familiar, so I asked Manuel, the art instructor, who the model was, and sure enough, 'twas my sister. I am thinking of trying to get hold of it. It hasn't been finished, and I don't know what they plan to do with it, but I think it is worth getting hold of.
Well, enough. Love and Kisses,
Crellin

Dear Peter:
I enclose a letter offering you appointment as Research Assistant in Chemistry during the coming year. The salary, %4500. per year, is our customary salary to a man who has just received his Ph.D. degree, and has been offered appointment as Research Fellow in Chemistry. I think that your experience during four years of work after the bachelor's degree justifies your appointment with this salary. In general we give the title Research Assistant in Chemistry to people who have not received the Ph.D. degree, although there have been some exceptions made. For example, we have a man with a doctor's degree here now as Research Assistant in Chemistry.
Howard Dintzis has accepted the appointment here. Professor Corey and I had given him up, because of his delay in answering, but our funds will stretch enough to cover his salary. He said in his letter that he had been trying to get an appointment that would permit him to make an independent attack on the problem of determining the structure of crystalline globular proteins, but had not succeeded, and that he thought that it might be worth while for him to get more experience, anyway.
I have not told him, nor other people away from Pasadena, what the method of attack is that we have worked out. It should be successful. At any rate, I should be surprised if it were to fail, after several years of effort have been put in on it. It is evident that the job is a hard one.
Mama and I got home last night, about 9 o'clock.
Much love to you and Julia.
Sincerely,
[Linus Pauling]

Mr. Peter J. Pauling
182 Broomwood Road
London, S.W. 11 England
Dear Peter:
I am writing to offer you appointment as Research Assistant in Chemistry, for one year, beginning 1 July 1956 or at a later time during the summer of 1956, with salary at the rate of $4500. per year.
Your duties under this appointment would consist in assisting in a research project on the determination of the structure of crystalline globular proteins by x-ray diffraction techniques. This investigation is related to many problems in biology and medicine. I hope that in the course of the work studies can be made on abnormal protein molecules that are responsible for molecular diseases, such as the hereditary hemolytic anemias and some types of mental deficiency.
The work is supported from several sources, including grants from or contracts with the National Science Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, the Public Health Service of the United States, and the Office of Naval Research.
My colleagues and I feel that the training and experience that you have had in the field of x-ray diffraction of crystalline globular proteins will be valuable in this work, and we are looking forward to having you as a collaborator.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

Dear Dr. Duhl:
I apologize for the delay in answering your letter of 18 April. It arrived in Pasadena just after I had left for Illinois, and I did not see it until my return yesterday.
I have no objection to the statement about my plans made on pages 11 and 12 of your letter, especially since I received a letter about two weeks ago from the Ford Foundation saying that the staff of the Foundation would recommend to the traustees that a grant for support of the work for a five-year period be made to the California Institute of Technology. We are accordingly moving along rapidly in preparing for a moderately intensive series of studies in this field.
I am glad to have the manuscript of your talk. May I
ask you to send a reprint of the paper, when it is published? Would you be able to put me down on a list of people receiving publications of the National Institute of Mental Health? I do not try to read the literature in this field, and I think that if I could get publications from you I would be helped in keeping up with the advance of knowledge.
We have begun an investigation of the amino-acid sequences in the hemoglobin manufactured by phenylketonurics, without any positive results so far.
Sincerely yours,

Praia de Luz
May 11th
Dear Professor and Mrs. Pauling,
We have found our ideal fishing village. It is so wonderful, but not as deserted as we had
planned. The people are very friendly, teasing and curious so we have company for about
twenty hours out of twenty-four.
Peter's foot and nose are burnt, his hair is shoulder length and he has a red beard, very
picturesque. He goes fishing with the local police force while I do the laundry in the stream. I
am not used to such hot sun but enjoy it in small doses. I fry horrible foods in the darkness for
supper and Peter does the washing-up, by scouring with sand, at which I am incompetent.
The caves in Northern Spain were very exciting, and Lisbon very beautiful, but it is
pleasanter to be here by the sea. It is difficult to enjoy looking at cities when it is too hot.
Love,
Julia

Praia de Luz of Logos
Portugal
Dear Mamma and Daddy,
We are having a rather good time. We have stopped travelling for a few days to camp on
the beach of a small fishing village of ~700 people, and it is very hot and rather nice. We swim
often. The people are simple and very friendly; Julia is rapidly learning Portuguese. I hope we
are not spending too much money, but I think it is worth it to have a little holiday and to be in
the sun for a while.
I have some crystals growing in London, but there is a good deal of work still to be done.
We missed the lobster time in the fishing town that catches them, so have not really had
any. It was too bad. We are leaving tomorrow for Spain, Marseille and Stuttgart, c/o the
American Express Co. I hope to travel fairly quickly but it is quite a ways.
Should I send the Porsche to you? I shall ship it from Germany. We shall be in London
to meet you at the airport.
We are sunburned and it is somewhat painful. It is nice though, after years of cloud in
England.
You can write to us, either at Marseille or Stuttgart, I expect, though we shall be in
Marseille before a week, I hope. Perhaps least to Stuttgart. 46, Konig strasse.. [side: American
Express]
Camping is fairly difficult due to the high population densities. Most land is cultivated.
Still we manage. I do not know how Linda is. OK, I suppose.
Much love,
XXXOOO Peter

