- Letter from Dr. Robert B. Corey, Caltech, to Dr. Otto K. Behrens, Director, Biochemical Research Division, The Lilly Research Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company, RE: Requests some crystals of glucagon, preferably in contact with a small quantity of the mother liquor, as well as a portion of the mother liquor in a separate container for use in the manipulation of the crystals. Would like to try to obtain good x-ray diffraction patterns from the crystals. Cannot guarantee any results in advance, but hopes Behrens will still be willing to risk the material. In a postscript, requests a reprint of Behrens' article published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry on the purification and crystallization of glucagon. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (E: Organizational Correspondence. (Ea - Ex)), #111.4]
- Letter from LP [Signed by Beatrice Wulf] to Dr. John Edsall, Biological Laboratories, Harvard University, RE: Has been thinking about Professor Robert B. Corey's suitability for membership in the National Academy of Sciences. Asks if Edsall believes Corey is suitable for membership. Asks if the Biochemistry Section would be willing to participate in a joint nomination with the Chemistry Section. Wonders if Edsall would be willing to assume the responsibility of obtaining signatures. Does not believe that the physical chemists or the organic chemists will support Corey. Believes the best way for him to be elected would be through a joint nomination. - Letter from LP [Signed by MS] to James A. Anderson RE: Came across an article on hexaphenyldigermane in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, which reminded him of germanium organics. Anderson had requested information on germanium organics and LP suggests that he start with that article. Remarks that this subject is not a good one for experimental work by a beginner. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Correspondence), #12.21]
- Letter from LP [Signed in his absence] to Professor J,G. Kirkwood, Sterling Chemistry Laboratory, Yale University, RE: Thanks Kirkwood for sending along the letter from Dr. Carey which was mistakenly sent to Kirkwood. Will write to Lederle Laboratories and express his gratitude for the grant. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (K: Individual Correspondence. (Kennedy - Klein, Morton)), #198.11]
- Letter from LP to Dr. M.S. Sundaram, Embassy of India, RE: Thanks Sundaram for the invitation to have lunch with him on October 11. Unfortunately, Sundaram's letter did not reach Pasadena until LP had left. Moreover, when LP arrived Washington, he became ill with a cold, and had to stay in bed for a while. Has talked again with Dr. Richard Lippman about the matter of he and Dr. Tom Perry carrying on teaching and research in medicine in India. Lippman hoped to talk with Sundaram again about the possibility. LP feels that appointments in India for Lippman and Perry, which need not carry high salaries, should be seriously considered. [Letter from Sundaram to LP October 7, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
- Letter from LP to Dr. Richard B. Belser, George Institute of Technology, Engineering Experiment Station, RE: Thanks Belser for the report on the structure and aging of thin bimetal films and for the sample of aluminum alloy showing the purple-gold aluminum compound formed by solid state diffusion. Interested to hear about the technique of forming alloys by the evaporation or sputtering of one element onto another. Passing Belser's report on to Bergman so he can try the method. - Letter from LP to Frank R. Archibald. [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #366, Folder #2]
1 December 1955
Professor Frank R. Archibald
18 Irving Street
Melrose, Massachusetts
Dear Professor Archibald:
Thank you for your letter and for the copy of LUBRICATION ENGINEERING containing your article on Professor Sommerfeld.
It looks very good to me. Also, I shall be glad to see a copy of Ernst Sommerfeld's account of his father. I knew Ernst thirty years ago, and I saw him two years ago. I also saw Frau Sommerfeld, who died recently. One of the two (I don't remember which one) said that when Professor Sommerfeld was brought home after the traffic accident he said "Now I shan't be able to finish my book" - the last volume of the series of texts on theoretical physics that he was writing.
It was a great privilege for me to have been able to work with Sommerfeld. He was an extraordinarily able teacher, and I got a great deal out of his lectures.
