Dear Joe:
The rule to which you refer in your letter of 10 May is on page 178 of the first edition of THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND - probably about 184 of the second edition (I don't have a copy at hand), near the end of Chapter 5.
There it is stated that van der Waals radii are 0.75 to 0.83 A greater than the corresponding single-bond covalent radii, probably within limit of reliability equal to the covalent radius plus 0.80 A.
This would be equal to the single-bond distance plus 1.60 A. I am not sure that the rule should be stated as you do, equal to the bond length of a diatomic molecule, because I doubt that the effect of a double bond or a triple bond would be of this sort. Perhaps it would, however.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