The rule to which you refer in your letter of 10 May is on page 178 of the first edition of THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND - probably about 184 of the second edition (I don't have a copy at hand), near the end of Chapter 5.
There it is stated that van der Waals radii are 0.75 to 0.83 A greater than the corresponding single-bond covalent radii, probably within limit of reliability equal to the covalent radius plus 0.80 A.
This would be equal to the single-bond distance plus 1.60 A. I am not sure that the rule should be stated as you do, equal to the bond length of a diatomic molecule, because I doubt that the effect of a double bond or a triple bond would be of this sort. Perhaps it would, however.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Linus and Helen:
Your nice note of May 16 was received here to-day forwarded from Berkeley. We have been here all spring serving another term as visiting professor. This is our last week here and we go out to St. Louis next week for preliminary house-hunting. After that two weeks in Corning and then to Madison where I am professing quantum mechanics in the summer session to August 18, then a couple more weeks in Corning and really get to St. Louis about Labor Day. I put in all this detail so you will be sure to look us up if your summer travels cross any of this trail.
We are of course delighted to have a really good base of operations and hope that we can persuade you to visit us there when we are established.
As to whether things are getting more rational, I believe they are in the population as a whole, but I see no signs of improvement in the conduct of the Eisenhower administration. Eyring tried to help me by intervening with Senator Watkins and got a brushoff which involved a new charge against me. He writes, "The best picture that I can get is that no one even suggests you are disloyal but some argue that you are too easy going." At the end of April I saw Senator Knowland and asked his help. He took it up with the offending Secretary of the Navy and received a brushoff. So we have a long way to go before these fellows begin to act decently. Our only hope is to arrange matters so that what they say and do does not matter.
Paul is at 116 Cromwell Road, London S.W.7 working at Blackett's lab and will be at Pic du Midi in June then at Princeton next year.
With lots of love,
Ed Condon

Dear Crellie:
Professor Herbert Harned is here now, and has begun work on the preparation of the subchloride of columbium, Cb6Cl14. He thinks, too, that he may try to prepare the corresponding bromide.
I have given you appointment as Assistant in Chemistry, for a month or six weeks this summer, possibly until Professor Harned leaves, about the first of August. You are to work forty hours per week, and be paid at the rate of $1.50 per hour.
Your duties under this appointment are to assist Professor Harned in the preparation of the substances. I have told Professor Harned that you would help him with whatever work needs to be done in the laboratory. He has suggested that he might want you to do a certain amount of glassblowing. He might ask you to spend a small amount of time reading the literature, but I think that most of your time would be spent in carrying out the inorganic preparations, under his supervision.
Professor Harned is a bit worried about the danger of working with bromine - that is, he is worried on your account. I think that I should mention to you that bromine is a dangerous substance. Chlorine also is dangerous, but not so dangerous as bromine. A lungful of bromine vapor can easily cause death. Accordingly, while you are working with Professor Harned you must pay careful attention to the advice that he gives you about safety measures. Of course, it is good to remember to be careful in all chemical work. We had a boy go to the hospital a month ago, because of cuts that he received from an explosion in a flask in which he was carrying on a reaction. Fortunately, he was wearing glasses. The glasses were broken, and one of the cuts was on the eyeball, but only a small one. It is a good idea to wear goggles or a safety shield over the face, whenever there is any danger of an explosion.
Professor Harned will, I think, want to tell you stories about his experiences, perhaps even when he was manufacturing Cb6Cl14 as a graduate student, during the period 1910 to 1913. I think that you may get tired of listening to these stories, especially if he tells them to you more than once, but you should consider it part of your job to listen to them, without showing that you are bored. This situation is one that you are apt to run into many times during your life.
I think that Professor Harned is an understanding sort of man, and that you should be frank with him about any matter that comes up. If you do not understand anything that he has asked you to do, be sure to tell him, and have him go over the matter until you do understand. If you have some ideas as to what might be tried, feel free to tell him, and see what he says.
Mamma and I are sorry not to see you before we get off for Italy. We are looking forward to seeing you when we get back, about 4 July. It may be that you should plan to start work again on the drawings for the Nature of the Chemical Bond at that time, but on the other hand, it may take me a couple of weeks to handle the accumulated work, so that there may be a delay before you change from your work with Professor Harned to the drawing work. Moreover, the synthesis of the columbium chloride compound is a very important part of the program that we have mapped out for the determination of the structure of proteins, and I feel that this work should have your attention as long as is necessary.
Much love from