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by Linus Pauling

- Letter from LP to Professor Arthur C. Cope, Chemistry Dept., MIT, RE: As requested, LP gives his opinion on Dr. Shoemaker's qualifications. Regards him as one of the most able young physical chemists in the country. His work on the determination of the structure of extremely complex alloys is extraordinarily difficult. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Individual Correspondence. (Shaw - Shriver)), #363.3]
- Letter from Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP, to Dr. Dael Wolfle, Editor, Science, RE: Encloses a sketch about Hugo Theorell written by LP for Wolfle's consideration for publication in Science. [Filed under LP Manuscripts of Articles: 1955a.10]
- Letter from Dr. George Tarjan, Pacific State Hospital to LP RE: Tells LP that Dr. Wright will make the arrangements for the blood samples and the abstracts of information. [Letter from LP to Tarjan November 30, 1955] [Filed under LP Science: Orthomolecular Medicine and Mental Health: Materials re: Ford Foundation grants for the study of mental disorders, 1955-1966: Box #11.089, Folder #89.2]
- Letter from Dr. Robert R. Citron to LP RE: Pleased to note the change in the attitude of the State Department's Passport Division in regard to the issuance of visas and other traveling privileges to American and foreign scientists. Due to financial circumstances, Citron has accepted employment as a Staff Physician at the Stockton (California) State Hospital. Prior to that, he was engaged in cancer research and it still very much interested in the cancer problem. Describes his research in detail. Wonders if anyone at Caltech might want to pursue the line of thinking which directed his own research. [Letter from LP to Citron February 8, 1956] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (C: Individual Correspondence. (Citron - Conant), #66.1]
- Letter from Gordon H. Bixler, Associate Editor, Chemical and Engineering News, to LP RE: Requests LP's view on the progress in the chemical community to be published, along with other scientists' views, in the first 1956 issue of Chemical and Engineering News. Encloses specific questions for LP to address. Deadline for response is December 8. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (C: Organizational Correspondence. (Ch - Ci)), #70.3]
- Letter from Harry G. Day, Chairman, Department of Chemistry, Indiana University, to LP, RE: Encloses a copy of their 1954-55 bibliography of scientific publications and an announcement of opportunities for graduate work in the Department of Chemistry. Also emphasizes the open position in chemistry at the Fort Wayne Extension Center. [Filed under LP Science: (American Chemical Society: Correspondence, 1950-1964)
- Letter from LP [Signed by Beatrice Wulf] to Dr. Cornelius H. Siemens, Humboldt State College, RE: Looks forward to speaking at Humboldt on February 17. LP and AHP will drive from Berkeley to Eureka on the afternoon of February 16 and will plan to go to the Eureka Inn. LP's secretary will send a glossy print and some biographical info. [Letter from Cornelius H. Siemens to LP October 11, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.6]
- Letter from LP [Signed by Beatrice Wulf] to Dr. Gerald Laxer, Director of Science and Technology, The Wool Bureau, Inc., RE: LP and Dr. Robert B. Corey have decided that it would not be wise for them to request a grant from The Wool Bureau to support work on the structure of wool. At the present, time they are deeply engrossed in other problems and would not be able to give proper attention to the work on wool. [Memo from Corey to LP November 23, 1955, Letter from Laxer to LP December 5, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (L: Correspondence, 1955-1960), #231.1]
- Letter from LP [Signed by Beatrice Wulf] to Professor Eiji Suito, Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University, Japan, RE: Thanks Suito for his letter and for the reprints. Enjoyed visiting Osaka. [Letter from Suito to LP March 3, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
- Letter from LP [Signed by MS] to Dr. A.C. Allison, Cell Metabolism Research Unit, Biochemistry Dept., University of Oxford RE: Addresses the issue of a joint publication (by Allison's lab and his own lab) of the sickle cell transformation research. Concludes that it would not be justified for his lab to receive credit since the vast majority of research was conducted at Allison's lab. Might simply acknowledge his lab in the paper. If Allison collaborated with another researcher at Caltech, then LP suggests the paper be submitted as a joint publication from Oxford and Pasadena. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences charges nonmembers a high fee for publication. At Allison's request, LP clarifies a statement made about Perutz's work and concludes that he himself was confused. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Correspondence), #12.21]
