Dear Professor Macdiarmid:
In answer to your letter, I would say that in making the interatomic-distance calculations that you mention, it would be proper to use the same tetrahedral single-bond covalent radius for zinc as in zinc sulfide, namely, 1.31, and in the cobalt complexes to use the octahedral single-bond covalent radius, 1.22 Å.
It seems likely that the amount of partial ionic character is such as to make the central atom essentially electrically neutral, so that no modification of the radius because of the charge should be made.
In the case of the cyanides, there is probably some double-bond character to the bonds. This may lead to a decrease in distance, perhaps by as much as 0.05 Å.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
