Dear Peter:
I enclose a letter offering you appointment as Research Assistant in Chemistry during the coming year. The salary, %4500. per year, is our customary salary to a man who has just received his Ph.D. degree, and has been offered appointment as Research Fellow in Chemistry. I think that your experience during four years of work after the bachelor's degree justifies your appointment with this salary. In general we give the title Research Assistant in Chemistry to people who have not received the Ph.D. degree, although there have been some exceptions made. For example, we have a man with a doctor's degree here now as Research Assistant in Chemistry.
Howard Dintzis has accepted the appointment here. Professor Corey and I had given him up, because of his delay in answering, but our funds will stretch enough to cover his salary. He said in his letter that he had been trying to get an appointment that would permit him to make an independent attack on the problem of determining the structure of crystalline globular proteins, but had not succeeded, and that he thought that it might be worth while for him to get more experience, anyway.
I have not told him, nor other people away from Pasadena, what the method of attack is that we have worked out. It should be successful. At any rate, I should be surprised if it were to fail, after several years of effort have been put in on it. It is evident that the job is a hard one.
Mama and I got home last night, about 9 o'clock.
Much love to you and Julia.
Sincerely,
[Linus Pauling]

Mr. Peter J. Pauling
182 Broomwood Road
London, S.W. 11 England
Dear Peter:
I am writing to offer you appointment as Research Assistant in Chemistry, for one year, beginning 1 July 1956 or at a later time during the summer of 1956, with salary at the rate of $4500. per year.
Your duties under this appointment would consist in assisting in a research project on the determination of the structure of crystalline globular proteins by x-ray diffraction techniques. This investigation is related to many problems in biology and medicine. I hope that in the course of the work studies can be made on abnormal protein molecules that are responsible for molecular diseases, such as the hereditary hemolytic anemias and some types of mental deficiency.
The work is supported from several sources, including grants from or contracts with the National Science Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, the Public Health Service of the United States, and the Office of Naval Research.
My colleagues and I feel that the training and experience that you have had in the field of x-ray diffraction of crystalline globular proteins will be valuable in this work, and we are looking forward to having you as a collaborator.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]
- Letter from Professor Fred T. Wall, William Albert Noyes Laboratory, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Dept., University of Illinois, to LP RE: Thanks LP for speaking as the first George A. Miller Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Illinois. LP's talks were well-received by the members of many fields. Appreciated LP's emphasis on the interrelatedness of the sciences through molecular structure. Delighted to have LP at Illinois as a scientist and as a friend. [Letter from Beatrice Wulf to Fred T.