- Letter from LP to Dr. John E. Tyler, Associate Research Physicist, Visibility Laboratory, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, RE: Needs some red-absorption dye that is water soluble, can be contained in transparent dry film, and will exhibit a single sharp absorption band at 700 mu throughout the visible region. Professor Fox suggested copper salts of biliverdin. Fox said that LP would have the most recent information along these lines. [Letter from LP to Tyler December 6, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1936-1955), #410.20]
- Letter from LP to Hans-Joachim Bruchner RE: Looking forward to hearing from Bruchner again on progress with nitrogen calculation. Report of March 30, 1955 is interesting and it seems that the results give support to the high value of the heat of dissociation of the nitrogen molecule. Meanwhile, several journal articles have been published which also support this high value, as well as the high value of the heat of sublimation of graphite. LP has reached the conclusion that he too will use the high value in his revision of the Nature of the Chemical Bond. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1955-1957), #38.1]
- Letter from LP to Kosuke Ohki, Research Institute of Science and Industry, Kyusha University, RE: Has read Ohki's manuscript on an electronic theory of nerve conduction. Seems that Ohki's ideas are rather speculative, and it is difficult to assess their value. Wonders if it is worthwhile to publish speculations of this sort. Speculations are only valuable if they suggest a new way of experimental attack on a problem or if they simplify a theoretical problem so as to make it easier for students to learn. LP enjoyed his stay in Japan last spring. Sorry that he was not able to visit Kyusha University. [Letter from Ohki to LP February 22, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (O: Correspondence, 1937-1965), #300.17]
- Letter from LP to Professor Kenneth S. Pitzer, Chemistry Dept., University of California, Berkeley, RE: Has decided not to sign the oath that Pitzer sent. Hopes this will not interfere with his appointment in such a way as to prevent him giving the lectures. Plans to come to Berkeley January 3-13 and February 13-24. Has agreed to speak before the Biology Colloquium on January 6 and to be in Arcata on February 17. Suggests that during his first period, he might give lectures on molecular structure, such as two talks on metallic valence and the structure of metals and intermetallic compounds, and one or two on the structure of proteins. During the second period, his lectures might deal with molecular structure in relation to biological specificity, such as a talk on abnormal hemoglobin molecules, one on the structure of antibodies and the nature of serological reactions, and one on molecular structure and biological specificity. [Letters from Pitzer to LP October 12, 1955, December 9, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.3]
- Letter from Sir Alexander Todd, University Chemical Laboratory, Cambridge, to LP RE: Thanks LP for his letter and for giving his opinion of the work being done by Kendrew and Perutz. - Letter from Dr. George F. Wright, Chemistry Dept., University of Toronto, Canada, to LP RE: Pleased by the outcome of LP's passport difficulties, as recorded in the last News Edition. Would like to see this record publicized in journals of circulation more widespread than those of the scientific profession. Admires LP in his effort to see this issue through. [Letter from LP to Wright December 13, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #444.3]
- Letter from Dr. Paul N. Schatz to LP RE: Expecting to be discharged from the Army during the coming summer. Looking for an academic position to allow him to do both research and teaching. Requests that LP inform him of any open positions in the country. Schatz's experience has been in infrared spectroscopy and quantum mechanics. Describes his background. Congratulates LP on testifying before the Hennings Committee regarding the passport situation. - Letter from Professor K.T. Rogers, Zoology Dept., Oberlin College, to LP RE: Pleased that LP has accepted the invitation to deliver the Meade Swing lectures at Oberlin in October 1956. Suggests that LP could publish his Princeton lectures with a statement they were also given under the Meade Swing auspices. That would satisfy the publication requirement for the extra stipend. Suggests that LP tentatively name three or four days in the third week of October for the lectures. Dean Chauncey D. Leake
The Ohio State University
Columbus 10, Ohio
Dear Chauncey:
Thank you very much for your letter of 22 November. I myself am feeling somewhat encouraged about the situation with respect to the rights of individuals; I think that it is fine that Senator Hennings should have got a subcommittee to work on the problem.
Ava Helen and I are pleased that you and Mrs. Leake are enjoying life in Columbus. We have been having a good time, but have been perhaps a bit too busy during recent months. We are having a vacation for a few days (not entirely vacation - we are driving to Berkeley for a meeting with a Public Health Service Committee, and we probably shall drive back along the Coast Highway, by Carmel).
