Behrens, Director, Biochemical Research Division, The Lilly Research Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company, RE: Requests some crystals of glucagon, preferably in contact with a small quantity of the mother liquor, as well as a portion of the mother liquor in a separate container for use in the manipulation of the crystals. Would like to try to obtain good x-ray diffraction patterns from the crystals. Cannot guarantee any results in advance, but hopes Behrens will still be willing to risk the material. In a postscript, requests a reprint of Behrens' article published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry on the purification and crystallization of glucagon. Wonders if Edsall would be willing to assume the responsibility of obtaining signatures. Does not believe that the physical chemists or the organic chemists will support Corey. Believes the best way for him to be elected would be through a joint nomination. - Letter from LP [Signed by MS] to James A. Anderson RE: Came across an article on hexaphenyldigermane in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, which reminded him of germanium organics. Anderson had requested information on germanium organics and LP suggests that he start with that article. Remarks that this subject is not a good one for experimental work by a beginner. Kirkwood, Sterling Chemistry Laboratory, Yale University, RE: Thanks Kirkwood for sending along the letter from Dr. Carey which was mistakenly sent to Kirkwood. - Letter from LP to Dr. M.S. Sundaram, Embassy of India, RE: Thanks Sundaram for the invitation to have lunch with him on October 11. Unfortunately, Sundaram's letter did not reach Pasadena until LP had left. Moreover, when LP arrived Washington, he became ill with a cold, and had to stay in bed for a while. Has talked again with Dr. Richard Lippman about the matter of he and Dr. Tom Perry carrying on teaching and research in medicine in India. Lippman hoped to talk with Sundaram again about the possibility. LP feels that appointments in India for Lippman and Perry, which need not carry high salaries, should be seriously considered. Belser, George Institute of Technology, Engineering Experiment Station, RE: Thanks Belser for the report on the structure and aging of thin bimetal films and for the sample of aluminum alloy showing the purple-gold aluminum compound formed by solid state diffusion. Interested to hear about the technique of forming alloys by the evaporation or sputtering of one element onto another. Passing Belser's report on to Bergman so he can try the method. Dear Professor Archibald:
Thank you for your letter and for the copy of LUBRICATION ENGINEERING containing your article on Professor Sommerfeld.
It looks very good to me. Also, I shall be glad to see a copy of Ernst Sommerfeld's account of his father. I knew Ernst thirty years ago, and I saw him two years ago. I also saw Frau Sommerfeld, who died recently. One of the two (I don't remember which one) said that when Professor Sommerfeld was brought home after the traffic accident he said "Now I shan't be able to finish my book" - the last volume of the series of texts on theoretical physics that he was writing.
It was a great privilege for me to have been able to work with Sommerfeld. He was an extraordinarily able teacher, and I got a great deal out of his lectures.
