- Letter from Dr. P.P. Ewald, Head of Physics Dept., Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn to Members of the Acta Crystallographica Advisory Board and Members of the I.U. Cryst. Executive Committee RE: Expresses his disappointment with Dr. Smits' plan to wait to reorganize the editorship of Acta Crystallographica at the Executive Committee meeting. This delay would postpone reorganization for another year. Instead, has asked Dr. E.W. Hughes and Dr. H. Lipson to join Board of Editors; both have consented. Expresses his belief that Executive Committee will accept these appointments at the upcoming meeting. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Organizational Correspondence (Ac-Ad)), #7.6]
- Letter from LP to Dr. John Kendrew, Cambridge, RE: Wrote to Howard Dintzis and offered him a job at Caltech. Dintzis had received a strong recommendation from Edsall. LP and Corey have recently begun work on the determination of the structure of a crystalline globular protein. Peter Pauling came home during the summer. He seems deeply interested in his work with Kendrew. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (K: Individual Correspondence. (Kamb - Kendrew)), #197.16]
- Letter from LP to Professor G.A. Jeffrey, Sarah Mellon Scaife Radiation Laboratory, University of Pittsburgh, RE: Interested to read Jeffrey's manuscript on the structures of A1N and BeO. Wonders if calculations of the Madelung constant have been made for wurtzite, with variation of the axial ratio. Suggests calculating how the Madelung constant changes when the parameter is kept at such a value as to make all four ligands equidistant. - Letter from Leonora Bilger to LP RE: Congratulates LP on Nobel Prize. Wondering when he will be in Honolulu again. Encloses a clipping from a Honolulu record. 21 December 1955
Dear Mamma,
Happy Birthday, merry christmas. I am so slow, this will not arrive in time, I am sorry. I
have done nothing about Christmas here. Linda will be in Scotland. I don't know that I can
remember how to make supreme sauce and hard sauce. If I get married, will you give a short
cooking course? If you want that amplifier, please advise and I shall get it. Just yes or no and a
little cheque.
Thank you for the Christmas present. I shall tell you what I decide to do with it.
Much love,
Peter
- Note from Dr. P.P. Ewald, Head of Physics Dept., Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn to LP RE: Thanks LP for his assistance in solving the Acta Crystallographica troubles. Pleased to be able to present a definite plan of action at the Executive Committee meeting. Sends Christmas greetings to LP and AHP.