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:ms
- Letter from LP to Dr. Edward L. Haenisch, Committee on Institutes and Conferences, A.C.S., Wabash College, RE: Regrets that he cannot accept the invitation to devote time during second semester to the Visiting Scientists program that Haenisch recently developed. Will not be able to participate in the program during fall semester of 1956-57 either. Suggests that he visit three of the Pacific Coast colleges during fall term: Reed College, Pomona College, and Redlands College. Since Occidental College is so close to Caltech, there is no reason why he should not give a talk there once in a while. - Letter from LP to Dr. John R. Pierce, Bell Telephone Laboratories, RE: Missed the two stories that Pierce published two or three years ago in Fantasy and Science Fiction because he only receives the magazine intermittently. Wishes that Pierce would stop by Caltech for a visit; would like to discuss his plans for carrying out biochemical work on the problem of mental deficiency. [Letter from Pierce to LP November 17, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (P: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #313.3]
- Letter from LP to Edwin S. Spencer, RE: Has not written anything about a philosophy of life; has not had much interest in what is ordinarily called philosophy. Was asked if he felt that he could be described as a scientific rationalist and he answered that he thought that he could. After a speech at Pomona, philosophy students labeled him as a materialist. Does not really know what these words mean. Believes that all problems can be attacked by logical thought and that one should not allow mysticism or dogma to prevent him from thinking about the world. [Letter from Edwin S. Spencer to LP January 29, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
- Letter from LP to Professor Bruce A. Benson, Physics Dept., Amherst College, RE: April 25-28 would be satisfactory for LP's visit to Amherst. The honorarium is satisfactory. [Letters from Benson to LP October 28, 1955, December 6, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.19]
- Letter from LP to Richard Wistar, Jr., President, Channing Club, Pomona College, RE: Enjoyed speaking with Wistar and his fellow club members last week. Wistar should not worry about the slides. - Letter from Peter Pauling to LP RE: Peter writes to update his father on his research and to recommend Dintzis as a possible Caltech chemistry hire. [Filed under LP Biographical: Box #5.042, Folder #42.2]
5 December 1955
Dear Daddy,
I have written Stanley about coming but he has not yet had time to reply.
You might think a little about this man Howard Dintzis. He of course wants to settle
down & get to work and wants a permanent job some where, but there does not seem to be much
around. He does not want to come too much to Pasadena he has been told stories on how
difficult it is to get equipment made etc. for more or his new stuff, but Pasadena is ahead of
everyone else in the United States in the e-ray Rotating Anode business. Dintzis is very good at
thinking of stuff and trying it. If you were to consider working on crystalline proteins he would
be a good start.
Several of the boys are trying to begin building Rotating anode tubes. Joe Krant, Don
Caspar at Yale, Alex, and this man Dintzis if he gets a place to go. If they get something
adequately designed, you night be interested in getting one. These things won't happen for a
while yet.
Much love,
Peter
- Letter from Professor Ralph L. Shriner, Chemistry Dept., State University of Iowa, to LP RE: Has heard that LP will be delivering the Coover Lecture at Iowa State College next spring. Invites LP to lecture before the Chemistry Colloquium at the State University of Iowa in conjunction with his trip to Iowa State College. Would be glad to cover travel expenses from Ames to Iowa City. Dr. George Glockler is no longer at Iowa as he has accepted a position with the Office of Ordnance Research. - Letter from LP to Dr. L.J. Rather, Stanford University School of Medicine, RE: LP does not underestimate the importance of words; agrees with Lavoisier about this matter. However, does think it is dangerous to become too concerned about words, especially as used by thinkers in the early intellectual history of the world. Many facts and ideas have been discovered since the time of the early philosophers, and these change the nature of the world greatly. [Letter from Rather to LP November 29, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (R: Correspondence, 1955-1959), #341.1]

