Dear Bill:
I have checked up on the matter discussed in your letter of 9 May, namely, the possibility of preparing for publication a chemical thermodynamics based on the Dickinson notes.
There has been in the past some discussion of collaboration with Badger and Bates, and David Shoemaker, on this job.
I have talked with Professor Badger about the matter. He feels that the Dickinson notes provide the best basis that there is for teaching chemical thermodynamics, but that they are not extensive enough to make one independent of some other text. Also, as you know, Professor Bates compiled an extensive set of problems, and Professor Badger has added to this set, in such a way as to correspond pretty well with the material in the Dickinson notes.
The Dickinson notes are, I think, in a way the property of the California Institute of Technology.
Professor Badger and Professor Schomaker have done some work along the direction of extending the notes, but have not made a manuscript suitable for a book. A few years ago David Shoemaker also worked on the job of editing the Dickinson notes.
My feeling is that if David Shoemaker and Badger, possibly also Verner Schomaker, would agree to expand the notes in a satisfactory way, there would result a manuscript well worth publication. I do not think that David Shoemaker should go ahead on his own. Perhaps you would think it worth while to talk with Badger about the matter.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
P.S. We are looking forward to seeing you in July. LP
