Dear Dave:
With respect to your student Frank C. Wilson, I think that it would be fine if he could have a post-doctoral fellowship here. In general, it seems to me better for him to have one of the national fellowships than a Noyes Fellowship, and I suggest that he apply for one, but he might also apply here for a Noyes Fellowship or for a job with Corey or Bergman. I am sending an application form for the Noyes Fellowship, which you may turn over to him.
Also, let me answer your letter about complexes of molybdenum and tungsten. Nothing more has been published about Waugh's work. I have a good number of his preparations. Among them are the following:
15(NH4)2O • 2P2O5 • 6V2O3 • 44WO3 • 106 H2O ?
NaK2(MoO4)3 • l4 H20
guinidine-11-tungsto-cobaltate
barium 11-tungstate-chromate, Ba5(Cr2W22O24) • 43 H2O
Ba5(Mn2W22O74) • 17 H2O
(NH4)7PO4W9O40 • 20 H2O
(NH4)8H2Mn2W22O74 • 48 H2O
(NH4)2CeMo12O42 • 8 H2O
K3AlMo8O21 • 10 H2O
(NH4)8H2Cr2W22O74 • 42OH2O
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
P.S. Waugh is now at Pacific Coast Borax Company, in Los Angeles. LP