- Letter from Professor Otto M. Smith, Research Foundation, Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, to LP RE: Much has been said about the financial and professional rewards for research professors as compared to those for teaching professors. Asks specific questions about policies that Caltech has for rewarding professors for outstanding accomplishments as teachers. Wonders if teaching professors receive salaries equal to those of research professors. Wonders if teachers are employed during the summer. Wonders if teachers have opportunities for advancement comparable to those for researchers. Wonders if a "distinguished professor" title is bestowed for excellent teaching. Wonders if the caliber of the staff teaching lower division classes is equivalent to that of the staff teaching upper division classes. This letter has been sent out to many institutions. - Letter from Dr. John T. Edsall, Biological Laboratories, Harvard University, to LP RE: Believes that Robert B. Corey is fully qualified for membership in the National Academy of Sciences. However, as the competition for membership is so intense right now, Edsall is unsure as to whether Corey would actually be accepted. Since Edsall is still a member of the Chemistry Section, he does not know if the Biochemistry Section would back Corey. To them, Corey's activities might seem too remote from their own concerns. Will send this letter and LP's previous letter to Oncley, a member of the Biochemistry Section, to find out his opinion. Edsall is leaving for France for a position as a visiting professor. He will return at the end of January, after stopping in England to see Max Perutz and John Kendrew, as well as a former Harvard student named Howard Dintzis who is working on x-rays. [Letter from LP to Edsall December 1, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (E: Individual Correspondence. (Eastman - Eide)), #106.5]

12 December 1955
Dear Peter:
I have just read a review of the book "Mr. Guy's Hospital, 1726-1948," by Dr. H. C. Cameron, Green and Co., London, 1954, 30 shillings, I should like to have a copy of this book. Would you buy it for me, and mail it?
I received a note from Mott, in answer to my letter. His note is very brief. He says that there was no need for me to write to tell him that Kendrew and Perutz were doing excellent work.
While you are at it, would you also send me a copy of the book "Challenge and Answer," by Prof. Alexander Haddow, Bertrand Russel, Lord Beveridge, and Henry Usborne, London: B. T. Baxford, Ltd., 1955, 25 shillings.
I enclose my check for $136, corresponding to the approximately 48 pounds, my bill for books, binders, etc with you. I thank you very much for arranging to have these items sent to me.
By the way, would you check about a bit, to see whether there would be any difficulty in our keeping an account in a British bank, in order to make it convenient to pay for various items there. I suggest that you keep your account - perhaps I could advance a few hundred dollars to you, to be kept in an account in London, permitting you to send me items that I want, even after you have left.
Would you be good enough to hunt up the fourth Daily Telegraph crossword puzzle book, in the Penguin Series, and mail a copy to us? Mama had worked about fifteen of the puzzles in the book, and then last week when we went to Texas I put it in the pocket of my coat, and apparently dropped it in the plane, when I pulled my scarf out of the pocket. She had finished one of the puzzles except for one word, and she would like to know whether she has thought of the right word for this vacant place. Also, she is planning to work the rest of the puzzles, in the course of time - she prefers the Daily Telegraph puzzles to all of the others. Most of the others are too easy, or not precise enough in their definitions. Time and Tide is too hard - we haven't been able to get a single one of the puzzles completed. The Daily Telegraph is about right.
I think that I shall write to Howard Dintzis, offering him a job. I am not sure that I told you that Corey and I have decided to make a really vigorous attack on the problem of the structure of a globular protein. We have a couple of new ideas, which are, we hope, to permit the job to be done - at any rate, we think that a vigorous attack on the problem has about a fifty percent chance of succeeding in ten years.
Mama and I drove to Berkeley about ten days ago, and then drove back by the coast route. Then we suddenly decided to go to Texas. A symposium on quantum mechanics applied to molecules had been scheduled for three days, 7 to 9 December. We took the night plane, and came home on Saturday afternoon, four days later. Coulson was there, also Longuet-Biggins, and several other people from Europe, including Daudel, Mrs. Daudel, Pierman, and Hans Kuhn and his wife. I was rather disappointed to have the opinion verified that the molecular quantum mechanics people are not learning very much at the present time.
Crellin came home for Thanksgiving. We expect him home in a few days now, for the Christmas holidays.

