- Letter from Dr. Arthur McE. Smith, Humboldt State College, to LP RE: Should not worry about being a nuisance. Believes LP and AHP would find it more enjoyable at their house than the Eureka Inn. The Smiths live five miles north of Arcata on the middle of twenty acres. There is plenty of space, as they recently accommodated a couple with their five children. The cocktail party before the Sigma Xi dinner with be at Smith's house. LP and Smith will have many of the same engagements. Suggests LP reconsider his plan to drive to Arcata due the damage on the Redwood Highway caused by recent flooding. [Letters from LP to Smith January 3, 1956, January 31, 1956] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.6]
- Letter from Esther Everett Lape, American Foundation Studies, to LP RE: An article she wrote which was printed in the New York Times Sunday magazine January 15 promoting basic research in fundamental medicine. Notes the article's relevance to the President's recent State of the Union Message. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Organizational Correspondence (Am - Am)), #10.1]
- Letter from Kozo Shinoda, University of Southern California, to LP RE: Discusses his current research and education and the possibility of his applying for a fellowship. Asks for financial information regarding the fellowship. [Letter from Corey to Shinoda February 1, 1956] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1956), #379.4]
- Letter from LP to Dr. Kenneth J. Palmer, Agricultural Research Service, Western Utilization Research Branch, RE: Pleased to change the date of his visit to February 20. Suggests that he come down to the laboratory at noon, have lunch, and look around for an hour. Would like to leave at 2 PM in order to prepare for his lecture at 4 PM. - Letter from LP to Edwin J. Barth, Chemical and Petroleum Engineer Consultant RE: Expresses interest on the subject of asphalts but explains that Caltech would not be interested in a research project regarding them. [Letters from Barth to LP January 23, 1956, February 21, 1956] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1956), #38.2]
- Letter from LP to Fred T. Wall, William Albert Noyes Laboratory, University of Illinois, RE: Encloses a glossy photo and biographical info. LP's principal research interest at present is the determination of the detailed molecular structure of proteins. Continuing work on chemistry in relation to medicine. Lecture schedule described in Wall's letter is satisfactory. Requests that Wall reserve a room for LP and AHP; an apartment would be better so they could entertain visitors. Gives permission to announce the lectures in Science and other journals and to neighboring institutions. [Letters from Wall to LP January 11, 1956, March 2, 1956] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.11]

27 January 1956
Dear Peter:
I am glad to learn some details about your work on myoglobin.
I am sure that something worth while can be learned from the three projections. Also, I feel sure that the determination of the structure of a crystalline protein will require that the phases of general reflections be determined, permitting a three-dimensional Fourier to be constructed.
I think that I told you that we offered Howard Dintzis a job. I do not know yet whether or not he will accept it. We are planning to determine the structure of a crystalline protein here, in the near future. I don't think that the job can be done by one man in a few years, and I am not sure that Dintzis is interested in collaborating on it.
We shall have to have one or more people who know the techniques of getting good x-ray photographs of crystals of proteins. We hope in a few months to have selected the crystals to be studied. I wish that I could talk with you in detail about our project - I do not want to write about it in detail, because I think that we should test out our ideas before talking about them. Please do not spread the word around. I have written Kendrew that we are planning to attack the problem.
Our rotating anode x-ray tube is standing idle. Sheldon Crane quit his job in 31 December. He has an industrial job that pays much more. I wish that we had somebody who would concentrate his attention on this x-ray tube, and perhaps other instrumental questions connected with protein photography. I think that something really exciting is going to happen here during the next year or two, and instrumentation could be of great value to us.
We had pretty well decided to look forward to having a spectrometer, in the course of time, for collecting three-dimensional protein crystal diffraction data. I agree with you that it would be nice if it were automatic. In the meantime, however, we are going to move forward with use of visually estimated intensities. You did not answer my question about the microphotometer giving integrated intensities to within 2%. I thought, from what Dintzis had said in his letter, that you had such a microphotometer in use in the Cavendish. Do you? How do you get the intensity values from your photographs of myoglobin?
Love from