Dear Peter:
I have written to Bragg, saying that we are to arrive Friday afternoon, and leave Monday morning, and suggested that we might run up to his place in the country for an hour or two, if that would be the only chance for us to see him and Lady Bragg. Possibly he would still be in the Royal Institution on Friday afternoon, and we could call then. I do not know whether there is to be a Friday Evening lecture that night.
I also mentioned to him that we had offered you a job in our protein structure group, but that I did not know yet whether you would accept it.
The method that we are going to use to determine the structure of proteins - or at least to try - involves an unusual inorganic substance, which has never been synthesized by anybody except Professor Herbert Harned of Yale. Professor Harned is here now, with his wife and one daughter. He is to work for three months on the job of making this compound. Our earlier efforts to synthesize it failed. Crellin is to be his assistant.
Mamma and I are looking forward to seeing you when we arrive in London at 1:15 P.M. (SK 501) on Friday 1 June. If you are not at the airport we shall take the bus into the terminal.
Much love to you and Julia from

24 May 1956
Mr. W. H. Freeman

San Francisco 4, Calif.
Dear Bill:
I have checked up on the matter discussed in your letter of 9 May, namely, the possibility of preparing for publication a chemical thermodynamics based on the Dickinson notes.
There has been in the past some discussion of collaboration with Badger and Bates, and David Shoemaker, on this job.
I have talked with Professor Badger about the matter. He feels that the Dickinson notes provide the best basis that there is for teaching chemical thermodynamics, but that they are not extensive enough to make one independent of some other text. Also, as you know, Professor Bates compiled an extensive set of problems, and Professor Badger has added to this set, in such a way as to correspond pretty well with the material in the Dickinson notes.
The Dickinson notes are, I think, in a way the property of the California Institute of Technology.
Professor Badger and Professor Schomaker have done some work along the direction of extending the notes, but have not made a manuscript suitable for a book. A few years ago David Shoemaker also worked on the job of editing the Dickinson notes.
My feeling is that if David Shoemaker and Badger, possibly also Verner Schomaker, would agree to expand the notes in a satisfactory way, there would result a manuscript well worth publication. I do not think that David Shoemaker should go ahead on his own. Perhaps you would think it worth while to talk with Badger about the matter.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
P.S. We are looking forward to seeing you in July. LP

Professor Arthur J. Hill
Sterling Chemistry Laboratory
Yale University
New Haven, Connecticut
Dear Professor Hill:
I am writing to ask if there is any chance of our making some use of the pyrimidines and pyrimidine derivatives synthesized by Professor Treat B. Johnson.
Professor Robert B. Corey and I have become interested in the problem of the detailed molecular structure of pyrimidines and purines, because of its relation to the problem of the structure of nucleic acids. So far there have been very few satisfactory x-ray studies of crystals of pyrimidines. Only a half dozen pyrimidines have been investigated, and most of the investigations have been carried out in such a way that the atomic positions have not been determined with the accuracy that is possible with modern methods. Corey and I think that we should arrange to have several careful structure determinations made of some interesting pyrimidines.
It is difficult to say which of the substances synthesized by Professor Johnson would be best for this purpose. An important quality is the ease of crystallization of the substances. There is also an element of chance that enters, in that a substance may crystallize with a small unit of structure, or with a very short axis of the unit in one direction, and hence be well suited to x-ray investigation, or it may happen to crystallize with a very large and complicated unit of structure. In general predictions cannot be made about this from the formula.
I have asked Professor Harned whether or not you have a collection of substances synthesized by Professor Johnson. If you have a collection of these substances, I should like to ask if you would be willing to lend the entire collection to us for a few months. We could examine the substances, and probably eliminate about three quarters of them immediately; these could be returned to you without delay. The others might be subjected to preliminary x-ray studies or attempts at crystallization, and then returned to you, as the results of these preliminary studies indicated them to be unsuitable.
Professor Hill Page 2 29/5/56
I may say that if this arrangement could be made, almost all of each sample probably could be returned to you. If one of the samples happens to contain crystals suitable to x-ray investigation, it might be necessary only for us to select one of these crystals, weighing a fraction of a milligram, and use it for the x-ray work. If a substance had to be recrystallized, the recrystallization might be carried out with perhaps 100 mg, and the recrystallized material also could be returned to you, except for a few small crystals used in the x-ray studies.
Our interests in the substances synthesized by Professor Johnson do not overlap those of any other group, except that Cochran in the Cavendish laboratory in Cambridge has been making some studies of this sort, using pyrimidines and purines given to him by Professor Todd.
I hope very much that you have the substances that were synthesized by Professor Johnson, and that you feel that you can lend them to us for this purpose.
We are enjoying the visit of Professor Harned here.
With best regards, I am
Linus Pauling:W
cc: Professor Corey