- Letter from Professor Bruce A. Benson, Physics Dept., Amherst College, to LP RE: Benson's and LP's letters must have crossed in the mail. Glad that April 25-28 is satisfactory; has scheduled the lecture for April 26 at 8 PM. Requests that LP send the title of his lecture before the end of January, when the lecture schedule will be printed. Enjoyed LP's talk last year at Mt. Holyoke on "Sickle Cell Anemia." A topic like that would have interest for a very wide audience. [Letter from Benson to LP December 6, 1955, Letter from LP to Benson December 19, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.19]

- Letter from Donald E. Loeffler, San Francisco Chapter, Caltech Alumni Association, to LP RE: Dr. Clark said that LP would be in the San Francisco area in January. The Caltech Alumni Association invites LP to speak their next meeting. Suggests an evening dinner meeting for members and their wives or a weekday luncheon meeting for members working in San Francisco. A speech on his work leading to the Nobel Prize would be of great interest, but LP may choose another topic if he wishes. - Letter from Dr. Donald B. McIntyre, Geology Dept., Pomona College, to LP RE: Once worked with C. A. Beevers on a research project dealing with the crystal structure of the apatites. This introduction to the field of x-ray analysis convinced McIntyre of the importance of the stochastic hypothesis in science. Pleased to read LP's recent paper in the American Scientist and hear LP's recent address to the Channing Club. Interested to learn that LP had found the term "stochastic" in Smith's Inorganic Chemistry. Gives references for three papers, published in geological literature, which deal with this topic. Requests that LP let him know of any other articles on this topic. In the upper-left margin, LP has written "Ans'd." [Filed under LP Correspondence: (M: Correspondence, 1950-1955), #256.6]
- Letter from Dr. Garett Hardin, Associate Professor of Biology, University of California, Santa Barbara College, to LP RE: A date around May 20, 1956 would be acceptable for the lecture at UC Santa Barbara. Requests that LP let them know the exact date when his plans are certain. - Letter from Dr. Otto K. Behrens, Director, Biochemical Research Division, The Lilly Research Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company, to Dr. Robert B. Corey, Caltech, RE: After receiving Corey's letter, Behrens reviewed the status of the glucagon crystals suitable for x-ray photography with Dr. Ed Davisson. Davisson will prepare some macroscopic crystals and send them to Corey. Davisson will also write to Corey concerning the desirability of sending glucagon so Corey can prepare his own crystals. LP mentioned that Corey was planning to undertake similar work with insulin. Appreciate comments regarding Corey's plans in this respect. Dr. George F Wright
Department of Chemistry
University of Toronto
Toronto 5
Canada
Dear George:
Thanks very much for your letter of 3 December.
The newspapers carried a good bit about the passport testimony. As in the article in the News Edition also, the statements made in the papers were only in part correct. For one thing, the passport that I hold now is not valid -it was limited in time to the period required for the trip to Stockholm and around the world. However, I propose to apply, as soon as I can get another passport picture taken, for a regular passport, good for two years and for more than one trip, and I think that this application should be successful.
My wife joins me in sending best wishes to you and Mrs. Wright. We are hoping to have another visit with you sometime.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
- Letter from LP to Professor Harry G. Day, Department of Chemistry, Indiana University, RE: Thanks for his letter regarding the annual report of LP's Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Asks whether anything happened regarding the editorial about LP that appeared in the American Chemical Society's local section publication last spring because after receiving a copy of the editorial he was disturbed enough to take some action but some people from the section changed his mind. Also writes that Lynn Merritt has been working with them again and teaching for Don Yost's class since Don has been ill. - Letter from LP to Warren Chester, RE: No one in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering has had much experience with gallium. LP does not know anything about using gallium metal to plate on non-metallic surfaces. However, as gallium is a liquid at room temperature, it might be possible to treat a surface after the initial deposition of silver, with liquid gallium, which is then wiped off, leaving a thin film of the metal. - Letter from Professor H.G. Thode, Hamilton College, McMaster University, to LP RE: Has offered a position in physical chemistry and metallurgical science to Dr. Jack Halpern of the University of British Columbia. However, as a new head of the chemistry department has been appointed at British Columbia, Halpern's position may be improved, making it more difficult to attract him to Hamilton. Will let LP know the outcome. Dr. R.W. Atree of Chalk River is also interested in the Hamilton position. Dr. Sly is not interested in living outside the U.S. so it would be difficult to attract him. Might consider him later if Halpern declines. [Letters from LP to Thode June 13, 1955, December 28, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1936-1955), #410.20]

- Letter from LP to Felix Wunsch RE: Interested to see Wunsch's table, which showed the electronic configurations of the elements. Likely that Wunsch's table, as well as LP's chart, which served as a basis for the table, is not completely correct in representing the configuration of the atoms of the elements in their most stable states. Does not feel that a table showing these configurations is of enough importance to chemistry to justify its publication. Only a small difference in energy exists between the state corresponding to the configuration indicated in LP's chart and the most stable state; thus, does not think that the complication of the correct table is justified. This is the Section's third year and probably their most critical. Will not be able to cover LP's travel expenses, so hopes that LP can fit an Arizona stop into another trip to the east. Will gladly cover LP's lodging and meals during his visit. February and March are lovely in Tucson; perhaps LP and AHP would enjoy a vacation in Arizona during those months. 18 December, 1955
Dear Mamma, Daddy, and Crellin.
I have not yet begun to think about Christmas, though now your letter and present have come. Thank you very much, and for the wonderful packages. I have opened the packages and have the presents in my room. Linda is still in Edinburgh, and will have Christmas there or with the family I expect. I might go up but I rather doubt it.
Philip Ulrey is in England and comes to Cambridge fairly often. He is quite a nice boy and I am glad to see him. Perhaps I can get him to come to Christmas with me. We can drink and be merry. Perhaps I could make an egg nog on government whiskey. I have been driving my car some and am getting quite good at driving it. I drive a little fast perhaps, and English drivers are terrible.
Robley Williams is coming to Cambridge next year, and the reasons for going to Berkeley are rather less, but I expect I shall go anyway for a bit. It is too bad though, because I hear his stooges are not very good. I must get a fellowship though.
I gave finally some of those short trousers to Dorothy Hodgkin and the others to a school teacher friend for one of her poor pupils, a scruffy little boy in need of aid and assistance. Dorothy is beginning to work on insulin. They are well.
My work is a little held up at the moment with my inability to interpret a couple of difference Pattersons, but I hope they will come out. Rather a lot depends on it. This typewriter has [] () + = @.
Alex Rich is going home pretty soon. The government is getting worried. Don Caspar is here, and while he might get fired, it looks like he will be here for a little while longer. People are generally a little sad. Jim is working on poly adenilic acid. It looks like it is tetragonal with four fold screw. The boys are still wondering about collagen, but now are thinking a little on RNA. I want to finish my thesis and go to Italy. I need a little holiday sometime, though I suppose I do not really work hard enough to deserve on. I may go to Madrid since it appears I am giving a paper. How is the rotating anode? Perhaps we can take some pictures of the flagella. Thank for the presents and merry Christmas and happy new year.
Much love,
Peter

Professor Otto M. Smith
Research Foundation
Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College
Stillwater, Oklahoma
Dear Professor Smith:
Here are my answers to the five questions in your letter of 6 December.
1. I think that I can say that we pay professors who do outstanding work as teachers and leaders of young men and women, on a twelve-month service and pay basis, as much as professors who are doing research. All of our professors receive at least the minimum professorial salary here, without respect to the nature of their activities. Factors taken into consideration in granting salary increases include teaching, administrative work, research, general activity in the community, etc., with teaching bearing as important a part as any other factor.
2. All of our permanent staff members are on a twelve-month basis. We do not have summer school, but all of our staff members are paid through the summer, and cannot accept, in general, other jobs without asking for leave of absence from the Institute. None of our professors receives extra pay for carrying on research during the summer, either his own research or contract research.
3. I think that the opportunities for advancement of an outstandingly good teacher who does not do research probably are as good here as for an outstandingly good research man who does not do teaching. Most of the professors in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering do teaching and research.
4. We do not have a well-defined plan of designating a "distinguished professor." For four years we had a man (Professor John G. Kirkwood), in a special professorship, the Arthur Amos Noyes Professorship. Professor Kirkwood is an able teacher and an able research man. The professorship is not an endowed professorship - the designation was made by the Board of Trustees in honor of Professor Noyes, and since Professor Kirkwood's resignation the professorship has not been continued.
5. I think that I myself feel that the quality of staff members
[page 2]
lecturing in general chemistry and working in general chemistry laboratory is as high as of those working in the upper classes for chemistry majors. I give most of the lectures in general chemistry, and I have tried to make them as good as possible.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

- Letter from Dr. Robert B. Corey, Caltech, to Dr. Otto K. Behrens, Director, Biochemical Research Division, Eli Lilly Research Laboratories, RE: Will be interested to hear about Dr. Davisson's results in effort to produce glucagon crystals suitable for x-ray photography. Believes that the experienced personnel at Lilly Research Laboratories are more likely to be successful in growing the crystals than if Corey and his associates tried it at Caltech. Will later be desirable to grow crystals containing glucagon together with heavy ions; perhaps Caltech personnel might take on that job. Requests one or two grams of a well-characterized preparation of pure insulin for use in the growth of suitable crystals. This would be used in efforts to determine the complete structure of insulin. Dear Mamma,
Happy Birthday, merry christmas. I am so slow, this will not arrive in time, I am sorry. I
have done nothing about Christmas here. Linda will be in Scotland. I don't know that I can
remember how to make supreme sauce and hard sauce. If I get married, will you give a short
cooking course? If you want that amplifier, please advise and I shall get it. Just yes or no and a
little cheque.
Thank you for the Christmas present. I shall tell you what I decide to do with it.
Much love,
Peter

22 December 1955
Dear Anita and Linus:
Under separate cover I am sending you a copy of the Annual Report of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering for last year, and also a copy of the Report of the President of the California Institute of Technology. Perhaps you will be interested in some of the information about the work going on here.
I am feeling very pleased right now, because a couple of months ago I had a new idea about the way to determine the structure of a globular protein, such as hemoglobin or insulin. Many x-ray people have been working on this problem-for example, Perutz and Kendrew have devoted practically their full time to it for a decade or more, and Harker and half a dozen assistants in New York have been on the same job for about five years. The results obtained so far have been disappointing, because the x-ray methods are not sufficiently powerful enough to enable a straightforward attack on the problem to be made, and until recently I had not seen any way of doing the job, and had felt that we should not get involved in it. Then the new idea turned up, which consists in using certain inorganic complexes, containing 18 moderately heavy atoms, as the fiducial point in the crystals, in place of a single heavy atom (mercury or uranium), as has been tried before. In addition, we are planning to make use of the phenomenon of anomalous dispersion to decide between two alternative values of the phase of the scattered x-ray beam from each crystallographic plane. We are hoping to apply these ideas in a vigorous attack on the problem of the structure of globular proteins. I am afraid that it may take ten years to determine a single structure, but perhaps the job can be done in five years. I think that we shall try to determine the structure of insulin, in case that insulin can be made to form crystals with the inorganic complexes that we need to introduce to serve to mark the corner of the unit cell in the crystal.
Mama and I made a four-day trip to Texas a couple of weeks ago, in order to attend an international conference on molecular quantum mechanics. We found it interesting, but tiring enough for me to decide that I should not go to MGH this year for the annual meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board.
Crellin came home three days ago. He seems to be more interested in his work than before. He is taking organic chemistry this year, and has been allowed to start on a research problem. We are considering introducing organic chemistry in the sophomore year here at the Institute.
Please give my love to all of the children.
Much love from

Dear D. Hamilton:
The x-ray investigation of 6-mercaptopurine has now been carried out, by Dr. K. Hoogsteen, an able x-ray man who is working here this year. A copy of his report to me (by way of Professor Corey) is enclosed.
You will note that the unit cell is rather large, its shortest axis being 7.76 A. This means that the discovery of an approximate structure of the crystal is apt to be a rather hard job. For this reason and other reasons mentioned in the report, we have decided that it would not be wise to make a complete structure determination.
I think that Dr. Hoogsteen will write a short note, essentially the same as his report, for publication, probably in Acta Crystallographica.
We thank you for giving us the opportunity of carrying out this preliminary x-ray study of the substance. I am sorry that the crystal has turned out to be rather poorly suited to a complete analysis.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
